The modding community really does make this game what it should be, and it's a real shame that Taleworlds still hasn't picked up on some the better mods and made their features baseline.
My first 3 hours of the game for me consisted of me being a bandit prisoner and starving off and on and it was still a lot of fun. Unintentionally learned a great way to level combat skills and medicine 😂 just get your ass beat alot

I played the original Mount & blade, if memory serves, before Steam. It was glorious. Played it on and off for many years, modded it to hell and back. Brytenwalda was my favorite. But I've been holding off on buying this new thing . . . there have been quite a few "new things" in the interim if I'm not mistaken, and some of them didn't sound so good. But this review tells me what I need to know: this is, if not a Taleworld's Magnum Opus, at least a Penultimus Opus . . . or some such . . . Thanks! You should check out Terra Invicta bro! I strongly agree with your assessment of diplomacy, especially in regards to truces and tribute. I've had campaigns ruined by every kingdom declaring war on me and demanding tribute, and even if I fight them to the point where I don't pay them anything they immediately redeclare war with their newly freed nobility and demand ridiculous level of tribute. It also wouldn't be so bad if the tribute only applied to the king, but it applies to my vassals as well, so the main way of getting out of the tribute death spiral, making a large army via vassals so they leave you alone, is impossible as the vassals are broke and can't afford armies. You can't even donate money to you vassals to help dig them out of the hole tribute put them in, and like any form of peace outside tribute, or just the presence of truces would eliminate all these issues.

Ok quick story I was playing the first Mount and Blade WarBand. Its My first ever Playthrough , I had this engineer companion First guy I ever picked up . Had him till late game he was awesome helped me conquer the world with how fast we could build the siege weapons . After I became king I named him His own Noble and freed him from my party to pay him homage. HE THEN WENT ON TO LEAD A REBELLION AGAINST ME with all my Great houses. I lost the war and my capitol . maybe thats why I have trust issues
I've now owned Bannerlord for a month. TH-cam Alg decided to remind me what it was that compelled me to get back into the game: it was this video! 😀 Just wanted to say: this is an amazingly good video. You've done a great service to the TW communities and to them too.
To claim that Bannerlord is "modder friendly" is a slap in the face to the modding community. There has been almost NO support for modding from the devs and EVERY patch they do (and they patch A LOT) destroys 80% of all mods. so MANY mods are dead because the modders could not update them every 2 weeks because another stupid update dropped. So many modders left for that exact reason, their entire work being destroyed by another pointless update that adds almost nothing. The only reason the game still has mods is because the vanilla is bad and boring and because some modders are just stubborn or have developed superior tools to what the devs have. Its mainly people from mount and blade 1 who just are used to modding and love the genre. If bannerlord was their first game, no one would mod it, because of have f**** up it is to do so. The community has to create EVERYTHING themselves, the modding tools, the unpackers, the mod managers, the mods, there is ZERO support from the devs, there isnt even a modding menu in the freaking game, so wtf are you talking about being modding friendly??? Bannerlord is one the most toxic games when it comes to modding, the devs hate modders.
This is NOT a sandbox game. You can not create, alter or destroy elements of the game (aside from lives and factions), or creatively manipulate other than the specific way it was meant to be played.
With the advancements in AI over the last 5 years, I am really excited for Mount and Blade 3. Bannerlord was originally advertised as a deep simulation of lords all with their own motives vying for power that would react to each other and the player's actions in varying ways depending on their personality. In reality, every single lord may as well be the same, they barely even react to anything, obviously this is excusable since the technology just wasn't there, but they really shouldn't have overpromised. But Mount and Blade 3 will have access to all the latest advancements in technology, everything from AI generated dialogue based on the context of your game and your actions, to novel strategies depending on all the variables of each battle, and AI that can actually participate in diplomacy making strategic marriages and making political decisions to gain more influence by setting themselves goals to get certain titles, fiefs or friendships. The only thing that breaks my heart is the fact I'm not healthy enough to see the 2030s, maybe I'll leave £300 to my nephew with explicit instructions to buy Mount and Blade 3 when it releases, he's only just started school, so he should have graduated from university by the time it releases in early access, which will put him right around retirement age by the time it launches out of early access.
Really like that you tested this as a game without mods. I hear some people say "but this game has good mods, so its good", but if a game costs 50 bucks i at least await that its good and not good because of mods. Either way, thank you for this Review. Im really looking forward to stuff like smithing, the skill trees, siege weapons and the option to keep on playing as offspring after getting defeated. Thats like the Main "Features" i always heard, when comparing to warband. But never was sure if this is worth 50 Bucks, to me. Also hearing your Ideas to improve Bannerlord - i imagine how cool it would be if you could somehow work together with some modders to make these ideas come true. PS: Im intrigued to know, what price you would recommend this game for at its current state? Im still unsure if the 35 Bucks are good enough or if i should stick with Warband till Bannerlord, gets way cheaper.
I doubt the game is going to go cheaper than 35$ any time soon, seeing how it had its official launch a couple months ago... In 2 years from now, maybe. Honestly, I'm enjoying Bannerlord a lot more than Warband. Better combat, more tactical options, prettier graphics, a siege system that doesn't give you a brain aneurysm, a fully-simulated economy, and a lot more. The game may lack a lot of features that Warband has, but it has a more solid foundation. Warband is like an old shack built out of sticks, branches and rope... may fall apart at any time, but people like it because it has a lot of decorations (feasts, marriage, companion interactions and other things), while Bannerlord is like a fully built stone house whose rooms are almost completely empty. However, I fully believe that if the developers want to, they can turn Bannerlord into something much, much greater than Warband ever was. We've already seen what is possible with mods. Anyway, comment's getting long and I have work to do, so I may make a proper video on this subject.

Augh, so frustrating! The game has a lot of new features in it that I really want, but it's lacking stuff that Warband has that I also consider really important. Last I checked, the game was considered to have a significant lack of content. It's so close to being something that I'd instantly buy, but I'm not sure it's quite there yet. I keep thinking about my campaign in Warband, and of trying to find ways to make the character's story of what's happening in the game world more clear to the player. Trying to figure out how to write that logic out in clear words that might translate to being able to make some sort of mod. Are new Warband mods even a thing? This was an incredible video essay, and I loved every minute of it. I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of your channel.
In the " to battle" part where you discuss tactics... they can matter from time to time. One time I was outnumbered with 500 soldiers against 1k soldiers of the enemy. I used a simple formation of 2 shield walls, with the archers and crossbowmen on the back and 2 cones of rides capable of flanking the enemy... though I sufered heavy casualties... the enemies lost it all, allowing myself to retreat, put the wounded soldiers in the garrison, imprisson the lords, pick up garrisoned troops and use that momentum to snatch a castle and a town.
I did say tactics is not an absolute necessity as long as you know how to avoid getting outnumbered. But if you're a good tactician, you can win any battle... almost.
Not sure why you keep referring to the starter player as "peasant". You can start as the son of a noble knight and therefore you're a noble entitled to your family coat of arms (which you create)
I already played it, traded organs and set up an AI powered corporate colony. Until the hegemony rolled in, and I had to bribe them... for a while. But once their bribe reached 1 million credits, I kinda went a little crazy and globally warmed ALL of their planets with orbital bombardments.

considering the easiest achievement has been obtained by a mere 15% of players, I'd say they're not a good indicator for anything. Besides, I had 1500 hours in the game before achievements were added. :)
To review the game without mods then casually mention at the end that you can fix half the (mechanical) negatives by subbing to the appropriate mod seemed kinda odd. I know that in a conventional reviewing sense you wouldn't include mods but this is M&B we're talking about. I sincerely hope that anyone who played pimped-out Warband doesn't actually intend to play a modless vanilla Bannerlord campaign... Steam Workshop support dropping ONE MONTH before the game's 1.0 release says it all. Even TW don't expect you to play this game without mods, and they fully intend on letting "the community" (dev code for unpaid labour) finish the game for them. Honestly the 1.0 release was pretty meaningless in terms of actual development, and Bannerlord is still *at least* a year away from being in a state where we can unequivocally call it superior to Warband (thanks to mods, obviously). For now, it is definitely not a stretch to call something like "Prophecy of Pendor" a considerably more in-depth and feature-complete experience than Bannerlord. Hell, even vanilla Viking Conquest with just the Warband Diplomacy mod is miles ahead in some aspects. While I understand your editorial decision, I don't think it quite makes sense here - reviewing Bannerlord means reviewing Bannerlord _with mods_ and you probably could have waited a while longer before doing that. Perhaps in 2023 you can do an "update" review that includes all the "conventionally accepted" game-improvement mods that will be stable by that time. Look at Warband - even if you wanted the most authentic Calradic experience possible, with 99% real butter, there's still a half-dozen mods or-so that you just _wouldn't play the game without_ and you probably wouldn't even view the game in any way that excluded those mods. Just sayin'. Still a great video when taken as a piece of entertainment aimed at someone who already owns (and has played a few hundred hours of) Bannerlord. Thanks for the chuckles
On the economy bit, there was a bug that allowed you to cheese training up charm as a merc while gaining obnoxious amounts of influence that then the faction would have to pay out, this would bankrupt the faction and they where no longer able to recruit troops or raise armies and would crumble. I just remember even though it was a bug just being really impressed by the hidden economy in the game because it was actually real, the game wasnt just gifting troops to the lords cuz reasons and game mechanics to create the perception of them having to use the same economic system as you. No the game actually uses the same economic system as the player.
There were a lot of hidden mechanics that added a lot of depth to the game, despite not being bugs or exploits... but got banned nonetheless, because sometimes, the developers don't want us to have fun.
@@Halcylion I agree, it was fun, though im not losing sleep over that it got patched out. I am more saying, in a really long way, that bug showed off the depth to economy.
I wanna be able to make a clan army aka like some of the more well known Rouge clans have their own bandit type troop to soldiers, I wanna be able to custom make a infantry soldier with thr armor and weapons I want. Of course if you give then really good stuff thr upkeep should reflect that.
I dropped this a while back can't get rid of factions without your own turning on you. Make it an option in the settings for no negative relationship loss for everyone on execution and I'm back not fun having factions with nothing raiding you forever and having no way to get rid of them.
PartyElite has the best let's play, he hasn't played Bannerlord in a long time but is worth a mention because nothing comes close to his story of Partiiya al Eit
I think your main critiques are features you wish were in a game that is already ridden with features and has more on it`s way (before even talking about mods) and I think also some of the features you mentioned aren`t the main focus of the game anyway, so it kind of hurts the score of the game despite it being a super solid and steady release after two years of early access and a sudden release date drop, I was expecting a disaster but they actually delivered on the release date with rounding off any systems that felt unfinished (again, not new ones, but the ones that were in place and were lacking) and a pretty bug free game, this game is definitely a rare gem, most developers just use early access to get away with an unfinished product and never deliver, also the mod support isn`t taken for granted anymore so I feel in the current climate of gaming we should cherish this game and support the developers, and also rate it much higher, it is at least a 8/10 for me
In my current play through I executed the leaders of the Sturgians, Khusuits, and W.E. For the S.E. With a few dozen nobles of each faction. I’m not doing a genocide. I’m just solving a future problem the old fashioned way. 😊
I don't understand why noone gets castles or citys, when i was promoted to a lord my liege offered me almost 4 castles in our first war, i did participate in previous wars as a mercenary but after becoming a lord i stayed on the defensive guarding my villages and castles and destroying other armies whic tried to pillage. It's gotten to a point that i own 6 castles and 2 citys, and i had to turn down 1 city and 4 castles (i mainly organize my settlement so they prosper so getting new castles to improve while in mid repairs od the last one is really frustrating)

this game has fewer options than warband vanilla, so i really dont understand why its so basic, its more like a modding platform than a proper game, at least i expected more after playing better warband mods than bannerlord, honestly, its 6-7/10 max for the lack of viable gameplay options other than battles, all the quests are just repeatable clones, its really pretty sterile world, painful lack of roleplay options, not even enough things to buy when you are in mid game and basicly already have everything, devs should be ashamed that modders make better games basicly
Tributes are paid by the winner in my opinion. I absolutely ravished the Western Empire taking all but 2 castles/towns because the Assrai decided to join the fun. And i was paying 30k to them not them to me. That is a huge issue
I'm not usually very good when it comes to commanding armies that's why I usually let the sergeants take care of that while I ride around on my horse but I do have just one question though I'm pretty good at playing at this game but only if I have a big army and just out of curiosity, I know that if I use the perk with 100 sword I could eventually get more troops in my single party to get a bigger army and same goes for leadership and stewardship but are there any other perks that can increase my army and my single party without having to call other Lords at least increase my army in my party as much as possible but I don't know what other perks there are and I would really appreciate it cuz I only know of three?
Well, i played a lot the original Mount and Blade (2008) before the Warband was even the thing, I liked it more than Warband and i like the new Bannerlord even more than the original. It has probably gameplay-feeling closer to it than to the Warband. Great review, thank you.
I wish the battle mode on console had an easy mode..spend heaps of time setting up the battle only to die with one hit..sure can reload the battle but spend more time loading than playing if ya not a master at it...just not fun...the game itself is fun..but would be awsome if battle mode was more people friendly 🤔
I started with Napoleonic. Joined a lot of regiments. Still have some friends from back then. Although I'll be honest when you grow up with some people they don't like you when you're older not because you're worse because you're a dick when you're younger.
Bannerlord is not a terrieble game, its pretty good, but if you got bored? well few mods will fix it, but big mods as Game of Thrones or whatever those mods needs more time, as those will crash your games & you will get greyhair, higher blood pressure & annoy your neighbors at 2 am screaming over few mods that don t connect with that game as, taleworlds do minor updates but nothing major & modders not always keeps mods up to date with the game so there is that.
USE THE MOD SERVE AS A SOLDIER INSTEAD OF FREELANCER. The author of freelancer discontinued upkeep of the mod do to creative differences with the development team at taleworlds. I assume most everyone knows this, but halyclion doesn't see....b
In your options menu, go to keybindings and see "Switch Weapon Usage". On PC it's X by default, but if you're on console, that's up to you to figure out. But this doesn't work with all spears. Hover on whatever spear you're using and see if it has "Couched Lance" or "Brace" near the "one handed" and "two handed" labels.

But Mount and Blade 3 will have access to all the latest advancements in technology, everything from AI generated dialogue based on the context of your game and your actions, to novel strategies depending on all the variables of each battle, and AI that can actually participate in diplomacy making strategic marriages and making political decisions to gain more influence by setting themselves goals to get certain titles, fiefs or friendships.
The only thing that breaks my heart is the fact I'm not healthy enough to see the 2030s, maybe I'll leave £300 to my nephew with explicit instructions to buy Mount and Blade 3 when it releases, he's only just started school, so he should have graduated from university by the time it releases in early access, which will put him right around retirement age by the time it launches out of early access.

Really like that you tested this as a game without mods. I hear some people say "but this game has good mods, so its good", but if a game costs 50 bucks i at least await that its good and not good because of mods.
Either way, thank you for this Review. Im really looking forward to stuff like smithing, the skill trees, siege weapons and the option to keep on playing as offspring after getting defeated. Thats like the Main "Features" i always heard, when comparing to warband. But never was sure if this is worth 50 Bucks, to me.
Also hearing your Ideas to improve Bannerlord - i imagine how cool it would be if you could somehow work together with some modders to make these ideas come true.

Im intrigued to know, what price you would recommend this game for at its current state? Im still unsure if the 35 Bucks are good enough or if i should stick with Warband till Bannerlord, gets way cheaper.
I doubt the game is going to go cheaper than 35$ any time soon, seeing how it had its official launch a couple months ago... In 2 years from now, maybe. Honestly, I'm enjoying Bannerlord a lot more than Warband. Better combat, more tactical options, prettier graphics, a siege system that doesn't give you a brain aneurysm, a fully-simulated economy, and a lot more. The game may lack a lot of features that Warband has, but it has a more solid foundation.
Warband is like an old shack built out of sticks, branches and rope... may fall apart at any time, but people like it because it has a lot of decorations (feasts, marriage, companion interactions and other things), while Bannerlord is like a fully built stone house whose rooms are almost completely empty.
However, I fully believe that if the developers want to, they can turn Bannerlord into something much, much greater than Warband ever was. We've already seen what is possible with mods. Anyway, comment's getting long and I have work to do, so I may make a proper video on this subject.

Augh, so frustrating! The game has a lot of new features in it that I really want, but it's lacking stuff that Warband has that I also consider really important. Last I checked, the game was considered to have a significant lack of content. It's so close to being something that I'd instantly buy, but I'm not sure it's quite there yet. I keep thinking about my campaign in Warband, and of trying to find ways to make the character's story of what's happening in the game world more clear to the player. Trying to figure out how to write that logic out in clear words that might translate to being able to make some sort of mod. Are new Warband mods even a thing?

In the " to battle" part where you discuss tactics... they can matter from time to time. One time I was outnumbered with 500 soldiers against 1k soldiers of the enemy. I used a simple formation of 2 shield walls, with the archers and crossbowmen on the back and 2 cones of rides capable of flanking the enemy... though I sufered heavy casualties... the enemies lost it all, allowing myself to retreat, put the wounded soldiers in the garrison, imprisson the lords, pick up garrisoned troops and use that momentum to snatch a castle and a town.
I did say tactics is not an absolute necessity as long as you know how to avoid getting outnumbered. But if you're a good tactician, you can win any battle... almost.

Not sure why you keep referring to the starter player as "peasant". You can start as the son of a noble knight and therefore you're a noble entitled to your family coat of arms (which you create)

I already played it, traded organs and set up an AI powered corporate colony. Until the hegemony rolled in, and I had to bribe them... for a while. But once their bribe reached 1 million credits, I kinda went a little crazy and globally warmed ALL of their planets with orbital bombardments.

To review the game without mods then casually mention at the end that you can fix half the (mechanical) negatives by subbing to the appropriate mod seemed kinda odd. I know that in a conventional reviewing sense you wouldn't include mods but this is M&B we're talking about. I sincerely hope that anyone who played pimped-out Warband doesn't actually intend to play a modless vanilla Bannerlord campaign...
Steam Workshop support dropping ONE MONTH before the game's 1.0 release says it all. Even TW don't expect you to play this game without mods, and they fully intend on letting "the community" (dev code for unpaid labour) finish the game for them. Honestly the 1.0 release was pretty meaningless in terms of actual development, and Bannerlord is still *at least* a year away from being in a state where we can unequivocally call it superior to Warband (thanks to mods, obviously).
For now, it is definitely not a stretch to call something like "Prophecy of Pendor" a considerably more in-depth and feature-complete experience than Bannerlord. Hell, even vanilla Viking Conquest with just the Warband Diplomacy mod is miles ahead in some aspects. While I understand your editorial decision, I don't think it quite makes sense here - reviewing Bannerlord means reviewing Bannerlord _with mods_ and you probably could have waited a while longer before doing that. Perhaps in 2023 you can do an "update" review that includes all the "conventionally accepted" game-improvement mods that will be stable by that time. Look at Warband - even if you wanted the most authentic Calradic experience possible, with 99% real butter, there's still a half-dozen mods or-so that you just _wouldn't play the game without_ and you probably wouldn't even view the game in any way that excluded those mods. Just sayin'.
Still a great video when taken as a piece of entertainment aimed at someone who already owns (and has played a few hundred hours of) Bannerlord. Thanks for the chuckles

You asked for a game that lives on without you... Kenshi is probably the best example of it.
On the economy bit, there was a bug that allowed you to cheese training up charm as a merc while gaining obnoxious amounts of influence that then the faction would have to pay out, this would bankrupt the faction and they where no longer able to recruit troops or raise armies and would crumble. I just remember even though it was a bug just being really impressed by the hidden economy in the game because it was actually real, the game wasnt just gifting troops to the lords cuz reasons and game mechanics to create the perception of them having to use the same economic system as you. No the game actually uses the same economic system as the player.
There were a lot of hidden mechanics that added a lot of depth to the game, despite not being bugs or exploits... but got banned nonetheless, because sometimes, the developers don't want us to have fun.
@@Halcylion I agree, it was fun, though im not losing sleep over that it got patched out. I am more saying, in a really long way, that bug showed off the depth to economy.
I wanna be able to make a clan army aka like some of the more well known Rouge clans have their own bandit type troop to soldiers, I wanna be able to custom make a infantry soldier with thr armor and weapons I want. Of course if you give then really good stuff thr upkeep should reflect that.

I dropped this a while back can't get rid of factions without your own turning on you. Make it an option in the settings for no negative relationship loss for everyone on execution and I'm back not fun having factions with nothing raiding you forever and having no way to get rid of them.

I think your main critiques are features you wish were in a game that is already ridden with features and has more on it`s way (before even talking about mods) and I think also some of the features you mentioned aren`t the main focus of the game anyway, so it kind of hurts the score of the game despite it being a super solid and steady release after two years of early access and a sudden release date drop, I was expecting a disaster but they actually delivered on the release date with rounding off any systems that felt unfinished (again, not new ones, but the ones that were in place and were lacking) and a pretty bug free game, this game is definitely a rare gem, most developers just use early access to get away with an unfinished product and never deliver, also the mod support isn`t taken for granted anymore so I feel in the current climate of gaming we should cherish this game and support the developers, and also rate it much higher, it is at least a 8/10 for me

In my current play through I executed the leaders of the Sturgians, Khusuits, and W.E. For the S.E. With a few dozen nobles of each faction. I’m not doing a genocide. I’m just solving a future problem the old fashioned way. 😊

I don't understand why noone gets castles or citys, when i was promoted to a lord my liege offered me almost 4 castles in our first war, i did participate in previous wars as a mercenary but after becoming a lord i stayed on the defensive guarding my villages and castles and destroying other armies whic tried to pillage. It's gotten to a point that i own 6 castles and 2 citys, and i had to turn down 1 city and 4 castles (i mainly organize my settlement so they prosper so getting new castles to improve while in mid repairs od the last one is really frustrating)
I actually got plenty of castles and cities until Caladog rejected me. I just added that bit as a joke. :)

this game has fewer options than warband vanilla, so i really dont understand why its so basic, its more like a modding platform than a proper game, at least i expected more after playing better warband mods than bannerlord, honestly, its 6-7/10 max for the lack of viable gameplay options other than battles, all the quests are just repeatable clones, its really pretty sterile world, painful lack of roleplay options, not even enough things to buy when you are in mid game and basicly already have everything, devs should be ashamed that modders make better games basicly

Tributes are paid by the winner in my opinion. I absolutely ravished the Western Empire taking all but 2 castles/towns because the Assrai decided to join the fun. And i was paying 30k to them not them to me. That is a huge issue

I'm not usually very good when it comes to commanding armies that's why I usually let the sergeants take care of that while I ride around on my horse but I do have just one question though I'm pretty good at playing at this game but only if I have a big army and just out of curiosity, I know that if I use the perk with 100 sword I could eventually get more troops in my single party to get a bigger army and same goes for leadership and stewardship but are there any other perks that can increase my army and my single party without having to call other Lords at least increase my army in my party as much as possible but I don't know what other perks there are and I would really appreciate it cuz I only know of three?
Steward, leadership, clan level, and a quartermaster are all ways of increasing your party size, I'm sitting at a party size of 279 right now
You can further increase your party size if you're a king and enact the Royal Guard and Noble Retinues policies.

Well, i played a lot the original Mount and Blade (2008) before the Warband was even the thing, I liked it more than Warband and i like the new Bannerlord even more than the original. It has probably gameplay-feeling closer to it than to the Warband. Great review, thank you.

I'm having the same issue, and I doubt there's any fix to it. Those formations used to work properly a few patches ago, so it's most likely a bug.

I wish the battle mode on console had an easy mode..spend heaps of time setting up the battle only to die with one hit..sure can reload the battle but spend more time loading than playing if ya not a master at it...just not fun...the game itself is fun..but would be awsome if battle mode was more people friendly 🤔
I started with Napoleonic. Joined a lot of regiments. Still have some friends from back then. Although I'll be honest when you grow up with some people they don't like you when you're older not because you're worse because you're a dick when you're younger.
Bannerlord is not a terrieble game, its pretty good, but if you got bored? well few mods will fix it, but big mods as Game of Thrones or whatever those mods needs more time, as those will crash your games & you will get greyhair, higher blood pressure & annoy your neighbors at 2 am screaming over few mods that don t connect with that game as, taleworlds do minor updates but nothing major & modders not always keeps mods up to date with the game so there is that.
USE THE MOD SERVE AS A SOLDIER
INSTEAD OF FREELANCER.
The author of freelancer discontinued upkeep of the mod do to creative differences with the development team at taleworlds.

how do you lower your spear?
In your options menu, go to keybindings and see "Switch Weapon Usage". On PC it's X by default, but if you're on console, that's up to you to figure out.
But this doesn't work with all spears. Hover on whatever spear you're using and see if it has "Couched Lance" or "Brace" near the "one handed" and "two handed" labels.
