I used to live in Kanazawa and did the ride to Shirakawa and back via Io-zen a few times. I love the area and am always happy to see it again. I'll be sure to watch your other videos!
Thank you for sharing! I'm planning a ride from Shizuoka, where I live to Kanazawa for next year and this was the leg I was most worried about finding a good route. This will really help me a lot!
I'm so happy to hear! That sounds like a fun trip! I rode from Shirakawago to Kanazawa again this past summer, and used a more direct route - here's the video for that one so you can see if you prefer that way! th-cam.com/video/cJsZUndxz8M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=pWv_oT3X_b37WH3l
I have a dream to ride this route by my own bike, so I was happy to watch your video! Thank you for sharing strava link and information about Hakusan road (which is useful, to properly plan my own route). Wish you all the best!
Wow I would love to stay in Shirakawago for a couple days. Just seems so peaceful. It's like experiencing a snippet of historic Japan, and those views (espically 11:19)!
Really neat video! I am trying to plan a 1 week trip and this might make a really nice segment. Aside from the usual Shimanami Kaido are there other routes that you looked at or know of which you can recommend?
Thanks so much for watching! The Shimanami Kaido is quite far from us in Ishikawa, so if you wanted to ride that route you would probably want to plan the full week in that area. My husband Zeb wrote a blog about how he plans cycling routes in Japan so maybe that would be helpful: www.ramblingramsbothams.com/blog/planning-bikepacking-or-bike-touring-in-japan There are so many great roads here so you can't really go wrong! I hope you have a great trip 😄
Thanks! I wear a GoPro with a chest mount (I have the GoPro 9), and Zeb flies a DJI Mavic Mini drone. At the beginning I was using a Sony ZV-E10 vlogcam. Sometimes I use my iphone too. Hope that helps!
great trip guys, I'm planning to cycle japan soon, but I've stumbled on a video of two bikers that got attacked by a bear...any advice about it? did you hear about bears syories in the area? thx
Thanks so much! Great question - I would say that bears are always in the back of my mind in rural areas here, but never so much that I've changed my plans because of them. Usually in the Hokuriku area where I live the risk is more on hikers, and cycling is not really as risky for bear encounters. However if you're concerned I would go to a local bike shop or outdoor shop when you arrive and ask them about bear spray. Depending on where you're riding it might be common to carry with you while cycling (maybe Hokkaido?), but I don't know anyone who rides with it here. Sometimes I will talk to myself or sing if I'm on a remote or forested road here, just to let any potential wildlife, including boars or deer, know I'm coming and not spook them 😄
Thanks! We stayed at Guesthouse KEI - we actually stayed there again for a second time this past summer too. If you want to see its in this video: th-cam.com/video/cJsZUndxz8M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6GwyN_Pv9cI6qQky I hope you have a great time, it's such a beautiful area!
It was really quiet! Yes, this was earlier than the tour busses. I think it was 6:30 or 7am, so not many people were up yet and there weren't any day trip visitors yet.
Not interested in the city's, so this type of video appeals to me much more. All the others seem to be about eating all the time. Thanks for the video. It would be much more polite to say inexpensive stead of cheap in Japan I would think.
How fun! I had Specialized Trigger Pro 38mm on my bike at the time, which were comfortable on the gravel sections but a bit overkill on the road. I've since switched to 28mm tires which is likely the most narrow I would go - either would be fine, but I would recommend tubeless regardless (especially with all the little pebbly stuff on the roads) just to prevent flats as much as possible. Hope it's a great trip!
Thank you! I think the mountain we crossed before descending into the Shogawa river valley is 赤祖父山 (Akasofuyama) in Toyama prefecture. It's 1033m at the top but I don't know how close we were to the top.
good question, we have little cycling devices/computers on our handlebars (these are made by Garmin, Wahoo, companies like that). They have a small map display kind of like what a car gps shows, and we follow that like we would in a car. We make the routes on a computer and then download them to the cycling computer to use on rides
I just got a new gravel bike recently, it has super noisy pawls like on the video... Don't the manufacturers consider the noise pollution? I guess the upside is that people know you are coming ;)
haha good question, I feel like loud freehubs are "in fashion". Some of the more expensive wheels have the loudest freehubs, but I guess thats because they have more pawl engagement points. I've heard that shimano hubs can be on the quieter side? but yeah, not ideal for peaceful early morning rides haha - you're right, it does let people know you're there!
@@AnniewhereAndEverywhere Marketing must have realised that since the bikes are "riding advertisements", why not catch people's attention. It's smart, but oh so evil...
Really Fantastic ❤ Can you recommend any bicycle please, i want to buy bicycle for long ride within japan, can you help me? are you live in japan? And also i want to join your company for road trip in japan 😂😂
Thank you for watching! Hmm, there are so many great bikes and options that it's hard to recommend one - the best thing is to go to your local bike shop and tell them the kinds of terrain you want to ride on, distance, and your budget, and they can help! I currently ride a cervelo espero with 28mm tires. When I recorded this video I think I was still riding my santa cruz stigmata with 38mm gravel tires. Both are good bikes, and there are so many good options out there! Yes I'm living in Japan right now and really enjoying it :) Hope you have a nice ride!

Thats cool to hear, thanks for watching! I haven't actually tried getting there via Io yet, maybe I'll give that route a try once spring rolls around!
Very nice scenic route. I have plan to ride from Kyoto to Shirakawago hopefully in autumn.
Thanks so much - and that sounds like it will be beautiful! Hope your ride goes well!
thanks for the info... heading to Japan in a weeks time
Thanks Michael, I hope you have a fantastic time!

Peaceful is the perfect word! I was definitely in awe 😍
I love japan❤
Stumbled across your video, loved the ride you both did and really nice video. Inspired me to get on bike today, no excuses.
Wow that is awesome to hear! Hope you had a great ride! Thanks so much for watching
Fine. You have doon great trip.
thank you so much!
interesting journey ❤

Awesome video! If I may ask, where did you stay in Shirakawago? I want to explore it early in the morning just like what you did. Thank you!

Looks so quiet and peaceful when you were there. Was your walk early in the morning before tour busses came in?

Thanks for watching! Yeah by "cheap" I just mean inexpensive, nothing to do with quality. I guess that could be taken the wrong way
We are planning a similar trip. What width tires did you use / recommend? Thanks for the advice!
