OP is not the asshole, they are just ignorant. There are a lot of factors and variables to consider why this was the outcome for OP. His mindset and perspective of the situation is unique to him. Religion, background, upbringing, status, income, education, (age of parent and their generation) values, etc… all can really contribute to said standpoint. When one becomes a parent… where do we gain the experience to know how to navigate parenthood? - a huge percentage is mimicked from how we were raised as a children. As a mom, a lot of my parenting decisions come from how I was raised… and educating myself and gaining advice. Maybe this is how OP parents were raised?
