Nick is the most "real" guitar TH-camr. He shows a lot of the not so flashy parts of sitting and recording music by yourself and I love it. Watching your videos reminds me of many long nights where I have been at my recording desk trying to nail that 2 minute part. It is not as easy as most people picture it. You are an inspiration man. Gonna be a bit but I hope I can one day make vids like yours. Loving the DT content btw.
To be fair - Pantera’s Domination has the same breakdown at the end haha. But you gotta listen to the whole song to get the full effect. The tension buildup right into it is insane. And it must be played very loud.
Yooo would you ever do a home studio rundown? Would love to see what hardware you're working with. Watching these videos have helped me understand a musical workflow a bit better. Thank you man, love the content and the wholesome dad moment hahaha
yo lets talk about how i wake up make my coffee and this is the first video i come acrossed. i click on it while taking a sip and the first thing i see is good ole nick sippin his joe. amazing
Was about to say Panthera did something like this in Domination, which was released in ‘90. Are we hearing that the almighty Dream Theater could have been inspired by Pantera?
@@MITCZUKbro what? Meshuggah came way after Dream Theater and Pantera did this kind of stuff. Pantera did all this half time stuff and Portnoy is a big fan of Pantera.
Nick, you're my favourite channel on youtube. Love what you're doing, I'm amazed that you've only got 15k followers, there's no way you won't blow up at some point.
Damn this is killer! Been planning on doing a cover of Stream of Consciousness since it's got one of my favorite riffs and your video inspired me to finish it haha
Also was a high school Pod HD Pro kid, still have it (though the screen is screwed up) and love it unconditionally like a child, even if I've moved on to other amp sims. Also, I wanted to say that blue Keisel with the pick guard hanging on the wall behind you is beautiful
My favorite Dream theater riff by far! First heard it on Once in a Live time (acid puppies i think?) and then went on to buy Awake, still my favorite DT Album today :)
Yes!! Puppies on Acid! I remember hearing that on Once In A Livetime and being like "why are they only playing part of The Mirror" since both had already been out for like 10 years when I heard it 😂
sounds sick! your meshuggah comment made me want to look up their early stuff to find when they went low. the selfcaged ep they went to A#/Bb what i saw on wiki was "The Selfcaged EP was recorded in April and May 1994, but its release was delayed to later in 1995 due to the accidents (Thordendal) chopped off part of his middle finger on a router apparently. the more you know lol
Dude, you were happy, that there were CDs back then. We have no CD players here anymore. And my kids are streaming hip-hop. Help! So, your dad is a musician, too? Aw... My hobby is music but I just played 10-15 gigs. And ... yeah was wondering if one of my kids would grab the sticks or a guitar, the keyboard. I have everything here since I got to edrums and MIDI (again) and wooow. But... you know, one should not put pressure on the children and let them live the dreams of the parents! I (43) am a physicist (PhD) and ... this channel should have way more subs and views! Greetings from Germany!
Ha in 1994 Meshuggah released the none ep which was probably even more ridiculous than what Dreamtheater was doing! Absolutely wack how far ahead DT and Meshuggah were in the early-mid 90’s
Meshuggah's None EP had Aztec Two Step which gives me the same stankface feel. Awake came out a month before but if we take time to mix and master in to account I'd say we can call it a tie :)
Thanks so much! The reason we didn't do the bookshelf design in black is because the design itself didn't work very well on a black background. The bookshelves kinda blended in too much.
@@nickbroomhallmusic dude thanks so much for replying, that’s awesome. I look forward to every Thursday because of you and I’m learning more shortcuts and things ect in Logic because of you as well. And of course you are an amazing musician, truly inspiring.
Awesome as always, dude! Apologies if you've already done this, but I'd love to see you play around with the Abasi plugin from NDSP. I recently had a 14 day trial with it and heavily debating buying.
Nice man - still my favorite DT Album I guess. We (I used to play in a Metallica Tribute Band for Years) also jammed on this Track during rehersals & Soundchecks, just like your Dad, simply because the Metric-Modulation is so, so cool. I got one question for you: Any particular reason, so kept Eurobass in your writing template and did not replace it with the Nolly Bass library? I also got both of them so I´m wondering what your thoughts are on how they compare?
The SubMission Audio stuff is a bit more versatile than Nolly since there are more articulations and realistic programming capabilities. Nolly does sound fantastic though!
Hey nick i wanted to ask you about your opinion on what drum libraries you think would be good for shoegaze or " heavy shoegaze " . Artists like whirr , loathe , deftones , and deafheaven.
I've had a burning question since the first video of yours that I saw: What do you tune the 8th string to when you're using a 7-string tuning? (drop F# for example) Is it in unison with the 7th string or is it lower?

WOW YOU KILLED IT
All the ones you guessed, you nailed!
YOU DIDNT SAY I LOVE YOU BACK!
When the chugs start, does anyone else expect domination?
Dude... Dream Theater, Spider-Man, Thicc Riffs, Golden Retreivers, Impromptu wholesome call to Dad. I think I... love you?
😂
it took you this long to finally love Nick?? 😆
Siiiiiick episode but is no one going to talk how genius are the merch designs? All the episode symbols 🤯🤯
Hahah Thank you! I was waiting for someone to comment on the symbols! 🙌 I'm pretty proud of the merch concepts!

LOVE THE HAT! HUGE DEAL
Pantera - Domination (1990)
😂 Right? They were doing this basic riff years before, and probably weren't the only ones.
Your dad must be so proud. Great work man.
Thank you!
Idk if anyone mentioned this yet, but in 94 Meshuggah put out their ep None, 7 string riffs for days!
1990 Pantera - Domination outro riff/brakdown. Same vibe on guitar - 000 000 000 rythm but with pauses
That was my initial thought as well
That sick mug sitting so close to your mouse has me anxious.
your dad has officially made his thick riff thursday debut, he must come back in another 29 episodes to keep the world stable now
Merch looking good
Next thick riff needs to be written with dad! Tell that man you love him back 😂
I always do 😂
I wanna write thicc riffs and play spiderman with Nick 😭
Bro if you don’t tell your dad you love him back!!!!!!! 😂 Fantastic walk through and cover my man!
This lol bro cut it out so we wouldn't hear it.
Im so stoked for Portnoy's return. Let's hope for a legendary album
Thick Riff Dad sounds cool
im pretty sure Pantera was doin that shit in 1990. lol listen to Primal Concrete Sledge.
EDIT: i guess the whole 7 string thing is unique for 94
The merch is spot and tasty, nice! Too bad if I order to my country I’m punished with import tax and VAT, still crunching the numbers though 😂

I love Thicc Riff Thursday
13:45, yes.. painfully yes haha.
@10:32 YOU LEFT YOUR DAD HANGING BRO 😂
Today we are going to Throwback Riff Thrusdaaay, Dream Theater was really ahead of his time on 90's, love you mah Niiib
Pantera primal concrete sledge I think was similar. Awesome groove though for sure 💯

Pantera and Messhugah did It before Dream Theater

Love the hat homie. Imma have to grab one soon.
Thanks man!
Nick really dripped out in this episode
shoutout dad
I bought a ps5 just to play Spiderman 2.
Now that I've platinumed the game, I'm selling my console.
Absolutely worth it.

I love Thursdays!

W father fr
THERE HE IS for ThiiiicccccccccCCCCCCC Riff Thursday
that was the best intro to a video I've ever seen. please don't stop. that was hilarious
This was quite a thicc thursday indeed..
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads. My dad is so cool but he never listened to Dream Theater.
Always looking forward thick riff thurdays!

New spiderman was super good! They made it even better than the first
That snare sound is niiiice
Haha, sounds siiiick!!!!
Bro how you shifting your dad with no "I love you" in the recorded vid 😂😂
Cool dad!
Meshuggah's None EP had Aztec Two Step which gives me the same stankface feel. Awake came out a month before but if we take time to mix and master in to account I'd say we can call it a tie :)
The merch is so cool dude! Are you sell the Bookshelf t-shirt in black ever?

@@nickbroomhallmusic Gotchya thanks!
I remember reading somewhere that they played the intro live during writing and called it puppies on acid
Yes! It's on their live album Once In A Livetime
Yeah, they played it on the Images and Words tour a few times as an intro to Take the Time I think
Would love a video of how you process your drums ect.. we need help to get that PUNCH 🤣
I did a short rundown of my drum mix in my first video for GGD PV (episode 16), but I can do a more updated video on a Tutorial Tuesday episode!

Pantera at the end of Domination 1990
Hey nick i wanted to ask you about your opinion on what drum libraries you think would be good for shoegaze or " heavy shoegaze " . Artists like whirr , loathe , deftones , and deafheaven.
I’m assuming your dad got you into guitar? So fun
My dad is primarily a drummer so he got me into drums very young but I started learning guitar around 11 years old!
Spider-Man 2 is flawless.. other than the length. Super short game
I've had a burning question since the first video of yours that I saw: What do you tune the 8th string to when you're using a 7-string tuning? (drop F# for example) Is it in unison with the 7th string or is it lower?
8 string standard, bottom to top: F# B E a d g b e
Didnt. Even. Say. I love you too. To. His. Papa. sad
Same thing goes for Kevin Moore,no more same vibe.Even Jordan is a monster, but not so much inspired by him.
Can we Get some T H A L L (vildhjarta) style thick riffs? maybe a THALL THURSDAY????????
