Searching for Lifer Timber Rattlesnakes in NY

- Well I drove 40 minutes to a spot I had been scoping out on google. I came here with the intention of finding Timber Rattlesnakes, and any other herp I could turn up. I searched for about 2.5 hours. Ulster County NY. Although I had a snake hook no venomous/protected species were handled. It was solely for flipping rocks safely.
Species List:
-Northern Slimy Salamander(Plethodon glutinosus)
-Eastern Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix)
-Northern Ringneck Snake (Diadophis punctatus edwardsii)
-Northern Black Racer (Juvenile) (Coluber c. constrictor)
-Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina)
-Northern Black Racer (Adult, more like 5ft) (Coluber c. constrictor)
-Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus)
-Northern Ringneck Snake (see above)
-TImber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus)
Been herping for about 70 years. You are doing a great job in many ways.. It is refreshing to see a TH-cam herper who knows how to turn rocks properly and safely. Camera work could use a little improvement, but time will take care of that. Keep up the good work. I subscribed and hope to see many more vids.
All around nice work and I admire your restraint with some of these comments. I'm heading out this weekend to see about getting some photos. They may not be terribly exciting, but I have always had a particular liking for a nice docile ringneck or green grass snake.

Dutchess county herper here, albeit not much luck as of late (specifically was a dull fall for me herping). Glad to see another person out there herping. Anywhere in Dutchess county you’d recommend??

What an excellent video of a great day. I love the variety of herps.
I've seen tons of Timbers over the years and I can only think of one that was in a hurry to hide. Not only were your snakes quick to be on the move but they were quick to rattle too. As you see more, you'll find that they usually give you more time to observe them. One thing I might suggest as you continue to document your finds is to use your handheld camera to take video in conjunction with the hat cam. It's nice to be able to zoom in for video footage. It won't hinder your photography capability either.
This is fantastic video, it's great that you were able to capture your first Timber(s) on video the way you did. Good luck and continued success. We live in a Timber rich area.

If this is where I think it is, I’ve never seen one in over 35 years! In the 80’s there were many fires that drove them down and a 6’ long TR was killed on someone’s patio!! Without giving it away, I hear that you are guaranteed to see or hear one. Not to mention it’s the highest concentration of copperheads in NY.

Great job moving the trash. I may need to get out your way and herp. So many flippable rocks! Looks like quite a few mosquitoes or flies too.
I grew up in Alleghany county NY. My grandfather had thrown old tin roofing into tall weeds outback not far from the creek. As a child, I would go down and flip these pieces of tin over, and catch all sorts of snakes underneath them.
This was before the days of the internet to verify anything, and everyone that lived in the area would tell you that rattlesnakes didn't go above Pennsylvania. We lived near the Genesee river (which flows north), and every once in a while, you would hear that a rattle snake from PA was brought up during a flood. Anyways, being told growing up that there were no venomous snakes, and me actively hunting them without fear as a child, could have ended really badly. In all my years growing up in the country of NY state, I have never once seen a rattlesnake, and here you are finding them left and right.
There's many reasons for people being very unaware of venomous snakes in new York, especially timber rattlesnakes, and one of them is because there's maybe only 2 hospitals in the state that carry antivenom antidotes, and they are not for the venomous snakes native to this area they are antidotes for snakes at local zoos.
That's one statement I'll NEVER say, "I hope I find a rattlesnake!" :(

I love ringnecks as a landscaper i see them alot, most of the time tucked in small shrubs and bushes and in piles of leaves against houses..

Man, I used to climb every weekend at the Gunks in New Paltz. It looked exactly like that. We saw a handful of harmless snakes over the years but never even thought about stepping on a rattler or copperhead. Never even heard anyone talk about snake encounters. And we always walked off barefoot because the climbing shoes were so tight. Cool video!!
Yeah the gunks definitely has copperheads and rattlesnakes, I would say copperheads are a more real risk though, as the habitat they like is similar to rock climbing areas. Next time bring a second pair of comfortable hiking shoes to be safe!
Yeah, I grew up in Sullivan County terrain that looked just like that, running and climbing and playing over all the rocks all the time, and never remember seeing or hearing a snake. Never once even thought about it. You'd know they were around when someone mentioned hitting a rattlesnake with their car or something. I once saw a timber in Minnewaska, decades later, just chilling on the side of a dirt road. Not a climbing area, just woods.

Along the Rail Trail in Ancram there are signs warning of rattlesnakes and the woods resemble the ones you filmed here. They have been sighted many times in Sharon, Connecticut.
There are many turtles in Dutchess and Columbia Counties and in the spring you often see them crossing the roads. Considerate drivers stop to let them pass.

Yes we have em all over western ny. Noone ever believes me when I say we do until just 4 days ago I found a huge 4 foot timber rattlesnake in canisteo ny. But ppl will tell ya we don't have em. Until ya show em a picture

Over New York all the way along the southern border, through the Hudson valley and the Adirondacks, plus the Pygmy rattle snake in Syracuse
They are everywhere. I catch them all the time in st.lawrwnce county area

I live in Delaware but I never see copperheads or timber rattlesnakes, I really really want to see one. I love snakes
Where about in UC? I live in UC and have never come across one (good thing, I am not a snake person). I have had the surprise of being on the Ashokan Reservoir twice when these Black snakes decided to leave from under the boat seat I was standing next to and went right between my legs. One was absolutely without exaggeration a 7'+ and fatter than those rattlers you found. It slowly made it's way up the gunwale and then exited.

Do it! There are hardly any POV herp videos out there and I find them to be the most enjoyable.

Does one need to keep a bottle of Anti Venom while hiking in known areas of Rattlesnakes? if accidentally bitten how long until the poison takes effect? Don't think one would have time to wait for help to find you on a trail then able to administer proper medicine or transport one to the local hospital in time to rescue and full recovery?
I am pretty sure I saw a rattlesnake on the east coast. It looked like a southern pacific rattlesnake. Can I send you a few pictures and videos? Do you think you could identify it for me?
Not sure where in NY you are herping but I grew up in the Hudson Valley and Kakiat Park is infested with Timber's. I live in Florida now but for great herping check it out ! They have had someone actually go missing up there and they found him yards away from the parking lot ,dead in the brush . He succumbed to a rattlesnake bite while trying to get back to his vehicle. This was probably atleast 30 years ago when I was living there ,but I'm sure the timber population there is still very healthy

lamecow21 this was taken around 1-2 but its not necessarily the best time to see them. Its mostly temperature/weather dependant

Hudson, I am getting old and I have never seen a Timber Rattler in NYS. It is a dream of mine to one day see one. I am in good shape and could get into any habitat I need to. Would you consider guiding me?

In NYS according to DEC law, ALL reptiles and amphibians are fully protected. The only ones that can be taken are snapping turtles and frogs but only during their respective open seasons. I enjoyed your video though.

I was wearing thick leather boots and snake gaiters (essentially shin guards)
What's up with 2 foot hooks? And how often do you find juvenile rattlers?
Cici Bradley I dont use the hook to handle, just flip some rocks so a smaller sturdier hook works better. Uhh I find Juvi rattlers occasionally, except birthing season where there are a ton.
But I see ring neck snakes ALL the time they are pretty common here but most of them are small

How common are these guys in NY, namely the copperhead and timbers? Any tips for off trail hikers? I tend to explore Rocky areas like that, perhaps a really bad idea.
Jason Oliver They aren't generally common. NYS DEC has range maps which should be semi-accurate. But yes I would exercise extreme caution when putting your hands in/near rocky(especially sunny) places. Avoid them altogether if possible and watch your step.
Hudson Herper Putting my hands in, definitely not going to happen. walking past a crack or gap however, that's fairly likely.
Jason Oliver you should be fine walking past them. Their first response is to sit still so unless you step directly on it or reach in a crevice you should be okay. You could purchase snake gaiters, they are kneeguards to repel any bites on the leg/calf.
Hudson Herper Down in New Mexico, we wore snake gaiters. Up here in NY, I didn't think they were a concern, until watching your videos.
This is NY, what part bud? Where in New York? I used to live in the city. Used to catch garter snakes water snakes and ribbon snakes in East Tremont Pelham Bay and Woodlawn. Don't forget guys always put them back respect nature and it will respect you..

I didn't see any wood turtles in this video.. I saw an eastern box turtle. Wood turtles are protected but I wouldn't necessarily consider them rare.

David Berquist you mean the small black one with an orange ring behind ita head? It would be a Northern Ringneck Snake. In Tx you have a different subspecies of ringneck snake but they are very similar.

I seen one today. i didn't like it. i couldn't figure out what the noise was and i look in the direction with my dogs and it was a rattlesnake...we got out of there fast.

Psy MIND First off, never ever flip rocks, your desecrating den habitat/rookery areas! The Timber Rattlesnake is strictly protected by law. The copperhead you saw is a N.copperhead. My close friend has been marking rattles for many years studying den populations as well as geographical distribution. I still can't believe you in these areas flipping rocks

Kimberly Williams snakes are an important part of our ecosystem and belong in the woods more than I do. Killing snakes is stupid. Not to mention illegal and dangerous.
If you truly love snakes so much just camp a bunch of days in the right spot. Maybe you'll wake up with a few venomous snakes slithering in your crotch and around your entire body. Maybe if the deadly venomous snakes find out your looking for them, they come looking for you in your bedroom sometime. Now you'll be so happy, wouldn't that be COOL!
