Many people call it, "Waking the spine up". If you do that to a hardcover book, the life of the book will last long enough, to pass on to your children and grandchildren; quite possibly a couple centuries or more.
With a hardcover book the process is a little different. You start the same as you did by placing the book on its spine, but, you open it about two-fourths (i.e. near the middle, doesn't have to be exact) the way into the book until you feel it straining to open; only pushing gently on it to start waking it up, but not all the way to the surface you're using, nor much further than what it is wanting to, then you close the book. Next, you repeat the process, but at one-fourth (i.e. near the front) the way into the book. And finally at three-fourths (i.e. near the back) the way into the book. Keep repeating this process starting near the center each time until you can push the covers to the surface without much effort (i.e. it's okay for the covers to want to hold a little midair off the surface when not pressing down on them, don't feel like you need to get it to lay flat before starting the next stage of the procedure, they will come do so with time of use). Last, but certainly not least, you do as you did with the paperback you demonstrated with, but only going one page at a time; pressing down just enough that it could be considered as a little more weight than your hand itself laying there on the page. Mostly, you want the weight of the pages of the book to do most of the work for you. Repeat this last stage of the process two more times and your done (i.e. doing it a total of three times). Next, read your book, unless of course you would like to take some extra steps that I will mention later.
Takes longer to do with a hardcover book but well worth the effort put forth. Also, if you're paying attention to what you are doing rather than trying to read, you don't have to worry about spoiling any the book to yourself. And, you can get some acid free tape to put on the inside seems of the covers. You just lay the book flat on its spine as you would when waking the spine up (i.e. but after you have done so). Then you open one of the covers up so it lays flat on the surface and put the strip of tape running down the seem of the inside of the spine to help prevent splitting at the seems. After this, you can get Bodart book cover acrylic (i.e. or whatever is available to you in your area) to wrap around the dust jacket or the cover (i.e. and also depending on whether hardcover or paperback the product will be different, because for a paperback it's more of stick-on, but it can come off easily if need be).
With all that I have mentioned, you can make a book last for a very long time, if you take good care of it; especially hardcovers. You're welcome and happy reading.

For me, it is about the same as you, anywhere from double to triple the cost of a paperback. Now, don't get me wrong, if nothing but a paperback printing is available with no other option that is better then the paperback that is what I will get. I'm not like some Hardcover Onlyist, where I believe that only hardcover books should exist, but if it is something that a person would like to keep for a long time if they're willing to take care of it then the hardcover (i.e. or better) is the way to go.
Now, why exactly did I say, "or better"? That would be for the fact that there are books that are made with real leathers. For example, calfskin, lambskin, or goatskin. These are true lay-flat books, and they usually come in one peace covers, and also you are helping to make sure that none of an animal that has been used for other purposes such as food has not gone to waste. Usually books that use these kinds of covers don't need the attention to care that other books with lesser covers need for a first reading so you don't damage the spine. You just plop them on the table and read it, or wherever you are. Books of this nature usually run no less than about $50-$100 for calfskin leather, $90-$150 for lambskin leather, and upwards to $200-$300 or more for goatskin leather; and that is if you are only paying for the price of materials and to have it printed and crafted with labor time, otherwise you could be looking at something upwards to triple them prices or possibly upwards to a $1,000 or more. Many of these books last truly for centuries if they're well taken care of, and most of the time you'll see, for example, something like Bibles that are crafted and printed with these covers because they want them to last for a very long time.
So the next time you see a hardcover book, don't escalate it as if they're too expensive, because there are books that are far more expensive; and to be thankful that you can at least get something if you wanted to and possibly afford that you could pass on to your grandchildren or possibly further if it was and still is beyond that point well taken care of. True leather cover books really put things into perspective for people, and allow them to have a better respect for hardcovers, and no longer complain about the price of them. The rich don't get hardcover books if they can get it in any other format that's better, it's the middleclass that gets hardcover books on a regular basis. To someone that doesn't have a lot of money to spend, sure, a hardcover can seem like a rich man's book, but they're not. Leather books are usually a one-time or two-time at most purchase for some people, because they wouldn't have the money to spend on them all the time, but they do want a one-off peace in their library that's a little more up there in price; and the most readily available in these formats are usually Bibles, and that's what people usually get for that one-off peace, and it's best to get them from honest people who put a price on them that only charge for the material, labor, and printing: nothing more, besides maybe shipping and tax.
(Note: I only used the Bible as an example because they are the most readily available in those formats, and you would be able to explore and get a feel for the price ranges of books that are printed in those formats. Be thankful for hardcovers lol.)

This really helps with hard cover books. When I was young and my family got a new set of Worldbook encyclopedias or annual supplements, it was my joy and pride to crease the books like this! And though I didn't read any of the material while I creased them, I marveled momentarily at the beautiful pictures, and I got an idea of what subjects were in this book. And yes, I did this to every hardback book we came into.
Oh, and I was a child in the 1970's,so I've been doing this a very long time.
When you reached the center of the book the spine was fully curved and I thought you'd cracked it. But you hadn't!
I already knew about this technique and when I tried it on a paperback the spine kind of cracked within the first 100 pages itself. :(

Yep every single time I've tried this they have. Depends entirely on how the book was bound. Crappy paperbacks will always crack. I've wondered if it's better to just heat the glue a little and then try and flex the book when it's less stiff

Do it slower. If done well, the spine shouldn't crack (small to medium books spines shouldn't even - or just barely) lift from the table when doing this). Not helpful for incredibly large books, they will crack if you want to read comfortably. And that said, a cracked book looks like a book that has been enjoyed :)

Just done this for the first time. None of my future books will get cracked spines. 😂 The ones I've bought brand new haven't got too badly cracked but I've got a handful of second hand ones that have got very bad cracking.

There was a time high end bookstores and librarians did this but over the years the book would start falling apart that's why you find many vintage books with pages falling out !! I collect books and used to be a friend of a book binder he told me that books that have had this done to them is his main income just doing restoration on books that have had this done to them !! Because people do this and think its the right thing to do but in years to come the book just starts falling apart. As a collector I know exactly which books have had this done to them and which havnt I have books with pages falling out and they are only editions from the 30s 40s,50s,60s, 70s, etc and the pages are loose and the book is no longer solid yet I have a books from 1800, 2903, 1906, 1907 1914, my 1800 edition is over 200 years old and it is still in perfect condition due to not having this done to it. Doing this also brings down the value book just because its had this done to it . I have a signed first edition of plagues dogs, the last owner told me it had this done to it by a high end bookstore back in 1977 when it was published, and because that was done to it, now years later there are sections of pages that have come away I had it looked at by a book binder and the first thing they said was its had this done to it. He said when people do this they are destroying its binding and support making the glue come apart and over they years of been read it gets worse and worse until the pages just give up and fall out he said this is the worst thing anyone can do to a book as its like someone putting you on a medieval rack and pulling on your limbs over and over tighter and tighter and eventually your limbs will just give up and they will come away frim your body first they will pop out of the shoulder and hip sockets followed by tearing of your tendons and muscles untill they just come off, this is exactly what your doing to a book when doing this !!

dang wish id have found this a few days earlier just bought a book and tried so hard not to crack the spine but still unfortunately it has two cracks in it around the middle, but this is super helpful definitely will start using it

I have 1 question. Why some books open all the way to the sides, even without this technique. You can just put them flat on the bed, no need of holding it with your hands.. Like our school textbooks I remember, then theres a 1000 page book i have hitchikers guide to the galaxy. While so many paperbacks like the six of crows, we need to hold them and read?

It is really cheap on Amazon Prime and Im sure you could find it on other websites but I have had zero luck finding them in stores.
Nope, every single time I've tried this method the spine cracks around the middle and starts to bend, even when doing it page by page and slowly. What annoys me is some series have books that the spine doesn't bend at all and the pages flow well and are looser, then others are super stiff and bend the instant you try to read them.
