i tried it and broke the spine of a 1000 pages book-
I have done this method on many 1000+ page books and it has worked flawlessly. Is it possible that your book was old and/or the glue dried out? If not, then perhaps that book just decided to not cooperate.
Probably you just grab too much pages or book was old or something I do this and it works perfectly-
