  • It's essential that your free hub body is in good condition in order to get maximum efficiency out of your drivetrain! If your springs and pawls are clogged with dirt, grit or heavy grease, the life expectancy and condition of your free hub will deteriorate rapidly. So here's how to strip, clean, lubricate and reassemble your free hub body!

As Doddy says in this video, you don't need to do a full hub service in order to make sure that your free hub is running in good order. You just need to clean the springs and pawls with a small amount of de-greaser before re-lubricating with some thin chain lube. You can then re-assemble your hub and you should instantly hear and feel the difference!

My first experience with the inside of a freehub was like this; I was riding my brand new Trek Remedy that came with a dork disk. That disk came loose and annyoed the crap of me so I decided to remove it on-trail. I did'nt have a knife or a cutter, so I used a sharp rock to try to cut it off. Suddenly the whole dork disc came loose, and so did the freehub with all its pawls and spring, littered on the muddy, sandy trail. I had never imagined to see such delicate parts on my bike! Surely I thought i was fcked! Some of the pawl springs was also strecthed. By some mircaly using a tiny stick to guide the springs and pawls back(yes i found all the springs and pawls), I was able to reassemble it and the hub worked for the next 3-4 years i had the bike!

    • @gmbn
      @gmbn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

A lot of grease will make it a bit quieter yes, but the trade off is that more grease will hold on to more dirt. On the other hand, not enough lubricant will promote excessive wear (and a very loud noise!). There's a happy middle ground as demonstrated here :)

Please bear with me, its a rather long piece, sorry about that. l just started to write and then it happened.
Thanks for the videos, l enjoy them immensely, honestly other than cleaning the bike and a few very idiot proof repairs l have hardly ever done anything for a number of reasons.
One of them is that where l currently am, the bike shops are very accommodating, l can go in for a tune up anytime and its free. This l realise is too good to be true.
The other reason is that l do not have the right tools at the moment, which brings me to another point, what would you recommend for a home mechanic to be able to do just about everything which a normal person can do. By normal l mean someone who in his entire life has never had to do anything manual other than maybe a bit of forced gardening as a child and nothing worse and since l work in a very untechnical environment, l have very little chance of learning.
The last reason for me is this, your videos seem to be aimed at someone who already has some experience with this sort of thing. Try to remember that a bike is a very special tool for some of us and very expensive mine is a hardtail so in some ways its basic but l cannot imagine how l would feel if l muck it up. So l hope when you make videos you could have two versions the long one where you show each step so that people like me can see it all. l have written before about this where l said basically that too much is editted out. l know others are seasoned home mechanics so they do not need the step by step guide some of need. For instance, on this video you never mentioned the tools needed for the job, something l remember used to be part of the old videos.
So for the reasons stated above l hardly ever tinker with my bike. However, next month hopefully, l will be away for a few months with bike in tow. l am thinking l may leave the bike and get a new one upon my return. Where l am going there are very few bike shops and any small job is very expensive so therefore l will definitely need to be able to do most of my own servicing when l am there and should l decide to leave my bike. So you can imagine how much l value your videos.l realise some jobs are better suited to pros but for those where a well prepared home mechanic, with the right tools and information, l want to do those by myself or at least have the option to. However, please try to make them as simple as possible and do not cut out anything and have two versions to cater for all your fans. l am even thinking of downloading a few of them to take with me, thats how much l think they are useful.
Talking of travelling, l am aware of bike bags or boxes, but which is best l will need to travel across two continents and about three stops before l get home, so l am rather concerned about the state in which my beloved steed will be when l get home. l am flying but l will need to change planes along the way. So can you recommend a box or number based on price, strength and availability. My bike is a 2014 hardtail and l think it is a medium. l may need to use this box or case more because l foresee a lot of travel at home and in the future involving this or other bikes, so please do note that. Have seen the videos about boxes verses specialist cases and the issue of soft and hard cases but l am still not sure which is the way forward so your opinion in this would be highly valued as l suppose you lot do a fair bit of travelling so should be well versed in that sort of thing.
One last question, are there any courses like weekend or evenings for bike maintenance you know about? l would be willing to join, l am unfortunately not in the UK but it is good to know all the same and do the big Taiwanese brands offer any, l have a Merida. l mean a residential sort of thing over a week or a few months enabling one to service, assemble bikes. l sometimes think of eventually running my own bike shop but l am always worry about that aspect, sellling could be easy but the maintenance and upgrade section could be another issue. ln as far as l know where l am from there are no locally available courses.
Anyway l have said a lot l hope you can take the time to answer the questions raised. Sorry once again for the length, l tend to ramble.

      Hi ddx ddx,
Okay, so this really is all the steps involved in this process with this hub! This video moves too fast for anyone to carry out these steps alongside it! If you're using this as a work along then watch a tiny bit, hit the pause button, carry out those steps and continue. This applies to all of our mechanical videos. Nothing essential in the process is skipped out, glossed over or removed in the editing process.
Our mechanicals are aimed to be followed by everybody at a comprehensive beginner level. Logically, a comprehensive beginner mechanic would not go straight in at servicing a freehub body. Start with a simpler subject such as fitment/removal of various parts, safety checks or indexing gears from our mechanical playlist: gmbn.eu/mtbmaintenance
Start small, work up to bigger jobs, if you enjoy it begin to get more tools for different jobs. If you're ever unsure or think you've gone wrong then have a professional cast an eye over it. There are a huge variety of maintenance courses all over the world, so best check in your local area with an online search or an ask around local bike shops.
As for travelling we use bike bags, soft shell with a rigid skeleton interior. We understand that this isn't for everybody due to the expense involved in them, but as we travel frequently with our bikes they are considered an investment. A good sturdy box reinforced with an entire roll of gorilla tape will do you well, provided you include a good amount of protective packing on the inside. Check out this video from the archives for how to pack your bike in a box gmbn.eu/flyyourbike. Hope that covers everything!

Although there was small amounts of sticky grease inside the springs and pawls that would slow the movement down, you're right in saying there wasn't as much dirt as should be expected in there. We'd suggest doing this every 3-4 months depending on ride time. Not super regularly!

awesome video. is there a video about replacing bearings? is it hard to take them out and put them back? do I need a special tool? I want to replace bearings in Mustang Pro 4 Boost 148 and my local shop told me it will take 2 weeks. I don't want to wait and want to try to do it myself. any advice? how hard is it? I am pretty good with my hands. I did 50 hour service on my rear shock couple days ago.

Thanks for this tutorial... but, as you know, there are a lot of differents hubs. I need a tutorial of a sram/btwin one that have the freewheel not so free (i'm italian, i explain as i can: it tents to rotate with the wheel when i stop move pedals, so it tent to drive the chain and the chainrings). Probably it is only very dirty and sticky but i don't understand how to open it. It is a sealed bearing B'Twin hub with a 10 speed body for Sram X7, original part of a RockRider 720s my2016, probably. Thanks, anyway :-)

"simple and easy", well for this specific hub. what about the hubs that need the unicorn 15mm hex wrench in order to remove the freehub? or such freehubs are suposed to not be service? cheers

Can you take out the inserts? I can with mine (not poc vpd's), and then put the fabric part in the washing machine (40 degrees, easy washing without spin, no dryer). Shouldn't harm them more than rain and mud.
