I love this video! While old radios are cool, once you fix them you're stuck w/ today's inferior programs. These mowers bring back memories and, of course, grass still grows!
I'm sure California loves that old motor! Such a fun video. Luckily you can get zinc additive for modern oil.
I gave 1 of these away 3 months ago to a old man, It ran like new. He loves it, said he had one just like as a kid doing lawns. All i can say hope you can walk fast.

I actually thought it was video from Mustie1 when i saw it on my feed, what a surprise! Now lets hope Mustie surprises us the same way and resurrects an old tube tv from a free pile on the side of the road!

This video brought back good memories. Ours had the same engine, except you lift the handle to engage the clutch. It had big tires and a wooden handle, and solid metal roller. Dad replaced the muffler many times. You had to run behind. Your commentary is priceless. Thanks for posting.

We had a mower just like this one when I was a kid , I always cut our grass with it , we had the nicest looking lawn in our neighbourhood!

It does have a mighty “condenser” under the flying wheel next to the points. Probably should replace it with and audiophile quality one for best sparkage
Boy, does this bring back memories from the early 1950s! My dad had one and he was always lubing it and cleaning the spark plug. It started with a rope that had a wooden knob at the end. It did a yeoman's job for many many years. Later, engines from these mowers ended up in mini-bikes and go-karts when rotary lawn mowers became the mower of choice and these reel mowers were either junked, or like yours, pushed to the back of the garage and forgotten. I'm glad to see it still run. Good job and terrific video! Don't forget to lube the drive chains.
Whoever pitched that in the trash obviously doesn't know the value of a dollar. That reel mower is worth some real cash.

Our scrap recycler frequently has a reel mower set apart from all the junk mowers and they are usually priced over a hundred and fifty bucks in really poor condition.
They don't hang around, so people must want them.
My grandfather mowed his small Minneapolis lawn once a week with this same mower for years until he passed in 1973.. thanks for the memories
I remember a similar mower (back in the day) that spun the blades by pushing the mower.person powered.

Brad! Fancy meeting you here. I watch your channel often, and we've had some back and forth (some nice ... some not so much), but I love how YT makes the world so small (I'm in shango's neck of the woods - L.A.area), and how connected we all are (whether we know it or not ...lol). Between you, shango, Mr. Carlson, others etc. I might someday actually know/learn electronics to resurrect my old Bandmaster. (ahh, that's a stretch)..but I've got a LONG way to go. Don't really even know the basics. Ya never know.
I grew up mowing with that same mower..the mechanics of it facinated me and inspired my lifetime of playing with engines

i am 73 years and use to run one of these at 10 years old.. I was told what to do to start and run. No injuries because I and was careful and used COMMON SENSE. Thanks for the great memories
We had one like that from 1960s. My dad and I made a mini bike out of it. Had an old Briggs engine. Had to replace the magnet and McGiver a better pull start. In 1980 they young kid down the street took it. The frame needed welding. He and his dad made some upgrades and enjoyed it. Brought back great memories of my dad.

You did a good thing rescuing these. All parts can be bought. That's a foot valve in the take up tube .I never saw propane used as fuel. Good video.
"The whole thing is just unsafe". Epic quote! It was designed and built by World War II GI's, like my father, who laughed in the face of danger. That said, some fingers, toes, hands, and feet were lost to machines like this.
My cousin lost the pinky finger just like that when he was a little boy back in the 60s they sewed it back on but it's crooked
That's funny, because my granddad was a WWII vet and a hell of a machinist and mechanic, and he taught me a LOT about safety... because besides being grossly inconvenient (hospital bills and inability to do your job), losing a limb because you took the guard off a belt or loaded a tractor the wrong way is just damned foolish.
@@iroll My grandfather was a WWII vet, who was 34 when drafted. He was already an orphan, so they kept him stateside as a drill sergeant. He was the parts manager for a mower plant for 20+ years after he came home.

yeah sadly that's the case and its weird cause area i live in is also from late 1800's early 1930's and think id find stuff like this sitting out waiting. but i guess its either sold or given away or was to late.

And you’re not bullshitting your way through it either, you actually know what you’re talking about. BTW my sister and B-I-L had that exact same mower under their porch up in Mass. Last time I visited I went to dig it out and resurrect it but it was gone. They took it to the dump the fools!
Amazing that thing runs again. But that's the way those things were built. Still works after nearly 70 years. Your talent on fixing things is top notch! There were even no capacitors you had to change!
No safety guards or anything safe about it. When they made stuff like that in the day, people had enough common sense to use it without loosing a hand or toes ! Now days, they have to put a warning label to keep idiots from drinking the battery acid !
I do like some of the safety features on modern lawnmowers like the seat switch on a riding mower. If you fall off or get knocked off by a tree limb by accident, the engine dies. What I find annoying as hell is the reverse safety switch that kills the engine if you back up with the mower deck running. I disabled the stupid thing on my lawnmower. In my opinion, if you are stupid enough to mow your yard with your small children playing outside, you should NOT be allowed to operate a freaking can opener !

My mower says caution spinning blade on the deck. Like duh!!
In that case the absence of safeties were a safety feature in itself, it was meant to interrupt the lineage .
My neighbor once had the 1968 version of this mower. It had guards over the moving parts, and recoil start. Ran until it threw a connecting rod after 20 years.
I worked with a guy whos mother mowed his arm off when he was a child! SAFTEY FEATURES ARE SO TERRIBLE,

That's a fine old specimen of American pride and craftsmanship. Even when it was broke down and rusted up it's better than the cheap Chinese dung sold in big box bargain hunter havens. It's a beautiful thing that you got it running and cut some grass with it. 😁👍🇺🇸

Now imaging getting one of these 'modern' mowers in the same condition (left in a shed for 60 years) I bet it will never run. Same goes for electronics, you can fairly easily resurrect the first TV's, try that in fifty years with an LCD - no way.
Give it a coat of Briggs and Stratton red paint.

Hi. Greetings from Antrim, Northern Ireland. What a great video. Such a change from your normal content. (Which I absolutely love). Such fun to see you bring this old engine back to life. A long time ago, I remember my Dad saving a partially seized car engine that had overheated, using similar technique. He reckoned some the piston rings were seized to the pistons. He put some oil down each spark plug hole and turned the engine over and over. With a bit of patience the compression finally returned. That car ran well enough for years after. A very entertaining video. Keep en coming. I check TH-cam every day to see if you've posted anything.

Cheap diesel oil will have the dinosaur guts that this mower needs.

Very cool, you, sir, are indeed a Jack of all Trades. I can recall the first lawn mower Dad picked up for our yard. It was the push type mower, like that except no motor. Back then you had to keep fit if you wanted a nice looking lawn. Our house sat on 1/2 a city block so it took a couple of days to get the whole yard done, by that time the first half was ready to be mowed. Dad saw me working so damn hard mowing the yard that he borrowed his brother's Ford Tractor and 2 bottom plow, he plowed up the south quarter block and put it in to potatoes. Then instead of mowing, I had to weed the damn thing. I think I like the mowing better, but man those home grown potatoes were great when you boiled them right after digging them out of the ground,

Very cool find! I have a vintage manual reel mower that I still mow with. And, with proper maintenance, it continues to work like a dream.

We had one like that when I was a kid! I think it started with first rope pull most of the time. As a kid, it was fun to follow it around our large yard. When I was 6, we got one of those new ones that was 22” and had side discharge. Had to push those! Thanks for bringing back the memory!

We got one about 1955 I was seven at the time and mowed the lawn every other day! honestly the best mover I have ever used, today's Safety mowers have nothing on that beauty, of course back then even a 7 year old had more common sense then todays adult!

Ahhh, the good ol days before feminism. We had our wives bring us a beer and a cigarette as we were sitting in our metal clamshell lawn chair on the patio when our 7 children were gone who knows where with the neighborhood children running behind the barrel of a DDT mosquito spray nozzle . Primetime Ozzie and Harriot. Before we had the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat of ABC wide world of sports clogging up the airwaves. Of course, the signature Gleason, "To the moon, Alice"!

I use to push a Toro like that back in the 60's under my Dad's guidance. Got left in upstate New York after Dad died and took us back to California (still sane back then.........
My dad had a regular mower, Tecumseh engine? It had a windup crank. And after you wound it up, you released the "catch" to spin the motor to start it. If it didn't start, you had to lock the catch, a wind it up, repeat. Interesting video! You are so talented! Imagine. If they had powerful cordless drills back then. Instead of having to wind up a rope and pulling. I can smell that brake cleaner!
