I've never attempted to clean and re-grease my headset before, but my bike was creaking so terribly and my bike shop recommended I do it myself since they had a long wait time. I first watched your video in it's entirety, then I went back to each step watched several times each. I committed to doing it yesterday as I waited for my new rim from the shop. It was so much simpler than I imagined and it got rid of the creaking 100%! Now I know it isn't that tough of a job and will do it more regularly! Thanks for the clear concise instruction.
I just want to say that I LOVE YOU GUYS! I watch your videos endlessly. And the great thing about it is that I have last years Genius 730 aluminum, so a lot of what you are demonstrating is very similar to my bike. Love it! Keep up the good work and I will buy my bobble beanie soon.
thanks for the great tip gmbn i have watched this a couple of times now but never really had the balls to go and do it but decided 'what the heck' and went for it, my headset is now working like new. keep the video's coming
Hi GMBN. You are my favourite channel. I am struggling in learning to whip and have watched your videos on this but I would appreciate an in depth video on how to whip with a lot of slow mo so I can study your body movement as you ride. Cheers guys 👍👍
You can take the seal out and clean/re-grease the bearings too they will last much longer. I know they are relatively cheap but why not spend the money on something else. :) Depending on the riding conditions I service them every two-three months. The top one used to be OK but the lower one can get dirty quickly no matter if it's sealed.
Great video indeed. I suggest to use of front mudguard. Those can be bough for cheap on the net or you can make them yourself. Not needing of some big ones, even small ones are great for guarding the bottom bearing. :)
could you please do video about bearings in pivots? how to keep about them, and how to know when it´s time to change them. thank you very much. you are doing a great work with your videos.
Thanks a lot for this video, that really give me an idea specially my bike is alloy version of your bike.i wish that you can give us a good video as well on how to overhaul the bottom bracket for press fit and non press fit bb.
One small detail that I would suggest is to open the bearing itself, wash out the existing grease and dirt, to later apply fresh grease. We need to remember that the bearing itself is the rotating one and not the washers and everything else I live in a very dry area and applying grease outside the bearing itself will only attract dirt
***** Hey Renzo, Yeah I take your point on board, but you have to be very careful removing the seal as it easy to damage them. Plus for the most part standard bearings are cheap to replace. Thanks for your comment, Marc
I have the large Scott the same as the video but when I take the stem off the forks won't drop through. Do I need to remove the star looking cap inside the forks when the headset cap screws into?
Thanks for this very nice video! I used it to service my own headset, but unfortunately I didn't manage to remove the bearings from the frame. All other parts came out easy, but not the bearings. They were really stuck. Not like in the video where you pop them out so easily. Do you have a tip? I don't want to go berserk on them with a hammer...
Chris Hession Hey Chris, Yes we may do that edit at some point but Its a very similar process the only difference is you have to remove the top crown which often has the direct mount stem connected to it. Thanks for your comment, Marc
Дмитрий Карпич Thanks Im glad you liked the edit. Im not sure to be honest, I guess such a flexible tool and don't have to keep picking up another one. cheers Marc
Can mtb disk break cleaner be used as a degreaser even if it doesn't say it can, and If it says it can be used on the pads is it still safe for the rotor? Thanks in advance
I'm having some troubles. I've cleaned both bearings, opened and regreased them, but it felt creaky afterwards. I did apply some grease to the outer sides of the bearring could this cause? Grease below and on top seems to make sense to me. If i put it on the side then bearing itself can turn inside the frame, i think the innerparts of the bearing should turn? Are there places where grease does more wrong than good?
HELP!! Is it possible to to replace a caged bearing with a sealed bearing??? (My bike is a 2012 Cube ltd race hardtail.) I recently serviced my caged bearings for the first time and they were so rusty they fell apart. I'm cant find replacements or know of where i could get replacements online. Any help much appreciated as I'm unable to ride with a couple of weeks! :(
My headsets creaking so defo need to replace my bearings but the bottom bearing is stuck and will not fall out. Any advice on removing a stuck cartridge bearing? Got a Canyon Nerve AL 2015 and its the same A style headset.
When I drop front end of my bike I can hear knocking sound from headset. Checked everything and no broken or weared parts. Maybe tightening headset a bit more to remove knocking?
That might help, but be careful not to tighten too much. Try standing over your bike, turning the wheels to the side, holding the front brake and rocking the bike front and back. If you feel some movement, play or knocking, then it's the headset and you should tighten it a bit more.
Global Mountain Bike Network Tried and no movement but still that knocking sound like headset is not tightened enough. Will try tightening, but if that doesn't help any ideas on what it might be?
I attempted to grease my headset because there was a slight nocking noise every time I braked hard so I took it apart and done it but it seems when I turn the handle bars it doesn't feel smooth
This could either be because you tightened the headset top bolt a bit too much and need to loosen that or it could mean that something in the headset is in the wrong order, facing the wrong direction, or a bearing or race is worn. I would start by loosening the top bolt and stem bolts, and then re-tighten the headset top bolt so that it feels smooth if you turn the forks, but so that there isn't any play in the headset. Then once it feels good you can tighten the stem. The order you tighten the headset bolt and stem bolts matters as well so make sure to do the headset bolt first. Hopefully this helps!
Julian Drennan Bikes really aren't very demanding on grease. Any lithium based will work fine, if you ride in the wet get a pot of marine grease and you're set pretty much for the next 20 years.
+Kaleb Carr Hey Kaleb, Perhaps you need another headset spacer under your stem or above if you don't want to change your handlebar position? Failing that you will have to get some new bearings i'm afraid? Thanks Marc
+Global Mountain Bike Network Thanks man, i fixed the headset issue but it turns out that I have slightly damaged the forks, they are suntour M3030 with only 75mm of travel and I have just been riding to hard for those forks.
kingsed91 Hey, If you follow the tips on the edit you should be able to figure out the problem? The only thing I can think of is you need some more spacers because the steerer tube is close to the top of the stem? Therefore it can not tighten enough? Thanks for your comment, Marc
kingsed91 Hopefully you loosened the stem clamping bolts first, the top screw is only to bring things together before the stem then holds it all. Otherwise what he said

The headset should only allow the forks and handlebars to rotate. If you are able to move the forks and handlebars forward and backwards inside the headset then that would be "play". It basically just means movement in a direction that it shouldn't be moving.
mac16a Morning , The point of it is! You have a nice clean headset that works perfectly. I know if I ride xc all Winter and don't clean and re grease my headset it would be in a sorry state, and probably need replacing. Thanks for your comment, Marc
Couple of questions: What's the tool called that you used to apply the grease? Can you did a video on how to make seating more comfortable. I just bought a 2015 Giant Reign 1 and have found the seat uncomfortable. I've come for a recreational bike with a large wife seat... So it's been hard trying to transfer to a harder skinnier seat. Any recommendations on a saddle?
I would service it after multiple rides that you know the bike got fairly dirty, or do it at least before and after the riding season. Or if you start to feel some play in your headset you definitely want to open it up and take a look, since you may need to replace bearings in that case.
If your using a power washer, you might be pulling grease with the beam of water which in theory could make it louder. Otherwise it's probably coincidental.
Everything functions properly th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of TH-cam. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. I want to check my headset to ensure it's greased properly.
Now, I just need some confidence to do it...LOL.
Great videos, given me so much more confidence. (68 year old with a Scott Scale 735 Hardtail)
Also good to check that the "play" in your headset isn't actually your front brake mount or rotor as I've had that happen to me
McInnes747 Right! mostly if you have center lock rotors, they have some normal play
That's good to hear! I was very worried about my new bike...

What means "there is a play between"?

Guys, clean your bottom tube before you do this job....
Hate to be the knob to point this out but you shouldn't clamp a dropper.
I'm sure you're aware of that though.
