The numbers were always going to be close but the look is so much better (my opinion) and will blend perfectly with the look of the 770's. The big thing for me is the extra height and extra stopping power that will result.
Have had the 2019s for 6 months after never ever having brand new clubs. Good to see not much difference as will not be upgrading for a few more years yet that is for sure! They do look very nice, but love the look of the 2019s and they certainly don't look dated. Nice review!
I play the 2019 with MMT shafts and currently a 13.8 hcp. I love them. I have noticed the lack of spin, but I’ve also never had a problem holding a green due to the height. I have had a few experiences with random hot shots, but they are rare and the forgiveness is so great, I Can except that. They do get a bad rap for feel, but if you pure them, they feel great! If you don’t they feel pretty bad, but I use it as an indicator of my ball striking. Great job James!
I have the 2017 P790s and I'll be upgrading to the 2021 version asap. Assuming I hit them better than my existing clubs. Gotta get my hands on the new ones first.
'21 P790 is the greatest golf shop club of all time. It hits fantastic off the mat and looks great on Trackman. Now that I have them home, I'm adjusting my swing to the P790 which is OK because the results are there.
enjoyed the comparison today! For me the big thing that most needed to improve were sound, feel, and dispersion from the original to now. The originals were known for having hot spots. the second gen seemed to have smoothed things out. Seems like tTM has polished and refined this 3rd generation to a degree that more people than ever would consider using them!
interesting thing is, after checking them out, i chose the 2019 model over the 2021. At address, theres a clear difference, taylormade reverted back to the 2017 looks, thicker topline with more offset. To my eye, the difference is quite apparent, so it shocked me when some testers said the 2021 looked better...
They sure are pretty! I like the chrome look - I almost would have preferred the opposite of what they did - racing stripe to be 'brushed' and the rest to be chrome. But who wouldn't love to sport those in their bag? Heart Heart Heart.
I'd say the biggest difference is that "Lateral" number. While the distance never needed to be improved upon (everyone knows they go long), it looks as though the theme of this year across all brands and clubs is accuracy. If this club is aimed at a large variety of players (Most likely those who need more length and accuracy....) then I would say they have improved. TXG found that the biggest issue before was the random hot shot that popped off the face a little too much. They determined that this year's model doesn't do that. All-in-all, is looks like they were aiming for consistency and hit the mark. I'll definitely be considering these clubs.
Really glad to see that there not above trying to improve still. The performance having zero difference between them is encouraging speaking from a golfers perspective
i got fit a few weeks ago from golf galaxy in Arizona.. finally coming in the post tomorrow im excited .. bad thing about getting fit a few weeks ago i forgot how they hit already lol.. it was between these and the Ping 525's i hit both well but like these just a touch more
Just got myself fitted in to a 2019 P790 in the murdered out all black heads and shafts. Trying to get under the 20 handicap, and enjoying the challenge, and some of the forgiveness!! Glad I got a good deal, and that the new ones aren’t that much better 😊
I tried the 1st generation P790 and for some unexplained reason, I just could them to perform so I probably won't bother trying the new versions. But I agree that cosmetically the new ones are a big improvement.
Awesome awesome awesome head to head James. I’m gaming the 2019 P790 irons and love them but I have to say that the 2021 version look 🔥🔥 and I know it would be pointless changing them but look just look at the new version 😍😍 who doesn’t want new shiny things
James ,, you nailed it by saying ,, "why do I make golf so difficult for myself " ( inferring that using the 790's makes things markedly easier ) After all is said and done isn't that the bottom line, getting as much enjoyment as possible from the game ? Ive been using my 2019's for 2 years now and they are without a doubt the best irons I have ever played. I am just waiting for my 2021's to arrive ( Sept 8 th !!!! ) The only reason Im making the move is the look,, I thing the 2021's are stunning ( not that the 2019's aren't awesome looking as well ) I play off an 8 handicap and I have tried everything and finally I said the same thing , " why do I make golf difficult for myself ? Great review !!
great video james. I use 1985 Burner bubble irons and need a change. If I were to change, I would probably get the 2019 P790's since they are cheaper now. I am retired and don't have loads of money to spend on clubs.
I use the 2019 P790s and they are absolutely brilliant. Lots of distance and huge forgiveness. I think I’m probably going to be in the minority when I say that I also prefer the aesthetics.
Just been fitted for a new set of irons. as a high handicapper, just got back into the game after 10 years off with a bad back. I still have a bad back but what the point of going for a walk if you can't hit something. Anyway I was recommended to try the Callaway Apex, Cobra LTDX, Titles T200 and the P790 's. The P790's are not the longest club, but certainly gave me more control, better dispersion and look and sound better, they will be in my bag sometime in the next 6 weeks.
Hello from 🇨🇦 James. I have the 2017's fit in a KBS ctaper 120 stiff and I love them. I play to a 0 cap and have been as low as a +2 with them. I would love to see that 2017/2021 comparison. All that being said the idea of a combo set now with 770's since the look change seems ideal depending on that gap loft difference at the transition clubs. Your thoughts?
James, please do a comparison with those Takomo 101,s there's so much talk about those clubs! That vid you did with them is on there website good work mate 👍
Golf clubs very much seem comparable to cars and mobile phones. The jump in performance from a “budget” version to a “premium” version is noticeable. The jump in performance from an “old spec” to a “new spec” of the same type is marginal. If you want to spend your money on getting the newer version of any of those things is fine to do if you can afford it. What do you think looks better though; blacked out p790s or the copper headed cobra forged tec?
Very nice looking clubs… Such mixed reviews on these so far though. So may people saying thinner top line and higher ball flights and more spin. Great review though James, always enjoy your content.
Why not get fitted for a set of these or another more forgiving iron and then alternate play with them and your current irons over several rounds and see if you score any differently.
I had an extensive test of the 2017 model and was getting better performance out of my 20year old x 300 FCI model (that I don’t think we’re ever released) and I shifted to i500s. These, however, look great and have to be worth a back to back fitting.
I second this request. These are supposed to be for all handicaps and as a player of a similar handicap to Foxy, I’d be curious to hear what he thinks of them.
@@GregKael I can assure you the p790’s are all, I bought mine at the end of 2018 as a 22 hcp, by the the end of 2019 at best I was a 16-17 hcp, then enter COVID in 2020-2021 so a big pause in golf but at the moment im off 14 hcp but hand on heart im playing closer to a 10 hcp. Also my brother in law is a 6 hcp and he plays the 2019 version after having a go with mine and he has dropped from a 9 hcp from the beginning of this year. So with that said I think most hcp’s are covered, love mine.
I didn't like the feel of the 2019 version and ended up getting fitted for Ping i500s. Your review seems to confirm my sense of the "feel" of the 2019 version.
But if I'm an improving golfer (29 to 21 HCP in 6 months) who's using M2 irons, these look like a perfect step up to clubs that will last me, basically, forever (until they "wear out"), once I get into playing consistently in the 80s?
in theory, yeah. go get fitted look at your numbers and most importantly make sure you like them. I've been using stock clubs since I started a 6 years ago and finally got a proper fit. it's night and day. highly recommend a proper fitting. love the look of these excited to hit them myself!
Just traded in my 2019's and bought a set of 2021's. Can't wait to get them on the course. They are so much better looking and every review I've watched suggests that there is less of a drop off on mishits with the newer model. What more could you want?
I have the 2017 version is it worth an upgrade to the 2021 model? A comparison would be great especially for us guys that can’t afford new irons every other year.
Hi James, thanks for another great video. Always enjoying all the way from Japan. I'm currently using the 1st gen P790s and wondering if I should renew them so yeah, I'd like to see a comparison with those too. One thing I can say is that I definitely like the new design much better. (^^
My issue is with any of these they say they are for all golfers but what high handicapper will pay this rather than going to sports direct and buying a box of clubs? Yes they may be for sub 15h players - I’ll stick with my Adam’s!
Hi James, great video. I have the 2017 irons and would love you to put them head to head against the 2021 version. I'm playing off 15.9 and have a project to hit 80 or below. This year l have moved from a handicap 21.5. with the 2017. Will the 21 version take me all the way? Cheers
I currently use 13 year old cleveland ta6s which do the job but i was recently recommended the new p790's but do I save money and just get the 2019 version?
Just a thought, everyone who brought brand new clubs, just before COVID, surely wouldn’t have been able to use them that much, so those clubs would by now, still be pretty much as new, so would there be a rush to swap new clubs for new clubs, which as the numbers prove are the same, this goes for any brand
I recently went for an iron set fitting and am faced with a big dilemma between the p790s and t300s the numbers came out identical but the spin rate was a tad higher with the p790s. Any help/advise on which ones to go for would be much appreciated 👌
What's your opinion, I'm a 24 handicap but it's been coming down steady for the last month. Currently using a second hand set of G400, would these be a good idea?
Annoyed with my 2019 790 8 iron having a damaged face (manufacturing fault). Waiting for a replacement but looks like it will be a long wait for a 2019 one, if TM has just brought out a 2021 model.
I play the 19 version and they are super nice. They are the best clubs I have ever played. Nice review James. Wish I hit a 6 200!
The numbers were always going to be close but the look is so much better (my opinion) and will blend perfectly with the look of the 770's. The big thing for me is the extra height and extra stopping power that will result.
Couldn't agree more.... I just got the 770 cause they look so amazing
Only been a couple of months since I got my mizuno jpx 921 forged can't see any iron beating them there spot on
Loved the test, not surprised at all by the results. Thanks
They don’t look “better” - they look NEWER - Only difference - honest review James

Completely agree! Got my P790’s in January and they’re incredible! Was gutted to see the release of these, but so glad they’re not much different!
I’ll be sticking with my original p790 for now, but will be changing to p770 at some point.
I have a fitting for the 2021 p.790s I’m a few hours. Couldn’t be more excited
Enjoy Try the 770’s as well they feel way softer
How did the fitting go?
The clubs look amazing, unfortunately I've tried hitting older models in the past, and I struggle hitting them. But very nice looking clubs

Put a set of the P790 into the bag about 2.5 weeks before they introduced the updated version haha. No matter, even the "old" ones are fantastic !
I just got the 2019 this week for 800 brand new upgraded from stealth

Love a review against the p770
Very nice looking set of clubs, need to go give them a try!
Excited to try these in place of my 2004 Hogan FTX irons (or perhaps the P770s). I imagine the technology has improved since then.
