He needs to fix that Magnavox speaker it needs it this was a kick-ass radio for it's time and could sound a thousand times better that's a good speaker and was used in early guitar amplifiers too magnavox was THE best at the time!!

Have the LP since 1978. Was a dancefloor filler for years to come. Awsome video, great radio saved. Those who complain most likely sit in offices and never actually do any actual restoration work; ignor them unless it works for you.. I could watch a 10 hour long video made by you and the reason for that is that you show errors, work arounds, modifications. Best youtube channel for restoration of old electronics. Never stupid to ask. I was in a math class and the tutor was rambling out equation after equation. I commented, politely, that I didnt have a clue what he was doing. The tutor then asked the rest of the class "who else doesnt understand this" the whole class raised theit hands. The tutor said "thank god at least one person had the balls to question my approach." If you dont know how to read those caps you can bet most other viewers out there dont know either, myself included. Thank you for sharing your vast skills with us.
Love your channel. We had one of those radios back in early 50s. We had no tv till we moved into town in 57. We gather round the radio after supper and listen to it till bed time. Ours had a knob at the back that moved an antenna coil. We pick up short wave as well.
I watch ALL of your videos to the end and thanks for this one too. That K-Surf Disco Party sounds great. In fact I haven't heard Romeo and Juliet on the radio since the late 70's on WKTU and WBLS in NYC. It is a great forgotten classic (for those of you who follow lost hits). You don't hear that stuff on radio and it makes hearing it again a thrill especially the 15 minute version too.
Joe Blow It was a classic by Alex R Constandinos. It was released as a 12" single and the 45 had a stripped down edited version with part 2. If you have the original album, this song clocked in at a massive 28 minutes combined with parts 1 & 2, and you are a genius. That sets a record for the most lengthy disco song which was right up there with Donna Summer's "Love to Love You Baby" her debut hit from two years before which was 1976 which has a runtime of 15 minutes. His second album was the disco retelling of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", his underrated follow-up to "Romeo & Juliet". It runs about 33 minutes which was a lengthy album. 13:30 onwards - That is a piece of audio art right there and the 1934 Patterson might be the best broken radio I've ever heard so far!, far beats the usual 60 cycle hum and lack of a final inversion stage. :)
You did a good job trying to explain zero cross, a lot of guys know that. Old radios and electronics in general no worries you do a great job thank you. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos, they're very relaxing before I go to bed. I love messing with old equipment like this. I'm a industrial electrical, Electronic Tech, programmer Etc. and I still prefer to work on the old equipment.
Another completely outrageous restoration adventure you were gracious enough to take us along for the ride. I have nothing but respect for your thought processes and your willingness to dive into insanely encrusted stuff I myself wouldn't touch w/a ten foot pole. That contrast itself is fascinating; extreme high-level sleuth work coupled with the ability and willingness to dive into some of these horrific electrical cesspools. Serious dedication.

If someone only watches 10 minutes then its not a real fan/subscriber of you. Im always happy to see long videos. And I watched this one till the end too. I like your way of doing these diagnostics and repairs. The mine explorers channel is interesting too.
LOVE THIS... I spent several years as an adolescent collecting old non-working radios from my neighborhood. I am visually familiar with all this. And I really enjoy your explanatory style. Sadly, I probably cut apart & trashed a gold mine of old sets.... I just found them fascinating. I fixed 2 or 3 swapping out bad tubes. I even had old ones with tubes that had 2 fat & 2 skinny pins, with & without top cap. Loctals. Ferrite core tuners. One needed a 12Q7 glass type.... I never found one. One old Philco & a Zenith I never could get schematics. All BEFORE THE NET BY DECADES. I hung out in radio repair shops as free clean up & helper. LOVE THIS STUFF! NOW I WANT A PROJECT TUBER WITH GOOD SOUND POTENTIAL!!!!
I just recently saw an old odd name radio similar to this one at Salvation Army store. They wanted $75. It was tempting. Don't remember the name. Very short.
Dry electrolytics - I have had plenty of them fail. They are, of course, not actually "dry" but better made and sealed than the "wet" ones. They actually use the same electrolyte as the original caps. They do dry out and become resistors in many cases, depending upon quality of manufacture and aging of the seals. I have had 50+ year-old dry electrolttics still be good but testing is still a must! Also, when replacing these with new modern caps one MUST consider surge voltage. These old ones had 2 ratings - working and surge voltage. A 450V cap would happily take 525v surges but modern caps have zero tolerance for this and will fail after a few dozen over-voltages. The rated voltage IS the surge voltage so larger voltage ratings are needed when replacing old-style caps. Love your method of testing! Nice to see some of the junkers come back to life, even if only for a short while.
Nice restoration! The circuit layout actually looks much better with the blue capacitors instead of the old paper types, I like the look of the ant eaten cabinet when it is ready to collapse, character plus!
Wow, that is a fantastic radio and amazing performance, I wish we had an oldies station like that on AM here! Great seeing a rare brand and neat cabinet design, and great sensitivity even with no or little antenna in the days when longwire antennas were used for about all radios. Keep up the great work!
I have a silvertone allwave model 1640 that looks similar to your Patterson. I feel your pain with getting it to work but I know the joy when we hear them play again too! Great job getting it working again!!
Back right after high school I found an old Philco cathedral table radio someone had tossed out. It turned out that the only thing wrong with it was the speaker. It had one of those that had a coil riveted to the frame of the speaker so there was just no ripping out the old speaker and putting in a new one. I was just getting started in electronics at the time but I thought if I could disconnect the two leads going to the speaker's voice coil and relocate that coil I might be able to save the radio. I found a speaker the right size with a reasonably heavy magnet structure that looked close to what the original had. I attached the coil to the cabinet body, ran two leads down to the new speaker and it worked! I had that old Philco for a long time. I wish I still had it but it disappeared while I was deployed to Korea. Seeing old radios like this repaired and brought back to life really makes old guys like me happy to see.

Also thinking the original owner would flip their wig hearing any of the music you played. But anyone must agree, getting it to work again, to show the quality of the sound possible from the original design, that's respect and an honorable enterprise.

They would REALLY flip over knowing how most all of us are hearing their old radio. A 1920's radio playing 1970's disco being heard through the internet in the early 21st century.
These radio repair videos are awesome. The people demanding TV repair videos need to calm down. So motorboating and oscillation can often be traced to bad bypass capacitors? Very interesting. Hold on to those tapered capacitors. They are a trip. Maybe test them on the capacitor bridge for some added time-waster content. Awesome video, Shango!

Really love the style of that radio, and the sound that comes out of it, can listen to it for hours. As for your video's, i always watch them from the beginning to the end, it's really fascinating.
Great restore! You are the best analog old school technician on TH-cam, also the only one I can and do consistently watch the whole video. I ran a stereo/VCR repair shop until the end of 1999. Please keep doing your excellent videos. There's someone across our north border that does repair videos and I'm usually ready to slit my wrists after a few minutes of watching, (the one that has 4 or more videos on the same repair in excess of 45 minuets each episode). I've used your stand-off trick with a small terminal strip a number of times to replace electrolytics, usually I connect the new one to the old ground terminal (or chassis), and then directly to the empty terminal on the terminal strip. If nothing else, it allows a future owner to quickly replace that capacitor again in 30+ years!
Who would have thought that the day this radio was purchased and placed in the home that over 8 decades later it would be blasting out a 10 minute disco tune! Glad you decided to give it the full treatment and that it continues to sing!
I have watched almost every TV/radio video you have posted, and I never comment until now and I just want to say that I enjoy watching the videos and enjoy your reaction to something you find odd or amusing. I don't mind watching 45 minutes of you testing caps or tubes or whatever you want to test. I find it very cool that you can take something that is pretty much garbage and get it working again and in most cases make it work very well. You're the world's most conflicted restorer/repairer-- you want to trash it and then you work it over with a mad passion. Which i really do enjoy. I don't understand all you're talking about but it is very interesting to hear-- even the "over the shoulder" terms and explanations. Your personal asides are just fine-- you are a person after all and I choose to watch. When Carlson's burbling gets to be too much, I enjoy a quick session with you. I very much enjoy your spelunking and California interior explorations. For this radio, I do like that you've preserved as many spider carcasses as possible! Seriously, I would have taken off the metal tuning window-bezel thing and worked it over a little then sprayed on some matte clear. Still looks pretty nice, burlap and all!
That woke it up, sounds great even with the tired tubes! I don't think you need to explain yourself, we know what you're doing and why. There are always people that complain about anything and everything, they're best ignored. I learn a lot here, your channel's great, don't change a thing. That gunny sack grill cloth actually looks pretty good!
Thankfully somebody knows how to repair these old valve radios these days, instead of them ending up in landfill like the rest of our 'throw away society', a Good condition valve radio is hard to beat, deep rich sound quality instead of sounding tinny and horrible. The old radio is not perfect but at least it is still here almost 100 years old and still going. To fully rebuild it would require a complete down and clean dust and dirt off everything then repair and replace as necessary.

I enjoy this video as i left tv many years ago going back to what i used to do getting old radios from the tip in 1970s where it drove my mother up the wall and my father yelling to me and my brother to get back in the van.
So you get English language apocalyptic religious radio on Short Wave. The last time I checked in the UK, we got Arabic radio on Short Wave. Whether or not it was apocalyptic religious radio, I have no idea, but the Middle East and North Africa are within Short Wave range here.
I do recall the dog-bones are BED that B=Body E=End D=DOT. Oh my first introduction to the DOORS, I purchased the 45 RPM release of "Hello I Love You" and played that on a small RCA 45 RMP Deck hooked to an old AM tuner with built in AMP I found at the local Dump Ground, I soldered on a new cord, as the cord was shorted and it worked, then took an old book case and cut holes in her, mounted all the old car speakers I could find with little caps of different values to sort of filter for effect. While not Stereo, it did sound GREAT, had this in an old shack in our back yard, with a bedroom that sound system, for lighting I had my old electric train transformer hooked to a 6 Volt Headlight Bulb, my girlfriend at the time had colored the light with bright red nail polish so it gave off a cool red light fully dim-able, the other room in the shack had an old couch, and an old counsol TV with a florescent light that surrounded the screen, cool TV, for an antenna, since we were rather rural, I had an old bed-spring on the roof of the shack tied to 300 ohm wire hooked to the set. I could pull in 3 channels, which was as much as anyone in town could get back in the 60's. Oh man the parties we had in that old shack, I indeed got my education in that very bedroom! Sure Wish I had that old radio in that shack back then, man that would have been cool!
You may have a different approach to how you do things but I've learned a hell of a lot more about troubleshooting from you than all the naysayers. On those domino caps, I usually have to end up looking up how to read the specific brands. If you do have one go bad, there will always be at least two yahoo's who will insist they're paper. Even if you crack the caps open to show them the little mica wafers. :)

I've got a little Ward's Airline five tube super that has been a decoration forever. This video has helped inspire me to see if I can get it working. Since it's about 70 years old and I've no idea when it ran last I'll recap it and probably replace the power cord before I try powering it up.
As a new subscriber, I find your videos entertaining and very instructive. 40 years ago, I re-capped a 1930's AM console radio similar to this one without knowing anything and it worked, although I used new electrolytic caps. I trying to gain the confidence to delve into my late grandmother's 1948 HMV mantle radio and channels like yours provide great information so thank you. Cheers from Melbourne, Australia.

Nice restoration! And I know this one at 34:53, it's "Romeo & Juilet" by Alec R Constandinos. It's from the album of the same name, with vocals by Love & Kisses, the same group that did the title song from the movie "Thank God It's Friday". I used to have the album, it does have the full length album version in 2 parts. I still have the digital copy of this album, but I got rid of it a few years ago since I had when I was at a flea market many years ago and the record itself was a tad warped a bit at the lead-in groove. I missed this album. BTW, "Disco Saturday Night" is the show I listened to on "K-Surf", and thank goodness for my TuneIn app can hear it which it sounds better than the one on AM, and the quality is amazing via stream. I listened to it for the first time and I enjoyed it, and I am on the eastern time zone, "Disco Saturday Night" runs from 10 PM until 3 AM the next morning, because people are still sleeping while they're running disco music non-stop. It's on right after finishing to the "Best of Wolfman Jack" on WGNY-FM's "Fox Oldies" which is on the east coast where I live. "Fox Oldies" and WROW "Magic 590/100.5" up in Albany plays the same oldies than "K-Surf" did. I hear two Beatles songs playing "A Day in the Life" from "Sgt. Pepper", and "Drive My Car". Be careful, or else, UMG_MK will be blocked or get a copyright strike. Watch out! I remember hooking my 1934 Philco model 84B up to my CB directional beam antenna that was usually pointed to the southwest ( I was in Detroit ) and listening to far out stations. Then I found some oldies and listened to them. After couple tunes DJ came on talking to someone on the phone that was in ' Long Beach ' , DJ said " it was right down the street ". Then it faded out. I left it run the rest of the night and it never came back. Wish I caught a call letters, but they never said any. Probably the farthest ' skip ' I ever got on that antenna. It was around 1981
Your comment near the end about how people watch 10 minutes and then criticize you for something you do later in the video that they didn't see, I run into that on like every video. It's amazing. I had a guy tell me the other day I should have read the instructions quicker, and then i would have gotten the video done quicker. I'm making videos to enjoy it and have a good time, i'm not trying to do it the fastest way possible, you seem to have came up with a way to make your videos fun to film for you, that's very important or eventually you're not going to want to make them anymore, it's all about doing something you enjoy and then filming it so other people can enjoy it... if they want, and if they don't they can go watch something else. That's how I try to do it. Keep up the great work man, screw the haterz!!!!

Anybody who criticizes your diagnostic process is ignorant and probably never really diagnosed anything themselves. Your process is solid. The puzzle pieces always look obvious once it’s all put together, the trick is getting the First good clue and following the trail. It requires understanding of how things actually work. Cap swappers rarely do.
Ceramic capacitors will work fine in an old radio like that, and they rarely go bad as well. They say ceramic caps can become a problem in H-Fi amps, supposedly the ceramic can resonate or something. I enjoy watching you methods of troubleshooting. I get some tips from you as well.
ceramic caps 'can' be resonant or 'microphonic' but i doubt it'd be noticeable in normal circumstances... biggest problem is they can drift in value with temperature, depending on their temperature coefficient rating, this can be a problem in tuned circuits, but wont make a difference in normal radio audio stage coupling
Hello from the UK, I liked this one shango, its nice to see the ratty sets live too. Remenance: Switch on surge is caused when the transformer is switched off then on again in the same half cycle, if you switch off say during the pos half the trans remembers some of that magnetic flux, then if you turn on again during the positive half, the magnetizing and remembered fields add together taking the core past its maximum density saturating it, turning it into a partial short, if the trans is totally saturated its presents its primary Dc resistance to the mains pulling lots of current. Keep up the no bullshit, its great.
I have seen those postage stamp capacitors in my RCA 7K1, and they are used in the oscillator / tuning section. I can confirm they are still good today, my radio is dead accurate on stations with the dial. I only changed the filter and non polarized caps. The only thing though is that the tone control doesnt really do much but i don't mind about that. I have rebuild a resistor strip (stuck to metal chassis) with ceramic resistors and stuck against the metal chassis to cool them off. Much better than parallel the resistor strip (shown in your previous video.

Love it! I love the magic of tubes. So much, I got a cheao chifi tube buffer for the line in on my old 80s stereo amp. I can hear an important improvement in sound quality. But about half of folks I have check it out? By using tape monitor switch to take tubes in & out of the circuit? CAN'T HEAR THE DIFFERENCE.
Sweet surgery there man, Love how you used the lug of the old cap as a mounting point for the terminal strip. Thumbs down people? I want an explanation as to what the hell is wrong with this repair, If its the whining about the cap substitutions, the unit had parts substituted when he got it plus its not a customers unit its HIS radio, damn! lol

I watch ALL of your videos to the end and thanks for this one too. That K-Surf Disco Party sounds great. In fact I haven't heard Romeo and Juliet on the radio since the late 70's on WKTU and WBLS in NYC. It is a great forgotten classic (for those of you who follow lost hits). You don't hear that stuff on radio and it makes hearing it again a thrill especially the 15 minute version too.
Joe Blow It was a classic by Alex R Constandinos. It was released as a 12" single and the 45 had a stripped down edited version with part 2. If you have the original album, this song clocked in at a massive 28 minutes combined with parts 1 & 2, and you are a genius. That sets a record for the most lengthy disco song which was right up there with Donna Summer's "Love to Love You Baby" her debut hit from two years before which was 1976 which has a runtime of 15 minutes.
His second album was the disco retelling of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", his underrated follow-up to "Romeo & Juliet". It runs about 33 minutes which was a lengthy album. Take a listen.

13:30 onwards - That is a piece of audio art right there and the 1934 Patterson might be the best broken radio I've ever heard so far!, far beats the usual 60 cycle hum and lack of a final inversion stage. :)

You did a good job trying to explain zero cross, a lot of guys know that. Old radios and electronics in general no worries you do a great job thank you. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos, they're very relaxing before I go to bed. I love messing with old equipment like this. I'm a industrial electrical, Electronic Tech, programmer Etc. and I still prefer to work on the old equipment.
Another completely outrageous restoration adventure you were gracious enough to take us along for the ride. I have nothing but respect for your thought processes and your willingness to dive into insanely encrusted stuff I myself wouldn't touch w/a ten foot pole. That contrast itself is fascinating; extreme high-level sleuth work coupled with the ability and willingness to dive into some of these horrific electrical cesspools. Serious dedication.
I dig your approach because you are diagnosing rather that shotgunning and I learn something from it. Hell anybody can throw parts at something and make it work but not everyone can figure out the failure

LOVE THIS... I spent several years as an adolescent collecting old non-working radios from my neighborhood. I am visually familiar with all this. And I really enjoy your explanatory style. Sadly, I probably cut apart & trashed a gold mine of old sets.... I just found them fascinating. I fixed 2 or 3 swapping out bad tubes. I even had old ones with tubes that had 2 fat & 2 skinny pins, with & without top cap. Loctals. Ferrite core tuners. One needed a 12Q7 glass type.... I never found one. One old Philco & a Zenith I never could get schematics. All BEFORE THE NET BY DECADES. I hung out in radio repair shops as free clean up & helper. LOVE THIS STUFF! NOW I WANT A PROJECT TUBER WITH GOOD SOUND POTENTIAL!!!!
I just recently saw an old odd name radio similar to this one at Salvation Army store. They wanted $75.
It was tempting. Don't remember the name. Very short.
Dry electrolytics - I have had plenty of them fail. They are, of course, not actually "dry" but better made and sealed than the "wet" ones. They actually use the same electrolyte as the original caps. They do dry out and become resistors in many cases, depending upon quality of manufacture and aging of the seals. I have had 50+ year-old dry electrolttics still be good but testing is still a must!
Also, when replacing these with new modern caps one MUST consider surge voltage. These old ones had 2 ratings - working and surge voltage. A 450V cap would happily take 525v surges but modern caps have zero tolerance for this and will fail after a few dozen over-voltages. The rated voltage IS the surge voltage so larger voltage ratings are needed when replacing old-style caps.
Love your method of testing! Nice to see some of the junkers come back to life, even if only for a short while.

Wow, that is a fantastic radio and amazing performance, I wish we had an oldies station like that on AM here! Great seeing a rare brand and neat cabinet design, and great sensitivity even with no or little antenna in the days when longwire antennas were used for about all radios. Keep up the great work!

I have a silvertone allwave model 1640 that looks similar to your Patterson. I feel your pain with getting it to work but I know the joy when we hear them play again too! Great job getting it working again!!
Back right after high school I found an old Philco cathedral table radio someone had tossed out. It turned out that the only thing wrong with it was the speaker. It had one of those that had a coil riveted to the frame of the speaker so there was just no ripping out the old speaker and putting in a new one. I was just getting started in electronics at the time but I thought if I could disconnect the two leads going to the speaker's voice coil and relocate that coil I might be able to save the radio. I found a speaker the right size with a reasonably heavy magnet structure that looked close to what the original had. I attached the coil to the cabinet body, ran two leads down to the new speaker and it worked! I had that old Philco for a long time. I wish I still had it but it disappeared while I was deployed to Korea. Seeing old radios like this repaired and brought back to life really makes old guys like me happy to see.

Also thinking the original owner would flip their wig hearing any of the music you played. But anyone must agree, getting it to work again, to show the quality of the sound possible from the original design, that's respect and an honorable enterprise.
Cliff Miller I’m sure the people who designed and manufactured these radios in the 1930s would be tickled to hear this old queen singing again if they were still around to see it.

These radio repair videos are awesome. The people demanding TV repair videos need to calm down. So motorboating and oscillation can often be traced to bad bypass capacitors? Very interesting. Hold on to those tapered capacitors. They are a trip. Maybe test them on the capacitor bridge for some added time-waster content. Awesome video, Shango!

Really love the style of that radio, and the sound that comes out of it, can listen to it for hours. As for your video's, i always watch them from the beginning to the end, it's really fascinating.
Great restore! You are the best analog old school technician on TH-cam, also the only one I can and do consistently watch the whole video. I ran a stereo/VCR repair shop until the end of 1999. Please keep doing your excellent videos. There's someone across our north border that does repair videos and I'm usually ready to slit my wrists after a few minutes of watching, (the one that has 4 or more videos on the same repair in excess of 45 minuets each episode). I've used your stand-off trick with a small terminal strip a number of times to replace electrolytics, usually I connect the new one to the old ground terminal (or chassis), and then directly to the empty terminal on the terminal strip. If nothing else, it allows a future owner to quickly replace that capacitor again in 30+ years!
Who would have thought that the day this radio was purchased and placed in the home that over 8 decades later it would be blasting out a 10 minute disco tune! Glad you decided to give it the full treatment and that it continues to sing!
I have watched almost every TV/radio video you have posted, and I never comment until now and I just want to say that I enjoy watching the videos and enjoy your reaction to something you find odd or amusing. I don't mind watching 45 minutes of you testing caps or tubes or whatever you want to test. I find it very cool that you can take something that is pretty much garbage and get it working again and in most cases make it work very well. Seriously, I would have taken off the metal tuning window-bezel thing and worked it over a little then sprayed on some matte clear. Still looks pretty nice, burlap and all!

Thankfully somebody knows how to repair these old valve radios these days, instead of them ending up in landfill like the rest of our 'throw away society', a Good condition valve radio is hard to beat, deep rich sound quality instead of sounding tinny and horrible. The old radio is not perfect but at least it is still here almost 100 years old and still going. To fully rebuild it would require a complete down and clean dust and dirt off everything then repair and replace as necessary.

The day of the Lord is at hand, but only on shortwave---if you turn to broadcast band, everything is ok again. I do hope you plan on keeping that set after your friend is done displaying it. I know it's trashed, but it's rare, and it works

I enjoy this video as i left tv many years ago going back to what i used to do getting old radios from the tip in 1970s where it drove my mother up the wall and my father yelling to me and my brother to get back in the van.
So you get English language apocalyptic religious radio on Short Wave. The last time I checked in the UK, we got Arabic radio on Short Wave. Whether or not it was apocalyptic religious radio, I have no idea, but the Middle East and North Africa are within Short Wave range here.

I do recall the dog-bones are BED that B=Body E=End D=DOT. Oh my first introduction to the DOORS, I purchased the 45 RPM release of "Hello I Love You" and played that on a small RCA 45 RMP Deck hooked to an old AM tuner with built in AMP I found at the local Dump Ground, I soldered on a new cord, as the cord was shorted and it worked, then took an old book case and cut holes in her, mounted all the old car speakers I could find with little caps of different values to sort of filter for effect. While not Stereo, it did sound GREAT, had this in an old shack in our back yard, with a bedroom that sound system, for lighting I had my old electric train transformer hooked to a 6 Volt Headlight Bulb, my girlfriend at the time had colored the light with bright red nail polish so it gave off a cool red light fully dim-able, the other room in the shack had an old couch, and an old counsol TV with a florescent light that surrounded the screen, cool TV, for an antenna, since we were rather rural, I had an old bed-spring on the roof of the shack tied to 300 ohm wire hooked to the set. I could pull in 3 channels, which was as much as anyone in town could get back in the 60's. Oh man the parties we had in that old shack, I indeed got my education in that very bedroom! Sure Wish I had that old radio in that shack back then, man that would have been cool!
You may have a different approach to how you do things but I've learned a hell of a lot more about troubleshooting from you than all the naysayers. On those domino caps, I usually have to end up looking up how to read the specific brands. If you do have one go bad, there will always be at least two yahoo's who will insist they're paper. Even if you crack the caps open to show them the little mica wafers. :)

I've got a little Ward's Airline five tube super that has been a decoration forever. This video has helped inspire me to see if I can get it working. Since it's about 70 years old and I've no idea when it ran last I'll recap it and probably replace the power cord before I try powering it up.
As a new subscriber, I find your videos entertaining and very instructive. 40 years ago, I re-capped a 1930's AM console radio similar to this one without knowing anything and it worked, although I used new electrolytic caps. I trying to gain the confidence to delve into my late grandmother's 1948 HMV mantle radio and channels like yours provide great information so thank you. Cheers from Melbourne, Australia.

Nice restoration! And I know this one at 34:53, it's "Romeo & Juilet" by Alec R Constandinos. It's from the album of the same name, with vocals by Love & Kisses, the same group that did the title song from the movie "Thank God It's Friday".
I used to have the album, it does have the full length album version in 2 parts. I still have the digital copy of this album, but I got rid of it a few years ago since I had when I was at a flea market many years ago and the record itself was a tad warped a bit at the lead-in groove. I missed this album.
BTW, "Disco Saturday Night" is the show I listened to on "K-Surf", and thank goodness for my TuneIn app can hear it which it sounds better than the one on AM, and the quality is amazing via stream. I listened to it for the first time and I enjoyed it, and I am on the eastern time zone, "Disco Saturday Night" runs from 10 PM until 3 AM the next morning, because people are still sleeping while they're running disco music non-stop. It's on right after finishing to the "Best of Wolfman Jack" on WGNY-FM's "Fox Oldies" which is on the east coast where I live. "Fox Oldies" and WROW "Magic 590/100.5" up in Albany plays the same oldies than "K-Surf" did. I hear two Beatles songs playing "A Day in the Life" from "Sgt. Pepper", and "Drive My Car". Be careful, or else, UMG_MK will be blocked or get a copyright strike. Watch out!

Great song, It can be briefly heard in the movie "Thank God it's Friday", although it was not on the official soundtrack. I have it on a compilation in my car right now. I love just about anything Alec R Constandinos did.

I missed him so much, and I’m glad Mike is on the air, and he his now doing his thing. The song starts at 10PM. Remember “It’s 10PM, do you know where your children are?” That’s where “Disco Saturday Night” starts now. I’m glad to hear “Romeo & Juliet” by Alec R Costandinos once again. I wish I can go back and get the LP.
I remember hooking my 1934 Philco model 84B up to my CB directional beam antenna that was usually pointed to the southwest ( I was in Detroit ) and listening to far out stations. Then I found some oldies and listened to them. After couple tunes DJ came on talking to someone on the phone that was in
' Long Beach ' , DJ said " it was right down the street ".
Then it faded out. I left it run the rest of the night and it never came back.
Wish I caught a call letters, but they never said any.
Probably the farthest ' skip ' I ever got on that antenna. It was around 1981

Your comment near the end about how people watch 10 minutes and then criticize you for something you do later in the video that they didn't see, I run into that on like every video. It's amazing. I had a guy tell me the other day I should have read the instructions quicker, and then i would have gotten the video done quicker. I'm making videos to enjoy it and have a good time, i'm not trying to do it the fastest way possible, you seem to have came up with a way to make your videos fun to film for you, that's very important or eventually you're not going to want to make them anymore, it's all about doing something you enjoy and then filming it so other people can enjoy it... if they want, and if they don't they can go watch something else. That's how I try to do it. Keep up the great work man, screw the haterz!!!!

Hello Shango66. I am amazed at the reception you are able to receive. I am in N. San Diego and only wish I can pick up these station's.
Anybody who criticizes your diagnostic process is ignorant and probably never really diagnosed anything themselves. Your process is solid. The puzzle pieces always look obvious once it’s all put together, the trick is getting the First good clue and following the trail. It requires understanding of how things actually work. Cap swappers rarely do.
Ceramic capacitors will work fine in an old radio like that, and they rarely go bad as well. They say ceramic caps can become a problem in H-Fi amps, supposedly the ceramic can resonate or something.
I enjoy watching you methods of troubleshooting. I get some tips from you as well.
ceramic caps 'can' be resonant or 'microphonic' but i doubt it'd be noticeable in normal circumstances... biggest problem is they can drift in value with temperature, depending on their temperature coefficient rating, this can be a problem in tuned circuits, but wont make a difference in normal radio audio stage coupling

Hello from the UK, I liked this one shango, its nice to see the ratty sets live too.
Remenance: Switch on surge is caused when the transformer is switched off then on again in the same half cycle, if you switch off say during the pos half the trans remembers some of that magnetic flux, then if you turn on again during the positive half, the magnetizing and remembered fields add together taking the core past its maximum density saturating it, turning it into a partial short, if the trans is totally saturated its presents its primary Dc resistance to the mains pulling lots of current.
Keep up the no bullshit, its great.
I have seen those postage stamp capacitors in my RCA 7K1, and they are used in the oscillator / tuning section. I can confirm they are still good today, my radio is dead accurate on stations with the dial. I only changed the filter and non polarized caps. The only thing though is that the tone control doesnt really do much but i don't mind about that. I have rebuild a resistor strip (stuck to metal chassis) with ceramic resistors and stuck against the metal chassis to cool them off. Much better than parallel the resistor strip (shown in your previous video.

Love it! I love the magic of tubes. So much, I got a cheao chifi tube buffer for the line in on my old 80s stereo amp. I can hear an important improvement in sound quality. But about half of folks I have check it out? By using tape monitor switch to take tubes in & out of the circuit? CAN'T HEAR THE DIFFERENCE.
You should hear the Doors on C-Quam Am-Stereo, you will have separation that is unbelievable! Too bad just a few stations still use it.
