Oh wow, they look and work amazingly well Paul. I feel for you lifting it on your own. I had to lift my Colchester on my own when I was trying to level it. I used the engine crane and it struggled lifting the tail stock end LOL. Those blocks will make cleaning a breeze now. Cheers, Aaron
Hello Aaron,
I think my ego got in the way as I did not want to ask for help... bit silly really, but all turned out well. It has made the whole setup much more usable... slowly slowly I am getting things how I want them and to be truthful if I wanted hurry hurry I would not have retired - lol.
Take care.
Paul,,
Great job Paul, and it has the benefit of making it easier to tidy up after. I couldn't get more than one word out yesterday, every time I hit the space bar, the video would start up again. I just thought I would add the customary "cheers" to it today, so cheers!
Hello,
Another step forward in getting some of the bits and bobs done in the workshop...
See you next time.
Paul,,
Hi Paul, thanks for taking the time to make this video.
I have an ML7 in bits on a pallet to be reassembled and it's helpful to see a fully set up machine.
Cheers Jon
Hello Jon,
I am pleased the video was of help... Most of my Unimat ones are to try and help others, with these old machines sometimes it's difficult to find information. Good luck with your rebuild and thanks for watching.
Take care.
Paul,,
The blocks worked well. A more comfortable height to work saves the back. Good job all around.
Hello Vernon,
Thanks for visiting... I am really pleased how it all worked out... and it's a lot nicer to use. Another job done in setting up my little workshop...
Take care.
Paul,,
Hi again Paul. Those are some very nice risers for the lathe. I had heard of them before, but never seen them. It's great that those leveling jacks are built in. Having the lathe a bit taller will give you plenty of room for chips below, and room around the carriage wheel etc for your hand.
This is all great info for when I (eventually) do the installation of the emco, and I may end up making something very similar for that machine. I'm 187cm or 6'2", so any extra height on my machines is most welcome. This video has been very helpful - thanks Paul.
One more thing: CONGRATULATIONS on reaching 500 subscribers! 1000 is just around the corner. :-)
Hello Craig,
I would have the blocks on any future lathe I have... If you do make them it would be great to see a video of it...
Thanks for the congratulations... I am very grateful for the subscribers, I am not counting my chickens about getting to 1,000 but I would be nice...
Take care.
Paul,,
Thanks for this video, My risers are missing the adjustment nuts and your video helped me understand what I need to make to fix it
Hello Matt,
Many thanks for watching and I am pleased to hear the video was useful...
Take care.
Paul,,
You are right, those raiser block make it so much easier to clean and work around the lathe. You did very well to lift that on yourself. We are at a crossover stage, with dad finding it harder to lift heavy stuff and I'm not yet strong enough. We are starting to think about better ways to lift heavy items
Hi Joseph,
It was a bit of a struggle to be truthful... Smart move by you and Dad to find ways to pick up heavy items mechanically... Thanks for watching.
Take care.
Paul,,
These raiser blocks are a win. No standing on a pallet for you.
I see you passed the 500 subs. Congratulations, things are going well.
Hi Michel,
Yes they have made a big difference and thank goodness the pallet was avoided... Many thanks for the congratulations, I am very grateful to you guys
for the shout outs and the viewers that have subscribed... Thanks for visiting,
Take care.
Paul,,
Hi Paul,
The myford looks good! I find it one of the most beautiful small type lathes!
I think you can have a lot of fun with it!
Hello Chris,
Thanks for visiting... The Myford is a nice looking lathe... and I was very pleased when I got it the back end of last year...
Take care.
Paul,,
Getting there now Paul, looking good in its elevated position. Not fun moving machines round on your own. 1st customer job, well done. Cheers, Jon
Hi Jon,
I am a lot happier with the setup now... Excuse the pun but I have a far better foundation now to check everything else on the lathe... I did struggle a bit moving the lathe about.
Thanks for watching.
Paul,,
hi Paul
nicely thought through, you may have to put a test bar in the chuck to check for run out / taper, the bed casting may / usually twist very slighlty giving a taper when turning, just a thought, i had to do that to mine to remove a slight tapering
see you next time and nice to see you back in workshop
regards
mr f
Hello Mr. F,
It is very good being in the workshop again and sorting out the Myford. That is a good tip regarding checking if I have any unwanted tapering going on... I'll add that to my to do list... Thanks for watching.
See you next time.
Paul,,
That is a very nice lathe you have there. Duckboards are very good for the feet if you have to stand at a machine for any length of time I can tell you this from experience.
Hello David,
Thanks for visiting... As an apprentice we had Duckboards in the training center... The lathe dates from around 1966 and the previous owner had it for around 20 years. It had worked for its living but should do me fine...
Take care.
Paul,,
They will make the lathe easier to use . Cheers .
Hello Max,
I have done a couple of bits on the lathe since fitting them and it does seem better... Thanks for watching.
Take care.
Paul,,
Nice! Those looks like an excellent addition 😊. Would work very well if your table top is slightly warped. I think I'll be looking into that in the very near future. Thanks for that 😁. Cheers!
Hello Chris,
Thanks for dropping by.... They would be perfect for a slightly warped table top... the surface my lathe is on is wooden and has been there for many years so had done the majority of it moving around so this worked very will in getting everything level and parallel. I look forward to watching a video where you build some...
Take care.
Paul,,
Gday Paul, I see your not far off 500 subs, that’s awesome, the riser blocks are a must have I think, they have a lot of benefit from getting the twist out of the bed to making it much easier to clean, great job mate and it was good to see some chips under the lathe, take care, cheers Matty
Hi Matty,
Thanks for watching... Yes not far off 500 now, I am very grateful to everyone who subscribes....After fitting the raiser blocks it became very clear that they are a must rather than a nice to have... I am spending more time at the workshop and getting more familiar with the Myford, which is good.
Take care.
Paul,,
Hey Paul
Just found your channel, from your comment the other day congratulations on reaching 500 subs
Hi Matt,
Many thanks for visiting and subscribing... 500 clicked over today which is very exciting. I look forward to seeing more of your video in the future...
Take care.
Paul,,
They worked well in leveling your lathe, Paul. When I saw riser blocks on your video title, I was actually thinking of the machined blocks under your headstock and tailstock to increase turning capacity. I think that Enco offered those as a Unimat accessory.
Hello Daniel,
Yes the Unimat SL's do have a riser block as an accessory... I don't have one yet... I should be back on the SL restoration towards the end of the month...
Thanks for watching.
Paul,,
Paul, nice lathe ! Joe
Hi Joe,
Many thanks for visiting... The lathe is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but is very workable and I have a plan to slowly improve it over time...
Take care.
Paul,,
They look great Paul.
I really need to make some for my s7.
Hello John,
Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to comment...
They really are a good addition and with mine being a long bed variant maybe extra important. With your skills making some should be a breeze...
Take care.
Paul,,
That worked out good.
Hello Steve,
I am very pleased with the outcome... It is nice to have the lathe relatively level and a lot easier to clean the swarf away... Thanks for watching.
Take care.
Paul,,
That is a very nicely-cared for lathe, it looks in great shape. As for the blocks, not sure how tall you are or how high the work bench is (please forgive me if you mentioned it in an earlier video, I have the memory of a goldfish since having kids) but I found that adding a bit of height to my lathe made it much more comfortable to use.
Hello Everett,
The lathe is very original but does have a few minor problems that need addressing, which I will do over time... I am 5'6" so things don't have to increase to much before they become a problem - lol, but the current setup is very good...
Take care.
Paul,,
G’day Paul. Am I right to understand the risers are not standard fitment, without them I’d drag my knuckles each time I turn the travel wheel and how are you suppose to clean under it without them. Well done with your methodical way of setting it up on the risers, car jacks do come in handy.
Cheers
Peter
Hello Peter,
It would appear that the lathe did not come with the raiser blocks but they came with the Myford steel cabinets... Mine did not come with the lathe.
It does seem a little strange to not supply them with the lathe.
Take care.
Paul,,
that lathe really looks clean and well taken care of,, I know everyone wants the lathe very level,, but I never knew why that is so important,,, can you tell me why that is critical?
Hello Vernon,
I did spend quite a while cleaning the lathe when I first got it which did expose quite a lot of ware but I don't really know how much is expected for a lathe made in 1966.
Having the lathe level is important to try and avoid any twisting of the bed leading to misalignment of the headstock and tailstock, that could lead to unwanted tapers being turned.
Thanks for watching.
Paul,,
And think of all the extra chips you can store on the bed now ;-)
Any idea at the weight of this machine? ..
I hadn't noticed the interesting look of the QCGB that this machin has before
Hi Craig,
Yes, I will be about the clean the lathe once a year now - lol... No I am not sure of the weight, this one is a bit heavier than the standard one's as it has the long bed and the Tri-Leva gubbins. Thanks for watching.
Take care.
Paul,,
@@TheKnacklersWorkshop I had to look up "gubbins" never heard/seen that word before. Thought it was a typo at 1st..lol. might be my new favorite word :-)
Hi Paul, another job ticked off the list. There's nothing worse than trying to operate a lathe at the wrong height. Regards Kevin
Hello Kevin,
Thanks for visiting... I was surprised how much better it had made the whole setup... I really am happy with how it turned out.
Take care.
Paul,,
just dont seem to be able to get raising blocks for the myford m.l 10, I dont think the twisting aspect come in on that one because it only has one rail bed. May have to make them out of wood.
Hello
Thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment... On the twisting issue my ML7 is the long bed version which can twist a little easier. The ML10's do look more solid, wishing you lots of fun with it.
Take care.
Paul,,
Thank you paul already got a watchmakers lathe, this one I now have is for bushing clock barrels.@@TheKnacklersWorkshop
Paul, yep vid is of much interest, I thought you would use a Jack of some description. I know you are not that far away, one day you will have to come down to me shed and pick up some round stock, as you know, I do come across it regular. I really have to get back to my S7 project. Tfs and for educating me on what a Knackler is. 👍
Hi Ian,
I got the standard Myford Raiser Blocks but some people make their own. John Creasey has just made a very nice set... It would be nice to see your Super 7 going...
Take care.
Paul,,
