Nope, I like the puzzles and it helps make it unique among survival horror games in the copy and paste Resident Evil era, as opposed to something like Cold Fear in the post RE4 era. I do believe that considering the hype and pedigree of the developers (Mikami and Hideki Kamiya to boot), it isn't wrong (especially from a modern perspective looking back) to have expected more of the game.
+VegetaHitsGirls The truth is in my experience the general consensus has usually been DC 1 is a very good game while DC2 was a bit of a letdown for going all action. DC 1 received top reviews back when it came out and I bought it right away. Having been in love with the new survival horror genre perfected by Res Evil 1 and 2, the game had it all but with dinosaurs this time. DC 1 is an all time great in the genre. DC 2 was a huge letdown for those expecting more of the same. Can't believe they wasted the sequel making it an action game.
I disagree with this review. Dino Crisis 1 did more for the survival horror genre than many other games. The puzzles were varied rather than stale, and they actually were hard rather than stupidly easy like in Resident Evil. Those things you complain about, you'll blowing them out of proportion. And some of those things don't even make sense at all. Dino Crisis 2 was fun, but it was an action game, and that thing couldn't possibly called "Survival Horror".
+Dreadjaws i actually didn't find the puzzles hard, just tedious. trim them puzzles and gimme a decent story and you've got an incredible game because i was way into the resource management and combat.
the puzzles weren't that hard, they were just super tedious. i rolled my eyes every single time i got a new key card. just like great, another freaking key card to keep track of. Riveting. the took the resident evil formula and focused on the worst parts instead of the best.
@Tidder T Puzzles can still be fun, but as he and others are saying, that requires them to not be as tedious as taking the screws out of a Samsung phone..and let me tell you as a phone technician, that shit is tedious as all balls.
@Tidder T Okay, keep not listening and being the same kinda person who’d play a call of duty game who would be stubborn as hell and not listen to anyone but himself.
Dino Crisis 1 received top reviews, Sold 2.4 million copies, is my favorite game of all time. I wish that the survival horror come back in this generation.
I prefer the first movie over the sequel. It was more frightening that we didn't know the name of the alien species (xenomorphs) until the sequel brought it up.
And now I'm sad because I just remembered that Capcom Vancouver, the studio that made the Dead Rising sequels; pitched a Dino Crisis reboot just as DR4 started coming apart at the seems but the higher ups in Japan said no.
There's one thing you did not notice in Dino Crisis 1. They're mercenaries, not a police rescue team. They are not there to save the world. They're there to rescue the VIP (Dr. Kirk) and leave. That simple. No dilemmas. No kindness, just a reward to receive. One impression I had while playing, is that they were Umbrella mercenaries, like those in RE3. If the characters become deeper or interpretive, the spirit of "mercenaries" would probably be lost, since Regina is a charismatic protagonist. In my opinion, if you could change the protagonist for Sylvester Stallone, the game would be exactly the same game, which makes your proposal a success, a group of "expendables", only with a less charismatic character. Nothing to say about Dino Crisis 2. And I wanted to know more about Regina, too.
i flatly disagree with DC1. it was more akin to Silent Hills formula; it used what you can't see, music and sound effects to cleverly induce fear with the odd jump scare and that big arse T-Rex... DC2 was little more than fun for me which is strange considering i hadn't even reached 10 years old by the time i finished the secong game. i agree about Regina, if they make a new DC she HAS to be lead. She's up there with Lara 'Pixel-tits' Croft in hottest ps1 babes (though i never rated Lara that much). i hope to god you hate DC3. im going to watch that vid now :)
a difference of opinion does not make the entire review bad, whats wrong with you. The video quality is excellent, and furthermore, how many reviews even exist for dc, let alone the series. So please be more respectful before you make ridiculous remarks like that just to look cool or fit in
First one of Dereks reviews I completely disagree with. (although fair since these are opinions). Dino Crisis 1 was fantastic. I love survival horror genre and DC1 is more like Res Evil and Silent Hill but with Dinos. it had plenty of memorable moments and great tension that is built throughout the story. The puzzle solving is typical Res Evil style fare which is great for this style of game. Nothing crazy like you mention. Dino Crisis 2 to me was a huge letdown. I was excited to get back to some more real survival horror but it turned out to be a mindless action game. I gave it a few good long plays but the absolute letdown of it not being a survival horror game ruined it for me. DC1 is a legit all time great survival horror game up there with Res Evil 1-3 (and CV), Silent Hill, etc. Capcom knew the genre so well and it showed.
@@557deadpool yes, every single game should be just as fun on easy baby mode as it is in hard mode. Ok, idiot. If you think DC is better than RE1 and 2, you've got those nostalgia goggles strapped on way too tight kid.
The appearance of puzzles in Dino Crisis actually balance to your decisions in the game. Picking Rick's choices often are "thinking" your out and choosing Gail's are often "fighting" your way out. It's not something you learn until you play the game more than once, but the way the game plays out is decided by the player.
I finished Dino Crisis 2 exactly 12 times .... first 6 to get all the unlockables ... and after some times 6 times again from scratch to get it all again.
DC 2 is one of my favorite games ever. It’s just fun to play which is what a video game should be. Plus the story is batshit insane. I love it it’s hilarious
I'd love to see a "Is it Really That Bad?" for Dino Crisis 3. Would make a sweet return for the series, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Make it happen, Derek!
I feel Derek's best videos are one's on the more obscure games or at least the more forgotten titles. Sorry man, but you'll always be a Happy Video Game Nerd!
Sorry dude. I love Dino Crisis. And I've finished it two weeks ago. Again. Can't fault it for having puzzles. The suspense is there. Maybe not as much action, but I don't take issue.
+Jammet Leopard Agreed DC isnt supposed to have tons of action, its a Res Evil style REAL survival horror game. The second game is mindless action and ruined the series imo. They should have made it more of the same.
+Jammet Leopard i don't mind puzzles but for me they got in the way of the suspense and resource management that made the first half of DC1 so amazing. the generator thing was just such a bummer
+Stop Skeletons From Fighting You mean the mini puzzle where you turn some cogs to get the colors in order? I dunno, that was kinda ... not special in a good or bad way. Anyway, I'm re-playing RE 2 these days. Much fun :).
What impressed me in Dino Crisis 2 is the use of motion capturing on in-game engine despite the limited use of the hardware, and it shows they fully utilized the system and put it in a good use. It just seems they were moving naturally. You don't see much PS1 games doing that especially not Capcom games while they still had characters with stiff movements.
Opinions... I just love the first, that requires brains and builds suspense, and hate the second, a fucking nonsense of collecting combos and more combos with infinite shooting. Opinions.
Why would anyone playing a game called Dino Crisis want to be sat doing a puzzle where your literally just looking at a screen with some letters and numbers upon it? Or walking back and forth between the same area over and over again typing in 4 digit key codes, puzzle games are fine when there done well, the portal games are great
Now imagine a properly remastered Dino Crisis! A modernized take on the solidly made survival horror game. And with some extra features put in there. Some things I would personally want: * A deeper story, with much more content to go through - Maybe include more researchers, and the possible ability to save more people. * More weapons to choose from, such as a more powerful handgun (like a Desert Eagle or a large caliber revolver) and maybe add a 9mm submachine gun (like an MP5 or something similar) * The ability to choose between classic fixed cameras, or a more modern style third person / first person perspective * The addition of a very challenging mode, where ammo and other resources are very limited, and / or stronger enemies. * Also, for fun.. Adding some multiplayer features like a team based PvP mode where you can pick between playing as a survivor or a Dino. A deathmatch style game that utilized the accessible areas through the facility, where every floor acted as a separate map (1st and 2nd floors would count as one)
Love your work as always, Derek! Been watching you for years and it's awesome to see you keep growing. I didn't think you could get better, but you manage to impress me with every episode!
I can't believe your review! I thought that the puzzles made the game far more enjoyable as there was more to just shooting dinosaurs. The idea of the plugs also impressed me as ammo supply was limited and that made it into more of a survival horror. I found this to be quite a challenging game when it first came out and I'm still playing it today and I'm still enjoying it as I did all those years ago. Ok, the second game was more of a 'shoot em up' and had more of a storyline but the first one was more challenging! You notice people who play challenging games will throw their controllers on the floor and get angry but they will pick it back up the next day or in a few hours time and attempt to complete the game. The only problem would be the lack of dinosaurs in this game.
I just remembered something, the ending to your gameplay of the first one, with you doing the random generator parts can be changed by you yourself, you can also go up to another part of the facility and collect the full piece instead.

I like Dino Crisis. I miss Regina too. ... on a completely... well it's kind of a related note, did you all know there is a game that is Resident Evil with vampires? Yes... that exists... and it's in Vegas! Well it takes place in a casino, but it could be in Vegas for all I know. It's been a while. Anyway, it's called Countdown Vampires and I would like to see a review on it. I just hope finding a copy of it isn't a chore.
I remember playing this game when it came out, I was ten years old and a huge fan of the resident evil games. At first I loved Dino Crisis but ended up quitting when I got to the fingerprint puzzle. However I remember constantly going back just so I could experience the good gameplay. Thank god for the sequel that game was a blast, for someone my age then.
Speaking of ONIMUSIA and games capcom doesn't seem to care about. This year I beat all four of them for the first time in like ten years. Man those first three are still really really good. That fourth one "dawn of dreams" is sadly not good at all.
I wonder if you've reviewed Nightmare Creatures. The game has tons of problems and hasn't aged well...but damned if I don't still like playing it now and then.
I feel ya dude,no one remembers that one and often got me chose between that and Soul Reaver in those times. Love the style in Nightmare Creatures, And I have never seen a review for that one.
Great review Derek! I have the same feelings to the games as well seeing 2 as far superior but still loving the first due to its ideas and what it wants to be. Hopefully the series will shine again
I actually found Dino Crisis 2's story to be captivating ! There's a sense of mystery and sorrow as you progress through the scenario. I don't see why people consider that game to be dumb... It's an action game alright. Not too difficult, except for some parts in hard mode (T-Rex tank chase, arrgh...), but it is one of the best "Jurassic Park like" games to have ever been released. As a fan, I can only appreciate.
Love your videos man!! been watching since splatterhouse, and i gotta say i pretty much agree with everything you say on all the games you review. Love you dont ever stop man!!
"Roll that action montage!" *Seoul X BTS ad plays* err.. I don't remember these pretty boys being in Dino Crisis 2.. or was there a BTS ver.. oh.. PS: I was half asleep atm.
6:18 you only have to build the initializer and stabilizer if you side with rick when they discuss how to get the generator working, if you choose gail's option then you just head over to b3's storage area and pick up already completed ones except the path you have to traverse is full of the big grey dinos that fuck you up as opposed to the much weaker and fewer raptors you find on your way to the places where you build them. So one part is faster but more risky and one part is much slower but also much more safe in case you are on your first playthrough and are short on healing items, ammo and/or didn't activate all supply boxes.
DC1 is for people who are fans of the original resident evil games, the ones that actually were survival horror, with a little puzzle solving from silent hill mixed in (I know, not the same creators, just saying). DC2 is like the Resident Evil 5 of the dino crisis games, more action packed but still great story.
The reality of Dino Crisis is very simple. Like Onimusha, each installment sold less and less. DC1 sold 2.4m, DC2 1.2, and DC3 less than 1m (probably something like sub-500k considering it only released on Xbox and was critically panned), while development costs grew. While at the same time Capcom had Onimusha and Devil May Cry which also sold more per iteration. The best way to re-introduce the series and to gauge its popularity would be making both games available on Steam. After that, possibly adding Dino Crisis characters, enemies and levels to Mercenaries in a mainline Resident Evil game.
* nods with approval * I am down with a "Is it really that bad?" with Dino Crisis 3! Keep it going Derek. I watch your work with a certain delay but it's certainly on my aim =)
Loved this video! First time I saw a gamer saying that DC1 is boring and 2 is fun as hell! Tired of those hipster stating how clever the first was, and how cliché was the sequel.
Errr... i wouldnt say im a hipster . i think the first one is better but its just personal taste overall . It doesn mean that everyone is a hipster because they like the first one better . Its just like Zelda 2 on the nes . Some love it , some hate it.
Yeah. I just disagree when someone says the game is shit because there is not many puzzles or whatever. Zelda 2 is okay, just cryptic... but so Dark Souls
I credit me watching my friend play this for like, an hour, me marathonning Jurassic Park 2 (It was the only VHS I had..), and a shit load of dinosaur toys to the reason why I'm going to university now for Paleontology.. Damn dinosaurs are cool..
Dino Crisis 2 is excellent. I loved going Melee with the male character. That's when you know a Tank-controlled game is so well done. When you can melee no problem. (Ehem...Code Veronica... Ehem...)
typical american perspective: the more you shoot the better it is! I enjoy using my mind a little bit more, i prefer dino crisis 1, and overall it has more tension for the same reason, either you use your mind or you die, for the lack of space and hope , plus there are few dinosaurs who are deadly and hunting, you learn to know them more and consequently fear them more
I was a small little kid and was very much scared to play DS1, but DS2 had SOOOO MUCH immersion, just wow. Gonna play it no my new 32 inch 144 hz Samsung display with 2080 Gigabyte Gaming OC and ryzen 2600x :P

i like how different these two games are despite being a series, back then i prefer dino crisis 2's gameplay because i can spend my time shooting dinosaurs without worrying about my resources, now i like the first one's puzzle survival style gameplay, it makes the game harder and more scary
it might also be a bit weird that I played 1 after 2 and absolutely loved it and its puzzles... despite barrely understanding a single word of english at the time
I got too scared to play Dino Crisis when I was a kid. As soon as the first dinosaur appeared I quit the game and returned it to the video store the next day.
Am I the only one who actually LIKES Dino Crisis 1 and has played through it like 15 times?

Yes... that exists... and it's in Vegas! Well it takes place in a casino, but it could be in Vegas for all I know. It's been a while.
Anyway, it's called Countdown Vampires and I would like to see a review on it.
I just hope finding a copy of it isn't a chore.
Goddamn love that game like all the capcom games
I remember playing this game when it came out, I was ten years old and a huge fan of the resident evil games. At first I loved Dino Crisis but ended up quitting when I got to the fingerprint puzzle. However I remember constantly going back just so I could experience the good gameplay. Thank god for the sequel that game was a blast, for someone my age then.
DC 2 was soooooo dope!!! I love the opening how they establish the action and that soundtrack really got me going!
I'm so glad Uncle Derek grew out of his angry dark and depressed phase, and is the Happy version of Derek again.
Speaking of ONIMUSIA and games capcom doesn't seem to care about. This year I beat all four of them for the first time in like ten years. Man those first three are still really really good. That fourth one "dawn of dreams" is sadly not good at all.
Ah man, the puzzles and presentation are what I love about Resident Evil-style games! I loved the first DC!
I love your videos. How am I just now finding out about this channel? Great job!
Good to see your reviews again
Tfw all the puzzles make dino crisis seem actually super fun and interesting
I love the intro, keep up the great work! :)
Great video Derek!!
The "action montage" for the first one killed me.
"Roll that action montage!"
*Seoul X BTS ad plays*
err.. I don't remember these pretty boys being in Dino Crisis 2.. or was there a BTS ver.. oh..
PS: I was half asleep atm.
I spy a Criterion copy of House on your shelf! Love it!
I haven't watched the video yet, but I just love Dino Crisis 2. Action Packed Survival Horror. Really Awesome.
* nods with approval *
I am down with a "Is it really that bad?" with Dino Crisis 3! Keep it going Derek. I watch your work with a certain delay but it's certainly on my aim =)
I liked them both and want Regina back :'(
sweet House blu-ray in the background there, great insane movie.
Also great video as always btw
I love the atmosphere of the first Dino Crisis
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
I kinda want a "But remember the mission shirt"
Holy shit, I had that coin robot in the background as a kid! Awesome review!
I did too!!! Loved that frickin thing!:p
+Ponaru I did as well. Loved that thing.
That's the problem. Dino Crisis is the big problem the codes, everything!
Oh man I don't know how many times I watched the intro video to Dino Crisis 2... and the music, sweet nostalgia
The save room music at the end gave me chills...
I credit me watching my friend play this for like, an hour, me marathonning Jurassic Park 2 (It was the only VHS I had..), and a shit load of dinosaur toys to the reason why I'm going to university now for Paleontology.. Damn dinosaurs are cool..
Speaking of Jurassic World, is it weird to say you kinda look like Chris Pratt?
+The Spoony Bard we are both roguishly handsome and totally ripped
More PS1 games please !!!, I love all of them
Dude your videos are genius.
Aw I thoroughly enjoyed Dino Crisis
Dino Crisis feels like a game that should have come out for the PS2 and GameCube instead. I think the PS1's limitations hindered that game.
I just recently re-picked this up. Good review~!
Derek : *explains in details why he didn't like most of the puzzles and has previously made videos about Survival Horrors where he liked the puzzles*
Some Butthurt DC1 fans : hE oNlY lOvEs ShOoTiNg
At least neither Dino Crisis 1 or 2 have zombie dinosaurs in spaaaaaaaaaaaaace!
Oddly though I'd think it would be interesting to see Dino Crisis remade
Dude does not know what he's talking about dc1 is a cult classic
Love both games for their own aesthetics. One is more a thinking game, the other action. Both are great in my book. And they have DINOSAURS!!!😀
Dino Crisis should have a reboot, and I want to know more about Regina too. Love that redhead woman! ;)
Honestly, I loved this game as much as resident evil 2, really good game!.
Oh shit IIRTB Dino Crisis 3 confirmed
i like how different these two games are despite being a series, back then i prefer dino crisis 2's gameplay because i can spend my time shooting dinosaurs without worrying about my resources, now i like the first one's puzzle survival style gameplay, it makes the game harder and more scary
Thumbs up if you like the pixel look of the video games in the late 90s
Dino Crisis 2 is one of my favorite games of all time great action game.
Regina vs Jill Valentine. Who would win?
Just played for the first time and absolutely amazed by the graphica and camera angles
I loved Dino Crisis 2. it's one of my favorite games on ps1.
it might also be a bit weird that I played 1 after 2 and absolutely loved it and its puzzles... despite barrely understanding a single word of english at the time
I got too scared to play Dino Crisis when I was a kid. As soon as the first dinosaur appeared I quit the game and returned it to the video store the next day.
