I actually used to work at in the aquatic department and have been a planted take enthusiast for a while. Tried to bring this problem up at the regional level. Couldn't get it across to them. But I always made sure to inform customers. And actually got in written up a few times.

coffeebeann1 exactly lol. The people who work there mostly are only there for the check which is totally understandable. No one is hired based off of knowledge of animals/plants, they are hired just to do some typical retail work and that’s it. Some people swear they are experts and I’ve seen some get mad when they are told “I don’t know” by the employees.

I got a purple waffle from a local pet store, thinking it was fully aquatic. That was about five months ago. I kept it in my tank because all of the individual plants are still growing, but when I notice it finally giving away, I'll remove it. Since then, I research each plant I see in store before I even buy it.

I get so mad at my local Petco and PetSmart. They will sometimes sell plants both packaged individually, which will say if they are aquatic or not, and then also fully submerged in an aquarium, which will not tell you if they are aquatic or not. In the past I accidentally bought the white ribbon plant and mondo grass because they were fully submerged and I didn't do any research beforehand.

Nice video but I need to pull you up on a few things. For the record my family has owned a wholesale nursery for over 50 years, I worked there for over 20 years. I have commercially bred Bettas
Pothos is not Philodendron sp. it is a Epipremnum species. Totally different, though neither is aquatic.
    Dracaena is pronounced Dra-see-na
Waffle plants do very well in aquariums.
I have had syngoniums do very well, mainly the pink and white butterfly varieties.
Keep up the good work, I do enjoy your vids.

Sadly I see this all the time in the pet stores I visit for my aquatic needs, Sandy (Dracaena sanderiana) is almost always in every store I visit, fully submerged just waiting for a unknowledge buyer to come and pick it up.. I think this is the biggest mistake newbies makes when they start planted tanks, they go to a shop, look for plants they think look cool and the plants totally dies on them cus the plants aint even made to be fully submerged. Pet stores should really change this imo

I have tanks with some of the plants you spoke about in them each. All of them are doing great. In fact my shrimp tank I dont need to do water changes at all. The only plants I've never had luck with were topper plants. I think soil, and what's you have in them that makes a difference. Plus some plants you do just like the bamboo at first and then plant in the tank when its tall enough. Then your topper plant isn't needed as much, more so if you have frog bite or duckweed.

I bought the purple waffle plant. After I got home, I googled it, and discovered it's non-aquatic nature. I took it back out of my tank, stuffed it into a HOB filter, and it wilted within an hour. It came back after being submerged. I finally killed it the other day, trying the HOB experiment again. My big struggle right now is keeping my floating plants alive. The tanks with sponge filters have weak lighting, and the tanks with too much light still have HOB filters. I'm in the process of changing them out.

I have that purple plant in my Aquarium it’s doing amazing, it’s been a few months now. One time I accidentally up rooted it when I was doing a water change, and the roots where gorgeous. Then again, I do use CO2 in my tank, it might need it to survive under water, like Monte Carlo, it’s originally used out of water, and only drives in tanks when using CO2

I learned the hard way not to put things I know nothing about into my aquarium. Ebay is just as bad. I find it's best to do my research and pick out in advance what I want and buy only that. Even if a plant is truly aquatic some plants do better in some tanks than others. It's easier to have lush plants when you add ones that love the kind of habitat you've got. If you buy a plant that doesn't do well and then try to change your tank to suit it you may wind up wrecking the ecosystem. If you've got a good thing going stick with it and buy more plants that will be happy in it.

I bought what Petco called an El Nino fern. Not an aquatic plant. It needs to have its leaves above water. They had it listed as true aquatic and to submerge. It actually grew in my tank and did not die. The reason i took it out was because it came with BBA and I didnt want it spreading

@@lideabarker8161 same. I was surprised and extremely disappointed that there aren't any local fish stores near me... I have to go (far) out of town. The closest pet stores are the chain stores, and they're still a 40 minute to an hour, hour and a half bus ride depending on the time. It's been much easier just to order online... Plus price comparison. But for actual fish, I'd have to go to one of those, since my apartment package and mail system isn't always reliable, nor available right away... I'm not trusting that with any fish!

I have a purple waffle bed the size of a pickup truck. I keep it shaded and moist. I will take a cutting, and sink it in my aquarium. As soon as one leaf melts. I pull it out and replant it. And replace it with a new cutting..
I do that with a lot of plants. But I always monitored of water, change the water if needed.. But very rare, due to monitoring.. Lol..

I’ve bought numerous pieces of bamboo from petco and had them underwater in my past tanks. They never died and actually grew. But I ended up moving and selling the fish and plants. When I moved and went to petco in my new state they informed me that bamboo isn’t fully aquatic. Had no idea after all these years. I also just recently found out that you shouldn’t burry java ferns. Which I’ve kept 3 of them before and always buried them, always wondered why it would take 6 months before the plant really took off and started growing. But now I know. There’s always misconception about the fish industry and unfortunately even the people selling us the stuff don’t know.

Damn it I just bought a bunch of purple waffle plants.I'm an American living in Taiwan and that's one of the plants they sell at the pet store for fish.
But actually it seems to be doing fine I put it in about a week ago. It was a stem plant and started growing roots and I haven't had to really remove any leaves. Maybe the temperature will help.
I'd be so disappointed if all the purple waffle died. I'll have to keep a close eye on it since I have seven tanks. I have five female bettas into and they each have their own take

PetCo sells a great many variegated Dracena. It says there right on the packaging - 'semi-aquatic'. It's the last plant that he showed us. 'Semi' means that the plant is not to be totally submerged. PetCo is not at fault regarding this plant - it says right there on the plastic tube it comes in.
Learn the difference between 'immersion' and 'emmersion - the first grows 'in' the water; emmersion refers to a plant which grows up-out of the water.
Go on-line; Ebay sells every plant under the sun, and you'll have no doubt that the plant that they're selling you is meant to be one or the other.

    • @davidh1946

I think he meant that they are aquatic if the leaves dry out ; terrestrial plants take a lot longer than 5-10 min to dry out unless you live in the desert.

I think I fell for A. sessilis. After all these years,I still bought what was probably the only non real aquatic plant being sold at the pet store. It seemed in good condition..but at home,I noticed in brighter light- the leaves have that silvery sheen that you see when you dunk a land plant underwater.
Wait and see. It was just generic bunch plant..no name. woo- I hit every wrong button on that one.

What really get me about buying plant from petco is never getting a specific name for the plant. Like anubis, I bought 2 there on the same day with the same label and they are different strains. It's nice to make a impulse buy of plants locally but hard to get rid of them down the line if you don't enjoy them
