Nicely done. She’s a real beaut mate. I just acquired a 1930s south bend 9a and was watching your video for ideas and such. Some people are against repainting and prefer the bare metal look. I like the metal look myself however I was taught that metal must be treated or it’ll corrode. I suppose clear coat would count as treating the metal but I really like the color you went with and the red accent lettering. Great looking lathe
Thanks Johnathon, I love the grey colour of the myford and much of the old british machinery was the same grey, my pillar drills and mill are now all repainted the same colour. Some parts of the lathe were pretty beat up and marked and the aluminium covers were in bad condition. This lathe was finished in grey when it was built in the 1950s so more then happy to try and restore it to that. Cheers.
What a beauty Loz! You do such terrific work as always. I didn't realize how much you know about motors and laths - pretty impressive mate. Look forward to seeing it in actiion...Booyah!
Nice one keith, hope it goes well, I thought restoring this was difficult at the time until I did my Centec mill, the myford was easy in comparison. Cheers.
Excellent job on the lathe looks stunning, currently attempting a restoration job on my myford ml7 did you use the original myford paint 🤔 did you have to thin the paint 🎨 and if so what did you use any advice would be much appreciated keep up the good work 😀
Thanks mate, yes I got the paint from Paragon paints myford grey enamel, I used fast thinners from an auto paint supplier to thin it down, I think paragon supply thinners though if needed. cant remember exactly the ratio but somewhere around 25% thinners, just try it in the gun if spraying and adjust as needed, it comes quite thick in the tin okay for brush painting too thick to spray. good luck. Cheers.
Cheers bud, no im not, I just learn as i go, watch videos etc all the info you need is out there somewhere guess it helps if you love doing what you are doing.
I've just stripped off my Myford lathe bed and some of the aluminium components so I'm almost ready to spray paint. Did you use etching primer on ALL metals and then a filler spray over the rough surfaces for sanding back? Thanks
Hi, on the lathe bed i just loaded it with etching primer and plenty of top coat, the rest of the parts which were badly marked and dented i used dolphin glaze filler which is like a thick cream, applied it with my hand and sanded it back. you could use spray putty and keep sanding back until you get a flat finish
I have to admit when you first posted part 1 I thought you had accidentally forgot to add a space between My and Ford and thought you were rebuilding a car motor!
Wow that Myford looks really nice, better than my really old 4" Precision Myford - you have done a very good job on the paint work - I'm envious :-)
Thanks mate I enjoy using it 👍
