    Watch the video of the post game show after game 4 of the 1983 cup finals where he was interviewed. It's a classic. When asked about his Tony award winning performance after the Glen Anderson incident he talked about Gretzky acting like he was dieing a few games before and looked dead into the camera and said "2 can play at that game". There will absolutely never be anyone like Batlin' Billy Smith.

    He retired 6 months before I was born but I got to watch Hextall, Emery, Snow, Poitvan, Roy and Osgood drop the mits a few times not to mention Cloutier wanting to fight the entire Islanders bench. I agree goalies are somewhat unhinged.

    Goalies today are so big and wear so much equipment that they are more focused net coverage, rather than challenging shooters, coming out and playing the angles. Those 80's goalies with today's equipment would be something to watch.

    • @adk46er5203
      @adk46er5203 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed. People who downgrade those goalies. I think the size of the equipment they wear now is ridiculous. The width of these pads needs to cut down. Also goalies do not wear gloves. They wear baskets.

    • @jeffmccoy1700

      Today's goaltenders are so bulked up it's like equipment on steroids. In previous eras goaltending was more of an art form, each goaltender could be distinguished from another with their own unique style. Today they are so bulked it's hard to distinguish one from another.

      @@oldatarigamer quickness and skill and yes athleticism were more integral back then. With smaller sized equipment there was more net space to cover. Today's goaltending with less net space to cover because of bigger sized equipment - the shooters have less open net to aim at - it seems the positions' primary demand be where the puck will hit you.

    There was an Isles fan I read a comment from a few years ago. He said that when he was a kid, Mr. Billy volunteered to coach his little league baseball team. At practice he would hit the ball to the kids and tell them "If any of you little shits drop the ball, you'll have to buy me a beer."

    Billy Smith was my favorite player of all time and a big reason I became an Islander fan and a hockey fan back in 1973 (at the relatively late age of 15). Strangely enough I slowly learned he could be a "dirty" player, which I didn't like, and when he stopped shaking hands after playoff series I strongly disagreed with it. But he was still Billy Smith, he still played great in goal, so it was too late for me to change my fandom. Great to hear your perspective of his career. You did a great job. Two of his best games came in the '82 Finals against the Canucks, Games 3 and 4 in Vancouver. He was so sharp, but so was the whole team. Canucks never had a chance. Must have been tough for you as a young kid / young hockey fan. Great memories for me, though.

    Don Cherry used to talk about Smith while he was broadcasting Islander playoff games. He'd say between the 2nd and 3rd period in a close game that beating Smith in the third period was going to be tough. Then once inside 5 minutes left, and throughout overtime it would be impossible. He said Smith and Cheever's were the best money goaltenders of all time. That's why you pay them, to make the saves when they have to. I don't recall The exact Islander overtime record back then, but it's insane. Btw... I appreciate you realizing the Islanders had run out of gas when they finally lost to Edmonton. I don't remember the exact number, but the Islanders had beaten Edmonton 8 or 9 straight times during that 2 year period, regular season and playoffs. There's an Edmonton broadcast on TH-cam from December 84 where the islanders had beat Edmonton a week or two before in Edmonton. This game was a home game for the Islanders and the game wasn't even 10 minutes old and Islanders were up 4-0. The first period ended 5-1 in the game final was 6-2. The Edmonton broadcasters we're talking about were the oilers ever going to be the Islanders. Just the fact the islanders got to the finals in the fifth year is an amazing accomplishment. Not only physically, but in any sport, there are only so many games that you can get yourself up to that level mentally. That's why I consider the 19 straight playoff series wins the greatest team sport accomplishment in sports history. The mental consistency required to run off a streAk like that is unparalleled.

    He would have been considered the best in the late 70's, but for that guy on Montreal. He really took advantage of the 1 referee system they used at the time. Today, w/ 2 Referees he would not have been very effective. This was also at the time when the game was changing.. when the 70's came in, many goalies still played without a mask.. players kept the shots down.. by the time the 70's ended... all were wearing them and shooting for the top of the net was opening things up. Now, the goalie equipment of today take a little guy like Ryan Miller and makes him quite big. Back then, the equipment was not much bigger than the goalie, they actually had to make saves rather than just play big in front of the shot.. today, the skill of the shooters is just sick.. different game.. still love those teams of the late 70's..

    I haven’t watched video yet, but I want to make it abundantly clear that you could never in any era I have followed the NHL win the cup without goaltending. Billy Smith was a winner. I cried so hard one playoff series (1983) against my team the Rangers when only Smith kept the isles in the series at a vital point. Eventually they won the series and their fourth straight cup. I cried like a baby at 11 years old. My mother had to hug and try to make me feel better before going to my school filled with islander bandwagon ‘fans’ in Connecticut. I hated Smith so hard. Wanted him dead. True playoff performer. Huge part of the four straight 80s islanders Stanley cups. Easy to say now at 50. Back then I only hated him hard.

    The most nonchalant HOF goaltender in history. The MOST average G in the regular season that turned into a brick wall in the playoffs. I actually wanted to keep Chico over Smitty when Chico was traded. Resch was the reason they came back from being down 3 games to none TWICE in a row in the 1975 playoffs. That was almost as thrilling for a young kid as winning in 1980. Hindsight... I think Torrey made the right decision.

    There's been numerous examples of teams that looked top tier and made deep runs but never figured out how to win the cup. The rangers of the mid 2010's were a great example of this. What about the St. Louis blues of the 2010's? They ran into the Kings and Blackhawk runs. I remember the Predators having several deep runs as well. They were built to win for awhile and still do. The caps were the ultimate example of this for about 10 years straight. They finally got the monkey off their back a few years ago but I sure do remember them being the ultimate failures come playoff time. Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Avalanche are the two biggest currently. They have all the talent in the world but always find a way to fk it up. Colorado just shed their 2nd round luck finally, Leafs havent though lol
