Petco and Petsmart Plants; Which plant should you buy

  • Most plants that are for sale at petsmart and petco have been grown out of water. meaning, when you put your new plant into water it'll start to wither away and slowly die. The only plant I have had success with from these stores is Java Fern. It is a very hardy plant and will transition nicely from air to water.

Its called melting and thats how they adapt to being underwater then they will grow new leaves.

They are supposed to do that .. the melt the old leaves and eventually grow new ones that are adapted to be fully submerged... I bet u seen them drop the leaves and was oops they died. And threw them away when they werent

As others have said make sure you go to multiple sources on topics on TH-cam. Yes aquatic plants grown in air will melt leaves when fully submerged, but they will eventually grow new leaves.
I've experienced this myself. The plants I purchased from my local fish store were grown in water and adapt with little to no melting...the ones I got from Petco or PetSmart grown in air always melt but bounce back.

I appreciate the comment. Another thing to account for is the variances of people water conditions. Most of the plants I’ve gotten from the box stores melt and the roots will rot out afterwords. Plants like anubias will bounce back after a few months of floating around.

I’ve never tried Java fern, but I bought a few plants from petsmart a few years ago, and my Anubias Congensis was the only survivor. It’s still doing well in my tank.

I have had really good luck with the tube plants from Petsmart anyway. Never bought them from Petco. I have bought Anubias, swords, crypts, and java fern in the tubes and nevwr had any issues at all!

And it the costs for those plants near me are between $10-14!! Hell no. I go to my local mom and pop aquarium store and get my plants for $3 each. And they are all doing wonderful.

My java fern also died! *or more like i thought plus I also planted it in substrate LOL* u cant plat java fern or else it dies and also im pretty sure mine melted away to! I think most plants do melt and then grow new and adapted leaves👍🏽 so a dieing plant that has just was transition d from being grown out of water then to submerged under it will most likely melt away then regrow so always give them a shot after they have melted away and see if they grow back

Ive bought tons of those plants and never had a problem.... I honestly prefer them to Amazon swords that are grown submerged and I strongly recommend the tissue culture crypts

Our Pet Smart submerges all their plants when they come in, so if you wait a bit they don't melt back. I have 4 different types of Anubias and some Amazon Swords that didn't melt back at all. My grasses are all doing good and they didn't melt either. I refuse to buy Java Fern because of the BBA issues.

water wisteria too, now even though at first mines seemed like it was going to die (I had eco-complete and dosed with seachem flourite) I noticed about in week 4 that the floaters and the planted stuff started getting new growth. When I bought it it had broader leaves when it grows submerged the leaves thin out. Point being is I started with one plant and now have enough for like 3-4 tanks. I had to "cull" a bunch of trimmings as when I started I only had 1 tank, but then mts kicked in and I had enough for the rest of my tanks and then some. My personal experience though, it hasn't been doing too good in my dirted tank, I put in a floater and it's doing ok, but the idea is to plant, full disclosure I may have planted too deep but some of the roots are out of the substrate so they may actually survive. My amazon sword made it in one tank died in another. Like a dumbass I planted my anubias barteri, (I'm trying to save the ryzomes in the dirted tank) but you're not supposed to plant ryzome plants you superglue or string to a rock or something so they don't float. My anubias nana(petco) really slow grower a year almost to the date they got more bushy but they didn't spread, at this point I new not to plant anubias and those thrived, the one tank I didn't dose had started getting holes in the leaves but once I started dosing all was good with the plant but fertilizers introduces amonia/nitrites/nitrates and other stuff that isn't too good for fish but if you're heavily planted **it should be ok**. I killed half my fish dosing too much so now only a few drops 1ml in a 10G, 2ml in a 20G and a few drops in my 5Gs.

Just an example that you should never single source your info. This guy's experience was valid, he bought immersed plants and then planted them submerged. They did what they were supposed to do and adapted to submerged growth (which does look a lot like dying). He can't be blamed that his personal experience didn't include the perfectly natural melt/regrowth adaptation that goes along with planting a tank. He was just trying to provide helpful information to people who watched his videos. Don't hate on this one guy trying to do the right thing with limited knowledge, hate on yourself if you only watched one video and took the info as gospel.

Not trying to be ugly but this is the worst advice ever. First of all as some below mentioned aquatic plants melt back and then you get new growth. The process of growing in water is different, mostly with CO2 and Oxygen processing, and so the leaves for under water need different properties. 2nd of all throwing away plants because of black beard algae is just as stupid. Take it out, dip it in a wash with 1/10 hydrogen peroxide to water ratio and you will kill off the black beard algae. I agree Java Fern is awesome but the rest of the commentary is just wrong.
