- The cantata 'Ich geh und suche mit Verlangen', performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society directed by Shunske Sato, is one of several dialogue cantatas written by Bach. As in the case of the other dialogues, the lyrics Bach used were already suited to the form beforehand. Bach underlines the form musically: a characteristic element in nearly all his dialogue cantatas is the choice of soprano and bass as the only soloists. The underlying idea is always the same. The soul (soprano) and Christ (bass) converse together and eventually declare their love for one another.

Lebhafte und wunderschöne Aufführung dieser kompakten und fein komponierten Kirchenkantate mit gut harmonisierten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Originalinstrumente sowie herrlichen Stimmen beider genialen Solisten. Der intelligente und unvergleichliche Violinist/Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Barockensemble im gut analysierten Tempo und mit perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik. Alles ist wundervoll!

Stephan MacLeod is fantastic. Unlike many basses who are all resonance, each pitch is clearly defined. The sound is natural and not forced. Very easy on the ears.
I always point out that the Baron Ochs/ King Philip kind of late 19th C basso has as little to do with the baroque singer of the same general tessitura as a harpsichord has with a Steinway grand. One only needs to think of all the times a bass voice is paired by Bach or Handel with a trumpet obbligato. That is why even as late as Rossini (think Maometto II) a bass singer can be trusted with elaborate coloratura.

Organist is Matthias Havinga. Pity they don't mention him in the description. Apart from that the whole thing (including camerawork) was absolutely superb!
As an organist, I agree! Ha! We always get left out. Just kidding, and excellent performance by ALL the musicians. Although I believe there were some edits. In some shots, Havinga is wearing a wedding ring, and in others, he is not. Look carefully. I supposed he could have put it on and taken off between movements.
it's true that the shot isn't bad at all and it's very detailed by the way but by saying it alone I'm saying something that everyone has already noticed of course I guess
@@scottwexlin6456 :) You watched very carefully! I am his wife and he sometimes swaps his ring to the other hand (or takes it off for a small while), he could have done that between movements indeed.

@@hgroenleer I noticed that keyboardists often wear their rings on the right hand. Is this a fact of life in Holland or just a habit among musicians? Here in Canada we usually wear wedding rings on the left hand.

Oh, please--he is OUTSTANDING. Have always loved his playing, though I don't play a period instrument myself. I prefer to listen to Bach on period instruments but am grateful to get to perform it on, and with, modern instruments.
Every minute is extremely beautiful.
But my favorite part is "Dich hab ich je und je geliebet (Arie)" starting at 20:28

Dear God, the gratitude I feel for listening to this before I die. I know, the 'hyperbole' is evident, but be it! All musicians without exceptions have it mastered, but the soprano is really feeling it most!

Wow that bass part was seriously well sung in the last aria, love the stability. What a difficult bass part, but not too bizarre written by Bach; very baroque aesthetic, but still beautifully melodious
