      The only ones I ever found close was Panasonic, but the only ones that can beat most consumer SONY Trinitrons are dedicated PVM monitors, and some SVGA CRT PC monitors.

    • @darikdatta

      The thing is the patents on Trinitron technology expired just as we were switching to flat panels. Diamondtrons were just hitting the market and Trinitrons were getting real competition but CRTs were already well on their way to being irrelevant.

    Years ago I fixed my wife's 13" Panasonic trinitron clone. That one had a fried flyback trandformer, which took out the horizontal output transistor and its associated emitter power resistor. Easy fix, though unsoldering the flyback off the main PC board was a PITA. Solder sucker and braid helped. At that time the parts were available off the shelf from a jobber. Set still works on a direct-tv, or ATSC converter box. Love watching you fix similar vintage stuff, helps keep this shit out of land fills.

      I certainty agree with you, I'd never connect my NES to a flat screen tv. But in terms of practicality to the common person who just wants to watch CBS it does not matter to them. The 2 factors for them are A. Is it wide screen and B. Can I pick up the damn thing when its time to move? I bought it in 1991 when my travel trailer was hit by lightning and my electricals got fried, LoL! The only issue I have with it, well, not 'it' but the power cord is the wee block at the business end of the cord has broken off somehow leaving two dangerous prongs sticking out (dangerous when plugged into 110v etc.) Now I'm on the hunt for a new power cord. Great little TV folks and I'll add it to my trailer toys again.

About 15 years ago when my family made the switch to an HDTV my dad sold the family Trinitron and about nine years ago he bought the same model Trinitron for his bed room. No shit, I just got one of these exact TV's for free. It was gonna get thrown out because the front panel was pushed in. I saved it so I can fix it, and I wanted a small CRT, and this one has pretty darn good picture. Although it works just fine at the moment since I got the remote I had working with it, I have taken the shell off and taken a look inside to see what I need to do to get at it. This video is great information!

    No manufacturer from that era could touch Sony's picture, RCA tried for years to make a similar crt. That Power supply does run hot so all the lower value caps are "probably" bad and If you didn't do it already you might want to re-solder the HOT & the Horizontal drive transformer. Great video, I watch your channel because I don't work on tube equipment and find it interesting so this was a treat getting to see you work on something from my world.

    That TV has a very stable picture and as you said the convergence is incredible. I noticed that this TV does do something interesting for a CRT, the picture doesn't grow in overall size with an image with more white in the image. Why is this? Does it have something to do with the high voltage? I've always wondered about that when watching shows on a CRT. It's much more noticeable now since we're used to watching LCD screens which don't have that effect

    • @coyote_den
      @coyote_den 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You nailed it. Lots of white means higher beam current, which drags down the HV. This accelerates the beam less and makes it "softer": you lose a bit of focus but it also becomes easier to deflect, causing the picture size to grow. This is counteracted somewhat by the B+ sagging, causing the brightness to drop and the picture to shrink, but not entirely.
      Larger sets had what Sony called a "High Voltage Regulator". This wasn't a simple shunt tube like you find in old color sets: The flyback was driven independently of the horizontal deflection and the HV stayed rock-steady.
      This set isn't big enough to need one, it just has a beefy power supply, probably well over spec for the little tube it's driving.

    • @IrishvintageTVRadio
      @IrishvintageTVRadio 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      These have a proper stabilised EHT supply. Some of the old British colour sets, the pye 697 for example on a 26 inch CRT, the picture could vary by upto an inch in size. Very noticeable on Top of the pops, with flashing lights. The ordinary viewer just accepted it.

    Your analysis and repair makes me question if the honkin' huge Trinitron that my late parents had from mid-1990 until the early 2000s experienced the same root failure. We took it to a local Sears repair center when it would not power up. About all we were told was that the power supply board had failed, and it wasn't worth repairing. IIRC that was a 32" (or bigger) with two satellite speakers and a center subwoofer that would kick out the jams pretty well. Nearly 30 years ago, good techs were becoming hard to find in our area. Maybe we could have saved it.

    17:35 screenshot. Item numbers 7 and 9 lol! Great videos as usual. Switch mode power supplies versus linear designs. I wish I could fix them well. I've enjoyed the video another TH-cam'r posted from his "lab." Be well and God Bless.

    13:22 I know I'm late to the party, but upon seeing the part number of those diodes, it wasn't but a few seconds later before I found the datasheet. Also, most zener diodes' part numbers will often clue you into the voltage, so we can guess somewhere in the 9-10 volt range, maybe as high as 12 volts. That 10 will usually be it. Likewise, an RD5ES will probably be a 5 volt zener.

    Quality set. Zeners can sure dissipate heat.

    trinitron ruled right up till they started making 16:9, then they sucked, like all 16:9 CRT sets. I had a lovely set with Dolby pro logic in the late 90's right up till about 2010 - like this one perfect convergence and geometry - nothing could touch them. we had them in our TV shop and they really stood out against all the other CRT's

    Good fix, thanks for the videos. Question, would adding another diode in paralleled help or did you already have enough current capacity to do the job? Looks like SONY didn't have the greatest design. Carl

      Sometimes you just can't put it off for later, you have to rip into it as soon as it appears in the feed.

    1989 too new for this channel, welp there goes my hopes there i was thinking we were going up market and doing some work on a 89 set, maybe a mid 90's or last crt tv sold in the usa of that year before they were stopped,

    I would like to see new CRT TV's made with a 5:3 ratio because that is what it should have been. At least in my opinion.

    I had one. Great little set. Mine took a whole lot of abuse, kept working, until it got hit with a Baseball bat.
    ( long story 😐).

    baked and brittle ^^ cool video ! It is better to test a switch-mode power supply with a load, this might be the reason for the 20V instead of 12V on the output. Perhaps you thought of this, too without filming... The distant mounting is good for the pcb but not for the diodes, perhaps it is better to install them without distance, because the cooling over the copper-foil/pcb-mass is better in this way... or using little cooling-stripes... Some diodes are cooled about the wires, thats why these are so thick in 3A-types... In this case this is perhaps without negative effect...

    Love that green on white pcb layout Sony's got going on... I think it beats out Apple's white text on black board for me. I think the only thing I would enjoy more is black pcb with gold text, not sure if that's ever been done though.
