  • United States Navy Search and Rescue Medical Technicians (SMT’s) are Hospital Corpsman trained up to be aircrewmen on top of their medical training. SAR Corpsman are a part of the Navy’s HM/ATF program, just like their SARC and DMT counterparts are. They are trained up to render medical care in search and rescue operations, and have a lengthy and challenging pipeline. This video discusses their training pipeline, what they do, and who they are.

    As a prior candidate at NACCS (2112) I cannot stress enough how important the swimming portion is. "Hell Week" at Naccs is primarily IT exercising followed by WSS (Water Survival School) for 5 days straight, ending on Friday with the 1 Mile Swim. 36 laps in a flight suit sounds easy enough, but your entire class does it at the same time. 30 ish people in 1/3rd of a pool, for 70 minutes. If you get the orders to go SMT from HM A School, make sure you fully understand the 4 survival strokes, as well as having an adept form of conditioning for the other water exercises, especially if you are not water confident. It's an easy school, just stay on top of your uniform regs and demeanor around the DAI (Instructors) and really show confidence and determination during class.
    1st week - Indoc, get your shirts and Nalgene labeled, learn the creed. Also get an Up-chit from NAMI.
    2nd week - Hell week, 4 basic strokes, face down float in increasing gear, tower jump etc, 1 mile swim, a 5 mile run, and a lot of crucial information/exercises for any mishaps at sea.
    3rd week. Disney week, learn about hypoxia and also maybe the Helo dunker, just depends on time. Also learn parachuting and how the SAR portion works if you're the one being rescued.
    4th week - Grad week, 5 mile run, some other light PT, get cool with the instructors, design your class patch, get your aircrew bag with your nomex, leather jacket, new "flight boots" and your gloves etc. Grad week is also where you do your ceremony. Then you pack up and go whereever next. For me it was across base to A-School. For an HM, you'll prob go back to your original duty station until SERE slots you in. It can take around 4-30 days depending.
    To all future candidates, be loud, be proud, be perfect.
    Hooyah Aircrew, and good luck.

    What is the difference between a Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer and a Navy Rescue Swimmer.
    In terms of training and capabilities.

    • @optrdocksidebars7106
      @optrdocksidebars7106 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      In simplest terms, the Coast Guard AST will have vastly more rescue experience and exposure than the overwhelming majority of Navy Rescue Swimmers.
      The reality of being an Aviation Rescue Swimmer in the Navy is you will train for a role that in all likelihood, you will never actually perform, except for in extremely rare circumstances. Between the fact if you’re stateside the Coast Guard will always get the call before you do, and advances in Naval Aviation safety, means the odds of a pilot punching out of his jet are slim at best. Again that’s not to say it can’t happen, but odds are slim to you ever seeing that.
      The only real chance of you getting a rescue is if you end up in a Station SAR where there are no Coast Guard assets and the Navy is really the only show in town. Places like Fallon Nevada or Whidbey Island Washington or China Lake. Or you just happen to be the lucky guy who gets the call that a guy fell overboard or a pilot punched out.
      That’s the reason why the job is being rebranded as a “Helicopter Crew Chief/Aerial Gunner” billet in a recruiting sense, because they realize just saying you’ll only be a Rescue Swimmer is misleading to what the job actually entails. You will spend more time acting as a Crew Chief or gunner than you will actually acting in a swimmer capacity.
      Now that’s not to say the job is bad, you’ll get to fly around in helicopters, shoot guns, and jump from them, but if you’re thinking you’ll only ever be a rescue swimmer, you should temper your expectations. That’s part of the reason why there’s a lot of job dissatisfaction within the AWS/AWR community and subsequently low retention numbers for first tour guys. A lot of people sign up thinking they’re going to be just a rescue swimmer, which isn’t reality.

    • @dallasyap3064
      @dallasyap3064 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      SAR Medical Technicians (SMTs) aka SAR Corpsmen deal with more on the medical aspect, like providing medical treatment to recovered personnel who are wounded and requires medical attention. Rescue Swimmers (AIRR) deal with more on the rescue aspect in the ocean meaning they are the ones going to be jumping into the huge tidal wave ocean to retrieve downed personnel and get them on the helicopter safely, just like the Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers, where if they require medical attention then SMTs would be the ones providing the care. SMTs however are also capable of conducting combat search and rescue (CSAR), something like the PJs do.

      1 thing I know about PJs is that apart from conducting CSAR missions whether conventional or unconventional behind enemy lines (like SOFs missions went wrong and need rescue), they are also highly trained in specialized technical rescues like mountain rescue, high-angle slope rescue, crevasse rescue, cold-weather rescue (rock climbing, ice climbing etc) confined space rescue, urban rescue, extrications of vehicles and aircrafts. They're also trained to conduct rescue in water environments like ocean air to sea rescue (like the ones often done by Coast Guard rescue swimmers), underwater search & rescue, swift water rescue etc. They are also highly trained in emergency medicine. A Navy "HM-ATF" "SMT/Search & Rescue Medical Technician" is very similar to a Navy "AIIR" 'Air Rescue Swimmer'. Why don't they combine the career fields? Can you make a video on their differences perhaps? Because I am having a hard time figuring it out. SMT's seem to swim as well. And both career fields are Aircrewmen. I believe the only difference is 'SMT's' can become Paramedics and 'Rescue Swimmers' do not. A video on the "AIIR" rating would be wonderful! Thank you!

      @kayadams9746 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Special forces medics like green berets, navy sarcs, army rangers are also good, but they are pretty tough to get into, and you would use weapons for killing people, not for your or your patients protection.

    • @optrdocksidebars7106
      @optrdocksidebars7106 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      SMTs aren’t Rescue Swimmers. This video is a bit misleading with what footage you’re being shown (which no fault to these guys because SMT footage is pretty hard to come by with it being such a small community), but SMTs are not trained to rescue people from the water. That’s the job of their rescue swimmer. Once the swimmer has brought the patient inside the cabin of the helicopter, then the SMT will start treating them. For overland situations, SMTs will often be the first rescuer deployed to render aid to patients, but they do not act in a water capacity.

There is a 1 is called Hospital Corpsman - Advanced Technical Field (HM-ATF), which has 3 different corpsman ratings, Special Amphibious Reconnaissance Corpsmen (SARCs), Search & Rescue Medical Technicians (SAR Med Techs or SMTs) and Dive Medical Technicians (DMTs).
