    In my bunny's shedding season I actually take a cheap hand held vacuum and suck all of the loose fur off. My bunny loves it. He is deaf and can't hear it so it doesn't scare him at all. When I pull out the vacuum he comes running over and when I sit down he jumps into my lap. He loves it. One time he actually fell asleep while I was vacuuming his fur off.

      Not really. It's all loose and I never actually put the vacuum to his skin.

      As long as you don't put it to his skin. I gently pull the loose hair out

    I am getting my first bunny tomorrow. I am so nervous, but so excited at the same time. I have had cats and dogs my whole life and now I am just by myself and need a furry companion that is small and can be put away without issues when im not home. I have all the supplies, and the bunny ready for pick up. Thanks for uploading these videos! They have truly helped me out!

  • @BudgetBunny

    So glad I could help! Rocky becomes very cranky when he's shedding which unfortunately is a long process for him - he seems to always shed the most and it takes the longest.

  • @MegaPiranaha88

    Oh my, look at all of that fur! Poor Rocky, it must've felt great to get all of that off. Benji is shedding a bit now, I forgot to get a brush when I took a trip to Petco and Petsmart but I think I'll drop by Target tomorrow since I saw a small cat brush there. The little animals in your area must love all of that fur for their nests! I do the same with my dog's (Max) fur except I just leave it in the backyard. I see the little sparrows and other birds swoop down and take it away the next day.

    I am so glad I came across your video! I am a first time rabbit owner. I was getting worried because he just started shedding a few days ago and he's been hiding out a bit more than usual. I didn't realize that they would get grumpy and irritable. Any question I would have had about him shedding you answered in this video =)

  • @BudgetBunny
    @BudgetBunny  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They sure do! I find Willow only goes through one big shed a year whereas Honey and Rocky always seem to be shedding haha.

    JESSIE P > I can not reply to your comment directly as you are not linked to Google+. I recommend checking out your local humane society or shelter. You can do an internet search for rabbit rescues in your area as well! Rabbits are the third most abandoned animal in shelters and there are so many out there waiting for a loving forever home. x

  • @BudgetBunny
    @BudgetBunny  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi there! There's no right or wrong way to set up the cage it's just what seems to make sense to you. Rabbits generally like to pick a corner to use as a toilet so I would figure out which corner she likes to poop in, then put her litterbox there. I would also put her hay rack above the litterbox because they love to munch while they poo! Don't be surprised if she's not the greatest at using her litterbox yet! I find baby bunnies very messy!

  • @mypets321
    @mypets321 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks. For the past few weeks they have been getting about 7 ounces of pellets a day. I'll try a hay variety. :)

  • @BudgetBunny
    @BudgetBunny  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    KASIDY ANDERSON > I cannot reply to your comment directly as it is not connected to Google+. I would take the rabbits to the vet to have them thoroughly health checked. The loss of fur could be from a nutrient or vitamin deficiency and she may be required to go on some supplements to help her. You can weigh weekly (or daily in the beginning) if you want to make sure that she is eating enough. If you notice that her weight is dropping then I would make sure she is fed her pellets in an area separated from the other rabbit - either give her some of her own floor time or separate the pen etc. Also the most important part of a rabbit's diet is HAY. That should make up about 85% of their diet! As long as she has access to large amounts of unlimited timothy hay and is eating that as well as maintaining a consistent weight then I wouldn't worry too much about the pellet intake. x

  • @BudgetBunny
    @BudgetBunny  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awwwww how cute! We have tons of birds, squirrels and chippers in our backyard now that we put a feeder up who all love the hair I bring them heehee. It makes great use of it and I like knowing that our little backyard wildlife has some where cozy to sleep at night :)

    @middleC17 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow! An obscene amount of hair is right! It must be very satisfying for both him and you to get it all off of him! And I'm sure the birds appreciate the nesting material =).

      @BudgetBunny  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh thank you! :) What type of hammy do you have?

  • @MegaPiranaha88
    @MegaPiranaha88 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's so nice! I would try to attract all of the squirrels, wild mice, birds and other critters if my mom didn't want them! There's this one squirrel that was eating all of our apricots off of our tree. We picked them early since he would only eat the ripe ones. Now they're all gone but I still see him hopping across the wire now and then. :)

  • @BudgetBunny
    @BudgetBunny  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi there! Hay is an absolute necessity for rabbits. Rabbits need to eat continuously to prevent their body from going in to stasis (where their system shuts down and they die). Not only does it provide nutrients and help proper gut function but it also helps wear down their every growing teeth. A rabbit's diet should consist of unlimited hay, a small amount of pellets and a cup of veggies daily. You can start with alfala as she's less than 6 months old and then switch to timothy after that. :)

  • @Fluffy_Love
    @Fluffy_Love 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow! I didn't know bunnies shed that much. I get about a handful with each swipe of the brush off my Collie when she blows her coat. It's great for nesting material, the birds and squirrels fight over it. I also love to needlefelt with it. My boyfriend's favorite animal is the cat, but he's highly allergic to them. Do rabbits produce a lot of dander? Is it safe to bathe them? We bathe our dogs and cats, but we're not sure about rabbits.

    I have a Holland Lop Bunny she is 3 months old will be 4 months on the 6th. I am new to all this bunny stuff. I give her carrots, lettuce, Oats, the green bunny pellets, and fresh water everyday for food. So is it important I try and buy hay will she be able ok on what I am giving her or is hay a necessity?

  • @BudgetBunny
    @BudgetBunny  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's possible they don't like the hay. Try mixing in some timothy or meadow hay to give variety. Rabbits are considered mature at around 6 mos. old (they can start breeding after only 2 mos. old!) so I would start weaning them off of the alfalfa. It's possible if they're getting unlimited pellets they aren't hungry enough for hay. In this case I would cut back on the pellets. Many rabbits also love 'carbs' (pellets) over their healthy hay and won't graze if they've got something better to eat.

    Hi!I love buns to.my first bunnies were adopted from a shelter.My beloved lionhead quickly died.Then the other bunny i adopted,Bella,a french lop,became sick to.She became very thin and tired.Though she eats as much as all my other six bunnies eat.We took her to the vet which saved her life.Even though we nursed her,she is still skinny.I think that there was something at the shelter or in her background that caused her to be like that.Do you know what i can do tou get her to gain weight?

  • @BudgetBunny
    @BudgetBunny  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It just seems to depend on the rabbit. Willow hardly ever sheds but once in a while does a big shed where she looks completely ridiculous for a while! Poor Rocky seems to always be shedding - he gets through one shed and before we know it he's shedding again! I've heard of people that knit with it, it would be soooo soft! My understanding was that rabbits were fairly hypoallergenic, it's mainly things like their urine and the hay you have to feed them that could cause his allergies to kick up.

    Don't worry :) I don't find rabbits really shed in the first year of their life as they're still developing their adult coat. It wasn't until mine were each about a year old that they started going through regular shedding cycles. Even now they don't all shed at the same time and sometimes one will shed much more than the other. Willow is short haired so she doesn't really shed at all. Just depends on their type of fur :) Consider yourself lucky if you don't have much of a shedder hehehe

    My sister is in college and has three rabbits she gave me two of them because she could not take care of them. I don't think they are very healthy right now. They are super friendly and nice, both girls, but i feel like the one eats all the food and the other one doesn't. The one that i don't think is getting enough food is losing its fur around her feet, is that bad? meaning why do you think that is happening? and also is there a way i can prevent the one from eating all of the food without separating them and putting them into different cages? Also my sister did not clean the cage and didn't give them a litter box so the one that is losing her fur has matted fur around her hind legs and stomach area but the top of her and her front legs are fine what can i do about that? hopefully you can help me out thank you!

    I think the best thing is to just keep doing it and make it a positive experience. Brush them gently and give them lots of treats after. The more you do these behaviours the more your bunny will get used to them. I'm sure mine don't like getting their nails trimmed but they all tolerate it now (no more squirming) and they know they get lots of treats after!!!! :)

    So I have a question.. Is it possible for rabbits to be scared of the dark? Weird I know, my little girl is an inside bunny and at night if I don't leave the light on all night she makes a heck of a noise and doesn't settle down, seems on edge but as soon as you turn a light on she calms right down and is a happy little girl again. I had to go and buy her a night light so I could leave that on for her. She loves it. I checked on her before I went to bed (she has her own room) and she was sitting by the night light and sleeping. I wouldn't have though they could get scared of the dark seeing as they are nocturnal but I'm 95% sure she is!

    • @Mallapuff

    • @BudgetBunny
      @BudgetBunny  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mallory Kelsall Awwww I've never heard of this! How long have you had her for? If she is a fairly new addition to your family then it could be because she is still nervous about her surroundings and needs some time to adjust. Rabbits are prey animals and are naturally nervous. They also do better in pairs or small groups (male-female, spayed and neutered of course) where they feel they have one another to protect their 'warren'. x

      Kamryn Brown Hi! I don't know if you're still having this problem but I just saw a vet about this! My bunny is having the same issue. If you need advice feel free to message me and I'll tell you what my vet told me :)

  • @BudgetBunny
    @BudgetBunny  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awwwwwwwww I'm glad that she's doing okay. It should be fine to put her on an alfalfa based pellet like Martin Mills Original Rabbit Food and mix in some alfalfa with her regular hay. It is higher in calcium so you wouldn't want to make it long term but it would be much higher in calories which is why pregnant, nursing or young rabbits should be on it. When they're sick it is good to get those extra calories in there! Hope that helps :)

    I got Joy in a shop, they told me she was a she. Okay, today she went to the vet for desex opp. Rang at four o'clock to find Joy is actually Joseph, ah so it was forty nine dollars cheaper and now HE is on a heat pillow wrapped in a blanket, but I only zapped it for a quarter of the time they said, didn't want it too hot. Now he is dozing peacefully on all the tranx the vet gave him. Will be moving soon so I think the new house will be easier to rabbit proof. Great page you have. Thanks.

    Hi my local rabbit shelter has told me to brush my rabbit once every 2 months because they said its bad to do it every week

    • @BudgetBunny
      @BudgetBunny  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your rabbit has short hair you don't need to use a brush on them every week, you can finger comb instead but you should be doing a good health check for any mats, fleas, dandruff, bald spots etc. If they're shedding it's quite important to brush once or twice daily. Extra hair and excessive grooming can easily lead to blockages which can kill your rabbit. x

Your male will need to be neutered as well. :) Also lions are super adorable but their mane will probably require some extra brushing to make sure it stays in top form!

    I wish my buns would hold still long enough to groom them. Only time they will sit still to let me pet or brush them is if they are eating a really yummy treat like raisins. Outside of that I try to pet or brush and they scoot off somewhere. They are still young though, 8 mos old. If one of them actually sat in my lap like that though and wanted me to groom it, I'd be in heaven.

      I know this is a late reply... but for rabbits like that you want to put them up high someplace where they would not jump off or move around like she did with Rocky in the video. It is good to do this when doing their nails as well. The rabbit will not run off if it is some place high.

      Kayla THOMAS Rocky shed like this all of the time, it seemed never ending! We would finally get through one moult and then have what felt like a week or two before the next began!
