Mark Rober has discovered the formula for going viral on youtube. His crazy science experiments have become some of the most popular uploads on the platform. To the point where right now he averages an insane 37 million views per video.
We need to talk about something that is often overlooked, which takes us on to step 1 - Mark has a system for viral ideas
The second thing is Mark’s ideas are optimized for new viewers - His videos can be shown to someone who has never seen his channel before, and still be interesting . They have wide appeal.
There’s still a crucial step missing though, which takes us on to step 3 - Mark uses perfect packaging
Mark knows that all his effort up to this point would be useless if he doesn’t get the thumbnail and title right, how you package your video is arguably the most important thing.

Your anlysis is on point. I would only add that Mark uses a "homemade" feeling in his builds, in the edits, in the shooting and in the titles. Hi budget for every video is huge, but he avoids making it feel too polished and instead aims for a spontaneous feeling
The formula also has to appeal to children and families with brightly colored shock-info-tainment.
They perceive this content as intriguing, safe, and educational.
The only people who ever mention his name or channel to me are parents with grade school children.
Ninja increased his $$$$ by going PG rated once he and his wife saw the opportunity per his own admission in an interview.

I’m fine that mark plays the formula, because he really puts in the work for his videos and teaches people in the process.
You know what it is about Mark?!? He has such childlike joy in his creations. He is creative, really smart and talented. And he has a camera presence that not everyone can say that they have. He has tons of fun and does it all with humility. I am fascinated with the combination of science and fun on his channel, just as we all are.
After watching this video and learning so many amazing youtube tricks, I realize how well you played me like a fiddle because I clicked on this video for all the reasons you listed. You had a great readable thumbnail with 3 elements that popped out, a concise title with an extreme element (genius), and the video itself was structured well and entertaining throughout. Well done.

Great lesson here; thanks. So I jumped over to Mark's channel and watched a few. They are almost impossible to click off of until the end. And then I just have to watch the next one!
In Marks never ending quest to be the "fun uncle", he figured out how to break TH-cam. And then he body-slammed his nephew into a quicksand hot tub.
Really interesting video - plenty of food for thought. Great tips for big creators and small ones alike! Thanks for the in-depth info.
One thing I would add is that Mark emphasises the emotional reaction of his participants. You hear them go "woahhhh" so many times that it really triggers the crowd emotion. Humans have the innate ability to empathise with others emotions so to repeatedly show the emotional reaction makes you FEEL those emotions.
Look at his Shark videos and he does the same thing. I don't for a second believe that he is as scared of sharks as he makes out since he is a seasoned diver.
Mark uses the emotional responses from within the video to build up the viewer with those same emotions before showing the best view of the thing that triggered that emotion. It means you are already primed to feel that emotion in its entirety and then it is unleashed on you

I’ve taken Mark Rober’s creative engineering course and his creative process for coming up with build ideas is definitely focused on what will make a good video. To help with the wholesomeness/relatability of his videos, he usually tries to make build for stuff he cares about/have a lot of meaning to him. Using the video you used as an example, he wasn’t just making a big explosion for the sake of a big explosion, but he was making a big explosion for someone he cared about.
Absolute gold here man. I can’t even express how grateful I am for this video.

I have literally been on youtube since the beginning and I have never heard of this guy, never had a recommendation for his videos and never seen a reference about him anywhere. So...if this guy is getting that many likes for that many years, how does youtube never recommend his content to me? I know, but do you?
so Google gives your profile interests and uses these interests to serve you ads and videos. so I'm guessing you don't have the interests that matches with his channel. it's like someone who is into cars won't get makeup videos
For me i always like to delete my video history every season. so my TH-cam recommendation Will choose different path with starting point of the channel that i subscribed so the algorithms Will choose video for my mood in that season but still acknowleged my interest. and always finding fresh creator.

I'd like a breakdown on how things go viral outside of youtube, because I think that's a MASSIVE factor to virality. Having a heartwarming surprise line/catchy headline or a quick and interesting gif that spreads on imgur, facebook, instagram, etc creates a lot of cross website chatter that ends up feeding into the algorithm.
The irony of me sitting here, watching an entire video about "How to get people to watch your entire video". And then my compulsory need to write this comment. I'm brainwashed. Might as well hit the Like button too.
