- Filmed on Sunday, July 23, 2023, I drive around Englewood and West Englewood in the South Side of Chicago to see what's going on.
Englewood was named for Englewood, New Jersey.
Early residents of Englewood likely would have been rail workers, many working at the Union Stock Yard.
In the 1960's and 70's the Englewood community was largely defined by the Englewood Shopping Center, a large pedestrian mall.
In the late 70s and early 80s, the mall lost its major anchor tenants.
In 1999, the city began an aggressive buyout and relocation program for remaining mall tenants, and Kennedy-King College was moved to the former site of Englewood Shopping Center in an effort to revitalize the area.
Englewood reached its peak population in 1960 with over 97,000 residents within the 3 square miles of the neighborhood.
Since then, the population of the neighborhood has been dropping dramatically. Today, 24,000 people call Englewood home.
Englewood has been known as "Chicago's Murder Capital", with more homicides being committed there than any other neighborhood in Chicago.
Gunshots are heard almost daily in Englewood and the neighborhood averages 70 homicides per year.
Englewood has one of the highest crime rates in Chicago, with 111.7 violent crimes reported per 1,000 citizens.
Only 51% of residents report that they feel safe in their neighborhood "most or all of the time."
In Englewood, 35% of housing units are vacant, and 45% of the residents are living below the poverty line.
The Englewood community has overwhelmingly supported the Democratic Party in the past three presidential elections. In 2016, 97.11% of votes were cast for Hillary Clinton. In 2020, 93.96% of votes were cast for Joe Biden.

Englewood has been cleaned up so much that I hardly recognize it.
Much better than other drive videos of Chicago, great stuff. Love the angles!
lovin' you baby
You're doing good work.
20:53 That "Nicholson Technology Academy" shown at 60th and Peoria is the site of my former elementary school, William G. Beale Elementary School which I attended Kindergarten through 8th Grade, graduating in 1975. The building is essentially the same, with some updates and additions, but during my time there, that building was known as the "new building", which housed the K-5th grade classrooms as well as the only cafeteria on campus. The original school building, located across the schoolyard closer to 61st and Sangamon was an ancient 4 story structure which we referred to as the "old building". It was officially known as the Wm. G. Beale Upper Grade Center", housing grades 6-8. It was in the UGC that we began having homerooms for each class in each grade and going to different classrooms and teachers for various subjects as opposed to spending the entire day in one class with one teacher covering various subjects. The old building was torn down some years after I graduated, and from this, I can assume that the Beale School that I knew is long gone.
Chicago has some of the best looking ghettos. Love the old buildings.
You gotta hand it to Chicago, I expected far more decaying buildings. Seems like they have bulldozed a significant amount. I just assume every empty lot formerly hosted an abandoned building.
Nice homes. Clean. Barely any traffic.
That’s true, hardly any traffic in the busiest city in the world. Hmmm…

Plenty of those in white neighborhoods too...only neighborhoods you don't see all that stuff is rich white neighborhoods. Learn who the real enemy is.
They are in white communities too. They are in every city in america. 😕
Most of the parts of Englewood you showed were already black in the 1960’s. You never touched the white Englewood that was totally destroyed by the blacks!
Yeah but it seems like he's driving so fast through those streets.
