Just saw one of these fly over the house. There's an airport about 4 miles away. Last Wednesday I saw a Dehavilland Beaver fly over head...

I'm not a pilot but I have a curiosity question at maximum speed how much drag do floats slow a plane down versus just the wheels thank you in advance
I don't know
It’s a good question. In water conditions as you see here, once you get up on step, the 172 will usually come unstuck and start flying at about 50 mph, same as wheels. Takeoff distance is longer, but not too bad. In glassy conditions, much longer. For those takeoffs you have to unstick one float before the other. Hope that answer helps. I have recent experience, btw.
If your question is how much did the floats slow you down while you’re flying, the answer is quite a bit. But when you’re around a lot of water it’s great having the option of floats. Plus it’s a load of fun!
