Hazel Grey Yeah, children pick up their parents attitudes. I can understand why Christina was refusing to do what Joan told her to do. I liked Joan Crawford as a star. Seen all her films. However, she wasn't the best mom. Sad, really!
Seriously, everyone here is saying Christina was a little brat, but what about the big brat acting like she's hot shit because she beat a child in a swimming race and then throwing an over the top tantrum when her child sasses her? This isn't a woman disciplining her child in a way that is proportionate to the child's misdeed, this is a mentally unstable woman losing her shit because her ego is so damn fragile. People today either beat the shit out of their child for just blinking funny while others wouldn't smack their child even if it held up a liqour store and was trafficking human organs and cocaine. There's a happy medium. Joan's reaction is completely out of proportion with Christina's sassmouth, and she was actually being a complete brat to her child.... where do you think the child got it from? How can you expect your child to model behaviours that you don't yourself do? Poor sportsmanship and passive aggressive gloating are not behaviours you want your son or daughter to be modelling.

Yeah, the thing is with discipline, you have to make your reaction proportionate to what the child has done. Joan went so EXTRA and was being a pretty bad winner to her daughter. It's like oh you beat a child in a swimming race, that's such a thing to act like your shit don't stink over. If you respond this way every time your child sasses you or has a bit of attitude, you'll end up tired and hoarse voiced, and your child will be a neurotic mess.
It would be worse if Tina EVER won.... Joan would have gotten even with her one way or another out of jealousy, like maybe paid a woodsman to take her in the forest and cut her heart out or something.
I know I should be horrified by the child abuse, but I'm just mesmerised by the fact that her bath robe has shoulder pads and looks fierce as hell. You look at some of 'Joan's' looks in this film and you realise why it's a favourite amongst drag queens.
Nothing Crawford did in this scene was child abuse. In some aspects, given how things were done back then, that little girl was lucky she did not get her face slapped so hard she fell back into the pool. Children were not allowed to speak as she did, or even throw shade as she did. Respecting parents then, unlike today, was not an option.
Gregory Smith, I greatly believe you in regards to abuse can happen to any child, rich or poor. But regarding Joan's behavior I would note a few things. Her daughter wrote the book because Joan did not leave her anything. During that time, that really is how people talked. Whooping were not only common but expected though Joan went way too far. Joan had her own mental health issues. In the movie, Christina did things that would have, during that time, get a kid spanking, a hard one. That rolling eyes, and talking back crap kids do these days, did not work back then. No matter how hard a parent tries, no matter their love or inability to show it, all kids, ALL kids have to deal with some issues in the adult years that they suffered as a child. What would be considered abuse now, was acceptable then. In judging Crawford people tend to forego the era of her times.
Gregory Smith, I hear what you are saying and in some aspects I agree with you but overall I stand by my position. Joan Crawford was faced with hellish odds. I suspect she had some mental issues. She was a woman who seek power in a country molded to accommodate only white men. She wanted children when societal rules were against her. The guts it had to take to sit at the table of Pepsi board of directors I believe came from all her life experiences. In part I believe Joan raised her kids based on the influences of how she was raised. Forcing Christina to give away most of her gifts, I don't agree with it but I understand it. I think she meant well. I really do. Christina got what she wanted. Revenge. For evermore the world will judge Joan as harsh as Christina's hate for her mother. But I won't.
Joan Crawford had a very rough childhood along time ago When she adopted the kids she had no idea how to raise She focused on herself instead of her children that she was supposed to look after but she didn’t She made her choice to be abusive to them like her parents were
Joan Crawford remembers that when Christina was very young, mother and daughter were "racing" through the water of the 65-foot swimming pool of the Brentwood estate. "I let her win eight times," the actress says, "and then on the ninth time I struck out just a little bit and I won. She took a look at me and she swam back over to the steps and climbed out of the pool. She stood there and said, 'I'll never play with you as long as I live, never.' I said, 'Christina, look, my body is longer than yours. I could have won all the time. I'm bigger than you are. I'm faster than you are. I can win all the time. Now let's get back in the pool and play.' I picked her up to throw her into the pool and jumped in with her and made her swim." - From "The Revolt of Joan Crawford's Daughter," Redbook 1960
86am that's what happened--and notice how Christina twists it around in the book--she probably did it for every 'fact' in the book. She had a axe to grind with Joan.
As witness to abuse I would say I recognize her gesture, the flow of beat and lock up in a small room is exactly the same. A research should be done about this.
A real parent would have said "You're still little! Keep trying! You will get faster and stronger if you keep practicing and as you grow you will be able to swim faster!" Joan was almost gloating over winning 😠😞
Having an innocent competition and teaching your daughter that you may not succeed in everything in life is okay, but the thing that stuck out for me in this clip was how Joan completely dismissed her daughter as she was walking out of the pool. To Joan, this was a *real* competition and not just silly Mother/daughter moments.
Had Christina actually won the "race" against Mommie Dearest, she probably would have been punished (beaten) for upstaging her mother. If you know what's good for you in such a "family," you gracefully lose to preserve your hide...and maybe even your life.

"I will always beat you." But Christina won at the end in real life. She got Joan's moolah even when Joan tries to deny them it after death. XD So much for beating.
@Jason Montague ??? Um... I'm talking about real life. I'm not talking about the movie. It was never put in the movie at all. If you read up on what happened with that, you would know.
The people that defend Joan Crawford should remember Christina's response: "she wasn't your mother." It's why I love the portrayal of the Queen in The Crown, and wonder of King Charles really meant it when he said he missed his mommy. Queen Elizabeth may have been a wonderful monarch, but was she a good mother? I don't know. She did love her dogs and horses, kinda like Joan Crawford. I wonder what's the British version of "no wire hangers?" "No marrying Camilla!" lol
"Don't you EVER use that tone of voice with you, missy! Who do you think you're talking to? I'll tell you what you're gonna do. You're gonna March yourself upstairs to your room and you will stay there until I tell you to come out!"
I know Christina Turned the story around because she wanted to win all 9 times and losing on the 9th time but I guess I don't blame her for turning the story around because The mother actually abused her by picking her up and throwing her into the pool and made her swim alot more. That's abuse.
Carrie White vs. her mother VS Christina vs. Joan Crawford! Now I'd pay money to see that. In case anybody's wondering I meant Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie for Carrie vs. Her mother.
Okay I have always been iffy about this scene. Yes, Joan Crawford was a very abusive woman. But personally, I kinda see this as normal parenting. My mother used to have my TV unplugged, took away my video games and Pokemon cards when I would have an an attitude with her. Aside from being a sore winner at swimming, THIS WAS NOTHING!
I don’t think the punishment is entirely the point of the scene. Joan’s ego went so far that she had to brag about how much better at swimming she is than a child. What person brags about being better than a child? And her anger seemed to come more from the prospect that she wouldn’t be able to upstage her own child rather than the attitude Christina gave.
I think Joan genuinely wanted to teach her kid that life isn't fair. I'm not a child abuse apologist - I believe Christina. I think in this scene, Joan's unreasonable response to Christina's remonstration, "Then I'm not gonna play with you anymore.." is where the actual abuse starts. However, the _intention_ behind Mommy winning the swimming race, was not sinister, for me.
Christina got revenge, all right. The novel told of Joan's life as a mother pretty much made things even. And Faye's portrayal of Joan made her even more despicable.
Did anyone else watch "Mommie Dearest" as a kid and sort of want to make sure she was happy so she wouldn't lose her temper and blow up, as if you were there too as a kid, walking on eggshells?
For the longest time, my mom thought this movie was made in the 30's, and that the little girl who played Christina was a young Betty White 😂 Bless her heart. To be honest, I can see why she thought that was Betty White, cause the little girl even has Betty White's hairstyle in other scenes.

@Jason Montague Christina and Christopher sued the estate and the court settled it by awarding them $55k.
It would have been hard for Faye to play this part of the mother. She is stunning. I couldn’t do it!
I remember seeing this when it first came out, and chills ran down my spine started at the :55 second mark. It reminded me 100% of how my Mom was.
Actually, that teaches kids not to answer back to their parents. Lol
“You lost again! 😏
My favorite part of this scene, without a shadow of a doubt, was that FABULOUS robe with those SHOULDER PADS! 😍😍😍🔥. And with that swim cap! Wow.
At 0:22, the lady leaving the pool.. is that Faye Dunaway?? I swear it looks like maybe a stand in was used for the swimming..maybe I'm wrong
I used to race my daughter at swimming when she was about 8, but she was a swimming club swimmer and she would beat me by miles lol.
Its funny when Christina throws a fit and gets in trouble 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
NARCISSISTIC MOTHERS ARE ALL LIKE THAT
Defiant and behavioral problems from the child.
im bigger and im stronger and i will ALWAYS win
It would've been "good parenting" if she was more of a mother, than an abuser
The people that defend Joan Crawford should remember Christina's response: "she wasn't your mother." It's why I love the portrayal of the Queen in The Crown, and wonder of King Charles really meant it when he said he missed his mommy. Queen Elizabeth may have been a wonderful monarch, but was she a good mother? I don't know. She did love her dogs and horses, kinda like Joan Crawford. I wonder what's the British version of "no wire hangers?" "No marrying Camilla!" lol
If you really put some thought into this scene, Joan was instigating the whole thing.
So this is why my mom doesn't want to be called Mommie dearest lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Even her robe has the shoulder pads.
1:31
the way she said that though
No wonder Tina had lip. When you see the rest of the abuse the kids went through in this movie you'll get it.
It feels like Christina should of been the Protagonist, and Joan to be the Antagonist
'Haaaah, you LOST AGAIN!' 😂🔥☈
"It's not fair. You're bigger than I am. It's not fair to win twice."
0:58 "EVER!"
She even managed to treat leisure activities like serious competitions come on now, childish as hell
Carrie White vs. her mother VS Christina vs. Joan Crawford! Now I'd pay money to see that.
In case anybody's wondering I meant Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie for Carrie vs. Her mother.
hold up let me put this on world stasr
World stasr? .....I don't get it. What is that?
Random person: "A spelling error."
No jk. :)
+Stefan Poirier go on TH-cam and look up world star
Uhhhh well..............ok. :)
+Robert Collins What's TH-cam btw? No jk :P
My mom used to knock over my shelfs because they weren't organized enough and yank me out of bed at 5am if I forgot to wash the dishes
Parent of the year😤
She cheated racing Christina here, had a major headstart. Sad that she would even compete with a child like that.
it was christina that had the headstart
Actually Tina had the head start
I think Joan genuinely wanted to teach her kid that life isn't fair. I'm not a child abuse apologist - I believe Christina. I think in this scene, Joan's unreasonable response to Christina's remonstration, "Then I'm not gonna play with you anymore.." is where the actual abuse starts. However, the _intention_ behind Mommy winning the swimming race, was not sinister, for me.
You don't teach your children that life isn't fair by bullying and being unfair to them. But nice try at attempting to analyze this.
Years later, Christina should have gotten her revenge by beating Joan in her old age. It would serve her right.
Your mom is not very smart
@@FerrariCarr nah, she’s not an idiot like your mom
1:34: “AND TO APOLOGIZE!!!”
Yes, even though thats what was indeed said but in a way does it sound like shes yelling
“AND TILL YOUR FATHER DIES” ??
Who was her father
Guys she didn't even lock the closet door....
Anyone interested in the making of the movie should read the new book "With Love, Mommie Dearest: The Making of An Unintentional Camp Classic"!
She got on that football player robe
LOVE THERE ACTING 10/10
