Update on the kitchen build in our French farmhouse

I am finally sharing an update on our kitchen build process. Although I would have loved to share the final result with you we have not finished the build yet... This means we will need to be using make shift solutions for a few more weeks as our first guests in the cottage are coming in a week so we will need to move out of the cottage and won't have that kitchen anymore :)
We will continue our building works and I hope to be back soon!

I make wild garlic butter, just gently blend with some butter, I also put a little lime in sometimes. It's so lovely with fresh bread and home made soup. I love all the flowers blooming everywhere so you can harvest for the house.

Sure looks like it's still chilly out there, same here on the east coast of US...lots of rain, wind and some pretty cold nights! That's ok, next month we will be complaining bout the heat and humidity, we have no real Spring anymore...we go straight into Summer....LOL!

i had no idea and that is too risky for me. i may have a dust ball in my eye while simultaneously picking and end up picking the lily of the valley. im going to stick with garlic bulb.

I would love to be able to help you and Olav, Marloes! I am a cook from Canada. I believe I mentioned this before. Got some great ideas for French Acadian dishes from Nouvelle Ecosse and Nouveau Brunswick. They are simple but hearty and delicious. I don't need money or fame. Just a place to pitch a tent and a spot for a motorbike.
I really want to see that part of France and Geneva. Hope to see you next year when I take my holidays.

First..Happy Birthday...think last year you said your bday was May 7th? Mine is May 1st...so cheers! 🍻 from Wisconsin. Love the look of your home and buildings...the warmth of the wood, the strength of the stone, a dab of french ornate, a tad Ikea...so french country. Olav was outnumbered this week...but that's ok...everyone needs a visit from a distant friend now and then. Enjoy.

The plant you show at 7.03 is Solomon's Seal NOT Lily of the Valley but it is still poisonous!

We call it Muguet in French which my Google translates as lily of the valley?
It's definitely Solomon's Seal. If you Google the flower it's completely different. Lily of the valley flowers look like old fashioned maids bonnets, plus lily of the valley has a beautiful scent, Solomon's Seal doesn't.

Can you tell us what was behind the vines over future rental cottage. It looks like a dove cot. I have tried to catch up by watching dozens of your videos. Wish they were numbered. Love your content and sweet soft delivery. You are a truly amazing woman!💕
Yes it is a dove cot the previous owners had put in but it has never attracted any doves! We did decide to leave it there though to honor the work the previous owners put in creating it!

Amazing how you stay calm with the double stressors of guests and construction! Could you please say something about the benefits of eating only in-season vegetables?
Thanks! I want to buy local as much as I can. That is only possible if you eat in season. Alternatively you can preserve other vegetables or freeze them if you want to eat them year round. But I like having the special in season things, it give structure to the year and something to look forward to! It anchors our daily habits and lives I feel. Some say it’s better for your health as it should contain the vitamins and nutrients your body needs that time of the year. I do however also eat avocados year round so I am not rigid about it.

I think it translates as battle …. I mean no offence as I know the Dutch 🇳🇱 are brilliant at languages it’s the word slag which means battle I think but in uk slang it has a funnier meaning that’s all

Lily of the Valley??? Yes, the leaf looks almost the same as the Wild Garlic leaf. But I think that you are in fact comparing the leaf of the Solomon's Seal plant. Which is also poisonous of course, but much easier to distinguish from the Ail des Ours than the leaf of the Lily of the Valley.
And our local bio veggies producer has also already zucchini for sale.

@@FrenchCountryLife when I lived in France the forest floor was covered in Muguet which we called Lily of the valley… gave each other vast bundles of it on May 1… your birthday.., I lived near Morhange.

Though Solomon's seal also displays white flowers, they are longer in shape. Also, its oval, green, untoothed leaves grow alternately up the stem unlike lily-of-the-valley's which grow in pairs.” :)

Is the little cottage just to the right of the main house occupied? For some reason I thought you were living in that. Good to have these extra kitchens. Your new kitchen is going to be very nice. So the wild garlic, you use the leaves instead of a bulb?
We are living in the right part of the main house while we finish the kitchen build. The cabin is detached from the house and we rent it as an airbnb year round.
You can eat both the leaves and the flowers
@@FrenchCountryLife I just read about the wild garlic. You can eat all of the parts, including stems and bulbs. When in doubt if its wild garlic or Lilly of the valley, the article says to rub the leaves and give it a smell, you will be able to tell. I’m using an iPhone 14 Pro but when it comes to autofocus when zooming in my previous iPhones (12pro and 8) were much better! With the 14 I have to manually tap a setting to make the camera zoom which doesn’t really work for me. My iPhone 12 Pro focuses on an object automatically when it thinks I want to zoom in. I still use that camera to film brocante shopping or make detail shots when filming homes. Highly recommend!
