      you need to bond more

    • @pumpkin19790
      @pumpkin19790 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Also depends on the rabbit, some bunnies dont ever let anyone pick them up even when they are extremely close and well bonded with the owner and most rabbits like to stay with all feet on the ground :)

      y female rabbit goes crazy and start to growl when picked up. in her defense she lost all her babies to a rattle snake not too long ago

      Check mary cotter video on howcast. Her method which kinda like football hold is the only method that work for my rabbit. If I hold my rabbit like the one in this video i will be full of scratches. It is much easier to pick the rabbit while they are younger.

      A good bit of it has to be with the breeder, my rabbit normally lets me pick her up and even though I got her 13 hours ago (yesterday night) I'm already able to pick her up even after her being in her hutch after about 11.75 hours, the breeder would often pick her up and of her litter as a baby she was the easiest to pick up, she was even used as the model for the picture of one rabbit.. it just depends on if they were handled when they were younger or in the shelter or it

      Before she put her hand in their face she made sure to pet it's back so it knew she wasn't going to harm them, and that's why she was able to put her hand by their faces.

    Yeah right. That might work with a baby, but it's completely different when you have a 6 pound, 11 month old, rescue bunny who hasn't ever been properly handled when younger, or shown the love that she deserves. Plus, she has HUGE feet, and HUGE nails.. When she kicks, it isn't fun.

      Karen Zebracki My Sky is a Himalayan/Californian possibly mixed with something else... Or maybe she's a Himalayan, Californian mix.. I don't know. She has the normal markings, but they're weird. I could explain it, but there is no point. xD Anyway, I've had her for about four weeks now.. so about a month.. She is the sweetest thing ever. She comes up to me as well, but handling her is a completely different story. I started giving her food to her on my lap... Every night, I pour her a fourth of a cup of food, then sit in her pen with her food on my lap. When she tried to take it while standing on the floor, I would move the bowl so she would have to jump up on my lap in order to get the food. When she jumps up on my lap, I would say "lap". As she sits and eats, I pet her. Later, when she was more comfortable, I would hug her and kiss her head. If she got scared and jumped off, I don't force her to stay. I let her get down, but she cant have the food unless she's on my lap. ;) This got her to get used to being close to me. I just thought I would tell you this just in case you want to try, because it helped me out. Now, sometimes, I can pick her up without her panicking and kicking.. Before I started doing this, she would jump away if I just put my hands on her sides. Also, I don't carry her like this lady does... I do it differently. I don't know how to explain it, but she's calm when I hold her this way. Hold her in a way that you have a free hand to cover her eyes. It will make her much more calm. I hope I could help a little bit... Probably not though. Everybun is different. Just hold her in different ways until you find a way that she likes. That's pretty much what I did.

      Allie Kat Yes, I've had good success covering the bun's eyes and speaking reassuringly before gently reaching around and firmly holding their bottom (as best i can), and quickly but smoothly holding them close to my chest.
      Periodically, I've been covering their eyes while petting them so they'll get used to it. It seems to calm them down right away. The coolest thing is when they totally relax and it feels like they're melting into the floor! The softest puddle ever.

      Allie Kat lol true. I had trouble holding my bunny.. for 2 months trying this method. Finally realised the easiest way for my 7 month old bunny was to have him face me and scoop him up from his butt directly onto my chest while supporting his front legs.

    For me I have to be sneaky because I only lift my rabbit to put her back in her cage area. She has learned I only try to grab her when I need her in the cage area and runs and hops when I try to catch her as if it's a game. My rabbit does the whole kicking and scratching thing when I first get my hand on her but as soon as I lift her onto my shoulder(her favorite spot , if I hold her on my chest she climbs up to look over my shoulder) she perks her head and ears up looking around and it's the same look she gets when I pop her cage open to let her free in the morning.

    Good video, but to really help us, you need to pick up a full-grown rabbit that doesn’t want to get picked up and starts strongly kicking its back legs! Most of us who search for videos like this do so because we have adult rabbits who are very scared of being handled and fight like crazy to get away! And rabbits can be incredibly strong! THIS scenario and type of rabbit is what we need help with!

    By now you're six weeks in, and it's still early. A lot of rabbits will never like being picked up, and all of them will get antsy sooner or later and want down. I would try to avoid picking her up at all for a while. Make sure the cage is arranged so she can come and go as she pleases when the door is open. Let her come to you and work on getting to know her on the floor. Also, look up "The Language of Lagomorphs" online. It helped me a lot. And don't forget to spay her!

    My rabbit was very large and he absolutely hated being picked up. We tried everything to make him calm and relaxed, but we had to reduce to using a towel. We would put the towel on his back (not over his head) and we would gently put our hand under his upper part of his belly (where the front paws are) and then supporting his back. Just that we had a towel to protect us from being scratched. But he eventually stopped scratching using that technique.

      It's more of like a burrito how I do it. It's not very safe to be wrapping them like a taco. They could jump out or often people make the mistake of holding them like a baby on their backs.

  • @charmed6057
    @charmed6057 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That can severely hurt them. I wouldn't say they love to be picked up by the ears, and a rabbit that is fearful or in pain may not immediately show it. Reading a rabbits emotions isn't like reading a dogs or a cats, you have to keep that in mind. Not to mention, what if your rabbit spooks one day. The result, distrust, fear, and a potential broken neck or back.

    This always looks so much easier with small rabbits... My rabbit is about the size of a small cat and he hates being picked up. We're trying to work out the best way that makes him comfortable, but he's so large and strong that if he gets frightened he can injure us, and I'm worried that he'll injure himself.

    In the video, it’s mentioned to put your rabbit down when it’s calm to reinforce positive behaviour. My rabbit is calm when I’m carrying him and walking. But once he saw his hutch? He started struggling and scratching. So what should I do in this instance? Don’t put him down and continue to carry him? Whenever he starts to struggle, I would quickly kneel and put him down as I’m afraid that he will leaps off from my arms when I’m standing and that it could hurt himself as it’s quite high.

    So many people saying how they used to pick the rabbits up (by the neck or ears and so on) ..seriously?! How did it ever cross your mind that it was the right way to pick them up? Did you want a pet or somthing just to throw around? People should do their research before buying an animal!!! Its not fair on the poor things :(

      You might not believe it but there are lots of animal zookeepers that pick them up by the neck.I guess that's where people saw it and just assumed because the person is allowed to have and sell them that they'd know what they're doing.(which is apparently not often the case)

    I'm 12 and I've had a bunny for 7 years ( it died yesterday 😔). The only time I used to pick him up was when we needed to put him in his cage cause it was raining or when he went somewhere he's not meant to go. Because he did always kick so if I picked him up and he kicked I put him straight down because they can break their back. But then I noticed how the vets pick him up, the way it is shown in the video, and I picked him up that way and he loved it ! Also I always stroked him on his head that was his favourite place to be stroked!

    I do it exactly like this but my rabbit kicks too much. He's used to me and even comes up to cuddle but would only let me handle him for a few seconds before kicking away. I understand that some rabbits aren't fond of being held, but maybe it's just my rabbit's personality, idk. He's a very happy and nice rabbit, he never runs away, he likes to play, cuddle, and do or sorts of things, it's just when it comes to being handled. I rarely try to pick him up, is there a way I could stop him from kicking so much?

  • @TaoEmenka
    @TaoEmenka 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    You need to gain control of the legs. I have found, if I'm having a particularly hard time, I use a blanket, but I don't cover him completely with it. My rabbit used to blame the blanket for her being picked up though, she had fun destroying it (but honestly I left it there so she could play with it as she felt).

    So since "tranceing" a rabbit is very stressful and emotionally scarring, how do you trim the rabbits nails if they need to be trimmed? do you just recommend a vet to sedate them and clip them?

    • @Uglydevil55
      @Uglydevil55 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should go check out some howcast vids they have great info on rabbits
      And theres a vid to teach u how to clip the nail

    • @DieHardThunderhead96
      @DieHardThunderhead96 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah, just grab the ears and/or scruff, grab the hindquarters, rock them onto their back, and you can either cradle them in your arms with their head under your arms so their eyes are covered, or you can have them lay on your lap and hold their ears with your knees and trim their nails that way. Flipping them over isn't stressful at all and all rabbits should learn how to be flipped over without going all spazy.

    • @FloatOn23
      @FloatOn23 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've done a lot of research on this subject and flipping them onto their back is extremely stressful to the rabbit. the reason all rabbits "behave" when you flip them onto their back is because its their natural defense mechanism to freeze up and appear "dead" to a predator. it can cause a lot of health issues because the rabbits heart is beating faster than normal, which can set off their sympathetic nervous system (flight or fight response). It can also cause heart problems and can lower their immune system due to stress and if done often enough can make your rabbit more anxious than normal.

    • @DieHardThunderhead96
      @DieHardThunderhead96 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not if you do it all the time. A lot of people think it's super stressful when really, if that rabbit knows you and if you handle it enough, that rabbit will let you do anything with it. Personal experience.

    • @FloatOn23
      @FloatOn23 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the more you do that the more it will stress your rabbit out, no amount of domestication will get rid of that instinct programmed in its brain, its like trying to get a rabbit not to like carrots :)

    Lol my bunnies like to attack blankets and towels too. I've learned a few methods since that comment. If I want to hold and pet them I grab them and quickly place them on my chest facing me. If I want to clip their nails I do what they do in this video /watch?v=83UrYfAD6dA&feature=related because it doesn't allow them to kick and if they do it won't hurt their back.
    The trick is to do it quickly so they won't have time to freak out.

    • @LoveABun
      @LoveABun 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zimt Bun PICKING UP A RABBIT BY THE SCRUFF OF THE NECK IS PHYSICALLY VERY PAINFUL TO THEM BECAUSE THIS AREA CONTAINS LOTS OF NERVE ENDINGS! NEVER DO IT!!!
      TWO OTHER REASONS TO NEVER DO IT:
      1-THE SKIN OF A RABBIT IS EXTREMELY THIN AND FRAGILE. YOU CAN ACTUALLY TEAR THE SKIN BY STRETCHING IT TOO MUCH!
      2-RABBIT PREDATORS LIKE HAWKS, EAGLES, OWLS AND FALCONS CATCH THEM BY GRABBING ONTO THE SCRUFF OF THE NECK WITH THEIR BEAKS, LIFT THEM UP OFF THE GROUND AND FLY AWAY WITH THEM. THEREFORE WHEN YOU PICK A RABBIT UP BY THE SCRUFF OF THE HECK, THEY THINK YOU SRE A PREDATOR AND ARE TRYING TO KILL THEM! IT IS HIGHLY TRAUMATIZING TO THEM!
      You need to educate your father and tell him he is very wrong to recommend this method for picking up a rabbit. It a WILL cause great harm!

    What type of bunny was the male?

  • @Anonyomus
    @Anonyomus 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I want to share the case of my bunny here.
    Funny that unlike the person in the video said about putting your hand in front of the bunny will intimidate it. My bunny especially likes the petting and scratching of its nose, it's forehead, under the jaw, palms etc. and won't bite. It'd nibble, if you cover his eyes or head with your palm, but scratching, petting and even rubbing your face against his is very fine. I found that rubbing your nose against his is like bonding with him, he likes it and clearly aknowledges that we're in the same fauna and I care about him. He even pushes his nose against mine, when doing this. Nobody else except one person beside me has been allowed or dared to do this to him., others have been too afraid to get bitten. In my opinion, he'd do no harm if trying to "nose" or "snout" with him, if you just relax and poke him with your nose. You'd both like that.
    He communicates with people by using it's nose by poking your feet with it, if he wants your attention, something to eat etc. He also moderately understand talking. For example if I deny him for going to somewhere or doing something prohibited, he'll stop doing whatever he's doing(except when he wants attention, then he's just fucking around on purpose). He also understands his name, when called. And these are things I never expected a bunny to learn, when I was going have him with me.
    He was very much trouble the first 1-2 years with us, because he destroyed everything where he could sink his teeth in, but after I moved away on my own and took my bunny buddy with me, he's been very relaxed and well-behaving. He hasn't destroyed any wires, cables, sofa, furniture overall or house whatsoever after I moved away with him. Only thing he has destroyed a bit is an old carpet, but who cares. He basically eats only the food I give to him. The former home was very stressful and small place to live in for everybody and so was for the bunny. He senses the tension between his companions and wasn't comfortable with it. It wasn't pleasant place for anybody and he responded to that by misbehaving. Good thing is that now it's all behind and we could restart our lives somewhere else in peace.
    Oh, his name is Harmi btw. It's Finnish and it means 'trouble' or 'misfortune', but the name comes from the color of his fur, which is silvery, brownish and grey(depending on the season). And in finnish grey is 'harmaa', from which the name originates. Well, as I said, he lived up to his second meaning of his name for the first 2 years. He's mixed breed and weights around 5-5,5kg. Due to his size and profile, I believe there's some flemish giant in him.
    I haven't had to pick him up if he was going to do something I don't like. And he rarely does anything prohibited. He doesn't like to be picked up, because he didn't go through any socialization phase with humans, so I rarely try to catch him. His experience of humans were very limited and not very positive. We bought him with my ex from the pet store, where he lived for the first of his year in a small cage. He was claustrophobic for a while, but now he's okay. I know that supporting the pet store business or buying your pet from there is sometimes unethical, but we wanted this bunny and wanted to rescue him from there. After him, the pet store didn't take bunnies in their cages for sale anymore. Because children harassed and disturbed him and other bunnies there. So he developed very stubborn personality and he's quite careful with unfamiliar people. But after all he's very curious about everybody, other animals and places and likes to go discover new faces and places. Funny, considering about his first experience with humans and life overall. Maybe we did something right with my ex to restore his trust on people. First time meeting he'll avoid you, on the second time he'll jump right to you and poke you. He'll test how you react to his communication attempts.
    He has been in my life for 3 years(he turns 4 in the Fall) and is very fun company to live with. Can't think of life without him. We're bros and I won't give him away at any cost. I'd consider us a roommates, from which I'm the only one paying for the rent.
    Right now he's chilling beside my feet while I'm writing this. And I scratch his nose and head as he passes by or when I sit on the floor to talk with him. He has his own room to be in, he can hop around freely in the apartment and his cage door is always open. Only his room door is closed for the night or when I'm away. I'm considering to find him a female partner, but I don't know if he needs that at all.
    Sorry for the long text. That's the short story of my life with my bunny. If you have an idea of getting a bunny, I recommend it very much, if you have enough room and patience to deal with them. Harmi was nerve-cracking at his worst, but at his best which is present, he's easier to take care of than a cat. Bunnies are funny and you should try to get know them.

      He's sterilized. He was unbearable, when he still had his balls. I do love baby bunnies, but having 3-5 small bunnies jumping around would be tough to take care of for one person with low income. :D

    What should I do when I pick up one of my rabbits he becomes very aggressive, I try to avoid handling him however I need to in order to put him outside. I don't have the type of run that I can sit it, it has and enclosed top as I also have a cat. I'm hoping once he is neutered he will become less aggressive but it's extremely difficult
