I can't believe the Shedder from the 90's movie is the best ninja out of all Shedders. Funny thing, I saw a Shedder cosplay this year at Desucon. It was the 90's cartoon one.
As somebody who grew up with the original cartoons and movies, as well as watched a good amount of the of the cartoon from the 2000s, I wholeheartedly agree. I'd even argue that he's probably the best all around iteration of the Shredder.
The 2012 TMNT Shredder is one of the most powerful characters I've seen, and I've seen some OP characters. The way he moves and speaks always struck terror through me and the way he attacks is so brutal. The 2012 series is so ripe with cultural nods to Japan and and I hope he covers that version more.
Yeah, each iteration borrows from what came before. Well, most of them...1987 was intended to be the departure point initially from the source material. But, then you go into the 2000's iterations and they were meant to be based on the original comics as well as 2012 bringing everything from the past full circle. I'm a little torn on the video to be honest. But only because I am a big fan and do understand there has been a lot of mythos that has been made in the 30 years since it was made. But I'll give Gaijin credit that there are times when they are do adapt a lot of stuff closer to Japanese Culture each time they make another iteration.
As a man who grew up watching the turtles and who's favorite has always been the 90's movies it's nice to know that the movie Shredder has a solid ninja background
"These guys are as effective as a hyperactive teenager wearing a caution orange jump suit." Don't lump Utrom Shredder in with '87 TMNT Shredder. Utrom Shredder is *the* most effective Shredder in the entire franchise outside of the movie Shredder. IDW Shredder is also a contender.
I would say IDW Shrededer has 90s movie Shredder beat IMO. He has far more ties to Japanese culture, uses more forms of ninjutsu, and has the secrecy, infiltration, and espionage thing down pat.
2012 Shredder defeated all four turtles all on his own multiple times throughout the series (similarly to the Utrom Shredder and the 1990 Shredder) AND he did something NO other iteration of Shredder has EVER done: he literally killed Splinter... TWICE. That's effective and competent as hell! And for the record, he did care about reforming the Foot Clan and NOT about ruling the world. Once he learned of his true heritage, being the son of Oroku Keiji, he started rebuilding the Foot Clan until it became a massive criminal organization we see in the series. He desired revenge on Hamato Yoshi/Splinter for 'taking' Tang Shen from him and because the Hamato Clan nearly wiped out the entirety of the Foot Clan back when Oroku Saki was a child and when Yoshi's father, Yuuta, was its leader. However, it was never stated, nor implied that Shredder wanted to rule the world in that series.
1980 Shredder: most funny 1990 movie Shredder: best ninja 2000 Shredder: most interesting background 2012 Shredder: best overall villain Recent movie Shredder: most intimidating/badass
Being a giant heap of blades isn't really that intimidating. 2003 Shredder got to the point when even seeing him in nearest proximity prompted the "Oh crap" kind of reaction.
Recent movie Shredder: Cosplaying as a Warhammer 40k Chaos Terminator. Come on, I can't be the only guy who thought this upon seeing his oversized armor and weapons.
I agree he doesn't have the presence of 2003 Shredder, but being a heap of blades is still pretty intimidating. He felt like a one of the robot ninjas from Mortal Kombat.
Definitely the best iteration of Karai ever. Her backstory and development in the series give her character dynamics with Shredder and Splinter a whole new layer of depth. Plus, her going from an enemy of the turtles to their close ally makes her relationship with the turtles all the more fascinating, especially when it comes to Leonardo.
@@redfather5342 Still waiting to the version of Karai closer to the Mirage comics, where she was a leader of the Foot Clan and opposed Shredder Elites instead of being Shredders' right hand woman.
While the 80s cartoon Shredder suffered from the typical 80s villain ego problems, he was far from a bad character. Like Skeletor, Megatron, Cobra Commander, and Duke Igthorne before him, the weekly episode nature of the show if not daily issue of having to be beaten by the TMNT combined with the constant bombardment of parents organizations and censors getting in the way of making him more competent means they couldn't use the character to his full potential. Still I love the original movie and think it is one of the best comic book based movies even today just like the Christopher Reeves Superman and Micheal Keaton Batman so able to stand up with any MCU or X-Men film.
So TMNT 2015 Shedder I guess is One Dimensional I guess I can see that being he's mostly focused on killing Splitter but he also shows Concern for his "daughter" sometimes...But yeah Movie Shedder from 1990 is Probably the best one
But only because the film was edited so heavily because they listened to fans who didn't know anything about it past the 1987 cartoon. I didn't mind if they changed it up. They've only been flourishing BECAUSE everyone is reinventing them. They've gone through 4 or 5 publishers who had their shot to make them their own.
I love how the best Ninja Turtles iteration was the 90s movie. That movie was very good on the accuracy of being a ninja for both the Turtles and Shredder.
I love this series and channel! This and a few others make me feel like a better person just by watching because of how unbiased they come across and makes me happy because of how much joy you put into them. =D
Okay I am so glad someone talked about this. Shredder is seen as a one army man with strength and rage. I remember watching this version of shredder and just being amazed. The culture shown and explained in the video made this version of shredder even better!
You gotta admit though that it was pretty cool of the 2012 Staff to base that Shredders fighting style and tactics on real life Ninja's too most of the time. And while he may not have been quite as faitfull as the 1990 Shredder he was still a powerfull and well coordinated master of the shadows.
I really love Shredder from Batman and TMNT crossover. He smashed Batman in 1vs 1 and when he fought him, the first thing Shredder did was disabling his utility belt.
you know when I actually watched this when I was old enough to understand some of the stuff (and I had seen some of the turtles beforehand) I actually cried and was genuinely pissed at Casey for pulling the lever on the garbage truck XD
Seeing Zer0 in the opening I'd very much love an episode on him. He seems pretty good as far as the ninja theme goes. Stealth, assassination, gathering information (seeing crit points) as well as perfect secrecy - we don't even know what species he (she?) is; or maybe a robot? Some insight from your end would be nice.
I like it quite a bit. Of the 3 cartoons, it does the best job of balancing the goofiness and darker more serious moments. I also really love that they've made Donatello's character much more than a generic nerd.
Last I checked, the 2012 Shredder didn't care much about money, nor did he care about ruling the world. He just wanted to defeat Splinter and his students. He was a much more formidable force and a very skilled ninja than most, if not all other incarnations.
That's actually pretty cool that the Shredder from the 90s movie actually has some history and real life accuracy behind him, and being a fan of that movie, I'm really glad to see this sort of thing ^w^ I would also like to point out that Shredder's changes, however little or big they may be, comes from the fact that the TMNT universe is a very moldable universe, the basics of the universe is that you need 4 turtles to be the main heroes, a wise master to guide them, some of human companions to help them in the human world, and a Shredder character who they have to tussle with every once in a while, along with other fun villains, and they can meet new allies along the way, like mutants, aliens and other humans, these characters can be any gender you wish them to be, and I think that because the Shredder is the main villain, they often get very basic characters as other characters are more fun to play around with, but that's just my theory, if it seems right to you, then that's good, if you don't that's just your opinion and you're perfectly entitled to it.
I'm honestly surprised that you didn't talk about his original version. Granted it wasn't around long. Still, as far as being Real Ninja, the 2012 series is about as close as they've ever been, so seeing another episode about that series in particular would be awesome. But still. This was SO AWESOME to see. And this whole series has got me practically frothing at the mouth to see a particular character tackled. But I'm not going to name them in the hopes that at some point in the future I'd be able to colaborate with you on it.
Great video my 11and 17-year-old nephews were shocked that the shredder of my day was the best ninja! Thanks for all your amazingly creative and entertaining content.
I think Gaijin Goomba was wrong about the 2000s shredder and 2012 shredder because they were both smart and powerful and he didn't even focus on the mirage and idw shredder! Also the demon/dragon Shredder too!
Oh and forgot, honor doesn't always matter. The shredders main goal was to powerful and the others that wanted to kill splinter for beating him or the mirage shredder killed Splinter's master for killing his brother.
Yeah...I don’t think Gaijin watched the 2000s or 2012 versions of TMNT...yes the 03 Shredder was an alien...who practiced and mastered Ninjutsu and gave the illusion of being unkillable when he first appeared. Remember when it looked like his head got cut off but he just put it back on?
Wait ! One of them photos near the end shows a ninja on the top of a frog ! And thats an ability in the new final fantasy 14 expansion pack !!! MIND BLOWN !
I never thought of shredder as a ninja in the first place. I thought he was one weird guy in metal samurai armour that uses fist things, and has ninjas serving as his "army."
Shredder has been called more of a Samurai in the later years due to his outfit. They even make it a flat out statement in the 2012 series. I'm surprised it took me that long to notice.
They way he but the ninja almost sounds like the mafia. Loyal to the group, told no one about their operations , and were very clever in assassination (Valentine's day massacre)
Now I have even more respect and love to the 1990 film version of The Shredder, and knowing about Chiyome was a real nice treat I hope to know more about her as well. 😁
Which one, utrom shredder, cyber shredder, tengu shredder, karai shredder, or one of the shredder warriors that originally defeated the tengu shredder?
Bruno Franco He started out really badass, and also when Karai took up the mantle of Shredder when he was vanquished the first time too, but then things got ridiculous in later seasons.
l love this video & all the stuff/topics you put into it along with the ninja teacher helping you out I'd wish you talk more about the Demon/Tengu Shredder though.
KuroNoTenno Seeing as how it was originally supposed to have been a one issue thing, how was he a loser? Kevin and Peter had no idea their comic would garner so much attention and popularity.
I'd like to see Gaigjin do one of these on the Shogun update for tf2 some of the items have great stories behind them such as the Half-Zatoichi a katana that hurts you if you try switching weapons without killing anyone. Not only is it a reference to the Muramasa a sword smith who made cursed blades that had the same effect, but is a reference to Zatoichi the blind swordsman. Only half because the two classes that can equip the item soldier and demoman have either a helmet blocking most of their sight or a eyepatch, making them half blind. More of a movie samurai portrayal, but still interesting.
Okay, that was something I didn't expect. Before watching this video I thought that Shredder was a Samurai, but seeing how much Shinobi Influence is in the character I can be safe to say that I was partially wrong. So thank you Gaijin! For all that you had done, thank you.
One thing about his helmet: it resembles that of a Kabuto, the traditional helmet of the samurai. And since samurai were enemies of the ninja, it's kind of fitting.
I asked him this in a stream, and talked about how he even used ninja weapons (insert kunai here), he has firearms, he can make dummies to make enemies think he's dead so he can escape (insert dead ringer here), he disguises, and does espionage but Gaijin said "I don't think he's a ninja, I just think he's a really good spy".
Gaijin, if you're going to continue culture shock, can you do a video about the servants from the Fate series? Like their origins, the meaning of their Noble Phantasms and such?
PLENTY to work with there even among the different classes and even the same character like Cu Chulainn who has his well known Lancer class but also Caster and Berserker. Same for Saber..hell you've got Saber Lily, Saber Arturia, and Saber Nero who all look the same but are completely different historical characters. He could do a complete mini series like this on the Fate series alone.
Yeah Nero is the Red very cocky and vain Saber, while Saber Lily is Arturia before she got Excalibur so she's more innocent and full of hope as opposed to the jaded version we know from Fate/Stay Night.
Saber Nero is based on r63 Emperor Nero while Saber Lily is based on a younger still in training r63 King Arthur.Fate is weird but fucking amazing i would wholeheartedly recommend you download Fate Grand Order the phone game it's pretty fucking good for a f2p game and it doesn't try to lock you behind a paywall all of the game is accessible for free and paying is only useful if you are hunting for a specific servant.
Coming back to this video years later and I was on a big Nioh kick. Playing Nioh 2 as a female protag got the Wandering Shrine Maiden armor set and as I was listening I remembered that armor mainly because of the description. Not belonging to any particular shrine, they traveled the land, fulfilling requests for divination and exorcism rituals from the people they met along the way. It is said that wandering shrine maidens from Shimano Province were actually ninja agents, dispatched by the Takeda clan who ruled over that region. I hadn't put the two together before but it's a fun little hindsight thing.
To people who might be freaking out at r63 Shredder, watch the video. It makes sense. =3 Trust me, I was surprised too.

I wanted to thank you because you reminded me of long lost memories of my childhood.
Yeah, you totally called my head-nodding.
Still kinda like the 2012 Shredder too, though... ^^;;
Wait ! One of them photos near the end shows a ninja on the top of a frog ! And thats an ability in the new final fantasy 14 expansion pack !!! MIND BLOWN !
Its been a year and the channel is still great.
I never thought of shredder as a ninja in the first place. I thought he was one weird guy in metal samurai armour that uses fist things, and has ninjas serving as his "army."
wow what a super cool and interesting video and this was only the first? Can't wait to see the others this is going to be fun!
Shredder has been called more of a Samurai in the later years due to his outfit. They even make it a flat out statement in the 2012 series. I'm surprised it took me that long to notice.
Huh, this version of Shredder is one I can admire as he isn’t truly evil. Also that scene you showed at the end is the one that sealed it for me!
They way he but the ninja almost sounds like the mafia. Loyal to the group, told no one about their operations , and were very clever in assassination (Valentine's day massacre)
just now noticed the which ninja jingle rhythm is the same as table flip from game grumps
Wow that was so cool to know about Shredder. Thanks Gaijin.
Awesome! I'm excited for this series!
When Shredder said "I am your father" I just thought of Darth Vader!
this was really cool i wish I had the money to add to the patreon both cause I love your work but also so i can be part of picking things like this.
(1:25) OMG YESS!!!
I can totally see how that's the most ninja version!!
Now I have even more respect and love to the 1990 film version of The Shredder, and knowing about Chiyome was a real nice treat I hope to know more about her as well. 😁
1:32 - Oh hells yes now we're talking XD
7:45 - Gajin.....what have you done....?!
18+
The 2000's Shredder is still my favorite, what's with all that hate?
Yeah seriously I loved the guy, beyond menacing and skilled.
Bruno Franco Dude, same
He's my favorite Shredder but honestly as the series went on he became less and less menacing, especially after it was revealed he was an utrom.
Which one, utrom shredder, cyber shredder, tengu shredder, karai shredder, or one of the shredder warriors that originally defeated the tengu shredder?
Bruno Franco He started out really badass, and also when Karai took up the mantle of Shredder when he was vanquished the first time too, but then things got ridiculous in later seasons.
shredders a samurai in the tmt movie bassically
l love this video & all the stuff/topics you put into it along with the ninja teacher helping you out I'd wish you talk more about the Demon/Tengu Shredder though.
why does he look like a samurai
What about the original shredder the comic book shredder
You mean the looser who got killed off in his very first appearance?
The Idw shredder who was a genius in combat
KuroNoTenno Seeing as how it was originally supposed to have been a one issue thing, how was he a loser? Kevin and Peter had no idea their comic would garner so much attention and popularity.
Doesn't change the fact that he got offed on the first night.
So the Shredder has the good example as shinobi gashira (ninja chief)
Yea the late 2000 series shredder was a beast, in combat and even in some of his strategy
This just adds more to why I've always said that movie was a quality piece of work.
Hes actually came from the idea of a cheese grater
I had 3 episodes of tmnt on dvd and I watched them over and over and over again it was so good
I'm still waiting for him explaining how hanzo or genji are good or bad ninjas.
Love your series bro. I’m a huge ninja fan and am looking forward to you doing a video on rikimaru from Tenchu
"But I don't wanna conquer this place... I wanna conquer Earrrrth...!"
~ 80's Shredder
Loving this series! Keep up the good work :D
I just noticed that there is ninja runing around in background at 6:34 XD
One thing about his helmet: it resembles that of a Kabuto, the traditional helmet of the samurai. And since samurai were enemies of the ninja, it's kind of fitting.
Ninjas and Samurai were not enemies that's just in pop culture, in fact most Ninja were samurai
Anyone else want to see if Batman is a real Ninja?
Trust me, he's on the list... =3
i never thought of that..
Nanananananananananana BATMAN, BATMAN!
And here I thought I couldn't love the 1990 TMNT movie anymore than I already do. Thanks Gaijin Goombah! ^_^
I really hope that the next TMNT Shredder is very much like this one
I like how the beginning was the end of a pbs kids show
I can't believe I missed you at Anime
North ! :(
On time,I've been waiting for a TMNT theory
Bleeding Alfredo hey we have the same name! my name is Alfredo too!
6:00 Is that because the armor protects his arms? X3
I would love to see greninja.
Remember in the predator video when honor was something ninja didn't care about?
Quick question, Is the Spy from TF2 a ninja? He focuses on misdirection and illusion to perform assassinations and disrupt enemy lines.
I like that idea
PLENTY to work with there even among the different classes and even the same character like Cu Chulainn who has his well known Lancer class but also Caster and Berserker. Same for Saber..hell you've got Saber Lily, Saber Arturia, and Saber Nero who all look the same but are completely different historical characters. He could do a complete mini series like this on the Fate series alone.
Who is Saber Lily?
Wait, Nero also became a Saber?
I find it interesting that Greninja is on your list of good ninjas
Now I want a movie on the Aruki Miko.
While not being all that ninja-like, 2003 Shredder was pretty badass.
