R.I.P. Marvelous Marvin Hagler I'm so shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of this incredible fighter. Without question the greatest Middleweight of all time in my mind. My sincere condolences go out to his family and friends at this time.
I feel a lot of boxing fans remember Hagler as a slugger, but he truly was a masterful boxer who excelled in all departments. The best southpaw fighter I’ve ever seen.
The man could shift stance mid-combination, go from southpaw to orthodox while attacking on the front foot and could change angle and trajectory while letting loose a walking hook that'd make Big George Foreman envious. “If they cut my bald head open, they will find one big boxing glove.” -Marvelous Marvin Hagler
Guy really was a complete fighter. I love watching his footwork. Guy sets traps and changes angles so well. Absolutely love how he throws that straight right while stepping through with the momentum changing from orthodox to southpaw.
Everybody knows his toughness, his power and switch-hit, but it was the footwork and underrated defense WITH the great offense that made Marvin the perfect, all-around fighter.
Well done on a great piece! Too many casual fans just see the Hearns and Leonard fights and have Marvelous Marvin pegged as a face first slugger. By that point his skills had eroded so badly and he had to rely on the tools he had left ... his long distance engine and iron chin. But in his prime I’m talking Sibson, Scypion, Minter, Antuerfermo etc. He masterfully dismantled those guys. Definitely the best switch hitter of all time in my eyes. He made it look effortless and could transition so seamlessly.
SPIDERM0OSE Leonard only took that fight after 26-0 26 knockouts Mugabi had a War with him; Marvin practically begged for the fight in 1982 and Ray knew it wasn’t winnable back then. So he retired stayed fresh and waited for Marvin to pass his sell by date. Marvin in his prime, there is no escape. Ray could run around when he lost a step. But had it happened 5 years earlier; Marvin is going to close that gap and cut the range and force you to fight and trade punches with him. Duran, Hearns all those guys experienced it. Not to say Ray couldn’t have won because he stood his ground and fought a war against Duran in Montreal. But as for Tommy, they could run that fight back 100 times and Marvin would win every time. Everyone respected Tommy’s right hand even in fights he had trouble in like Leonard and Benitez; those guys stayed shy of the right hand and respected it. Marvin was the first in his career that had no respect for his power. Marvin has even said he saw fear in Tommy’s eyes when that first right hand landed on top of his head. He said he wanted him to land it again so he could see his power wasn’t going to do anything. Tommy had no idea what to do after that point. He was taught to deliver dynamite punches by Manny. But that wiry frame was not built to eat a sustained beating. It was only a matter of time once the right hand didn’t work as it was against Barkley.

It's a damn shame we don't have a meticulously detailed book or Instructional about Marvin's boxing style. Today's "switch hitters" (southpaws who *sometimes* go Ortho) don't have that fluidity Marvin had. He hunted dudes down no matter which way they went. When they thought they angled/ pivoted out they'd meet a power punch/combination. When they backed up he caught them with leaping punches. His style is truly one of a kind and it's nearly tragic we'll never really know how he did it.
Marvin was truly the perfect boxer. I can't think of a single attribute that wasn't flawless. Granite chin (never legitimately knocked down in his career), great defensive skill, could be a technical boxer when needed, could brawl when needed, fought in both South paw and orthodox, always perfect conditioning and his worth ethic was top notch.
