If I understood you correctly, the subjects taught at JNU don't fetch jobs easily, and the students coming here from across India are mostly not from moneyed families. My question is: how does this university prepare them to support their families once they move on? Our entire education system needs to be changed really! I'm not saying that education should be job-oriented. On the contrary, there should be "professional/technical training" with education for the sake of knowledge being separate from it.
A major problem with our education system is that we want world-class facilities in our universities and colleges but don't want to spend on it. If you compare an average American university, the undergraduate fees per year will be at least 20,000 dollars (14 lakh INR). I understand that we are a low-income country and I'm not saying that we need to increase the fees at the level which it is unaffordable, but we need to generate enough funds to ensure that Universities can spend on infrastructure, research and teaching staff. It is not uncommon for students to take loans and study because they WILL be able to pay it back in a few years. This happens in BITS where the fees is ~25 lakh for 4 years and even the IITs. The myriad of a socialist entity is not practical and our government doesn't have a bottomless piggy bank. The money has to come from somewhere. If you look at the infrastructure of government universities, the state of the buildings is deplorable. If we want to be a superpower, we have to focus more on our educational system!
So its our Politician job to Formulate policies and education Model so that investment can come. Besides Our colleges have not such infra that we demand as fee as World class universities.
US is not the only successful country in the world. Germany is a major technological power as well and their university education is FREE (even for international students). Japan and Korea are also major powers in world. Korea's Samsung dominates the world with their smartphones. You have to look at the GDP/capita to education cost ratio.
@@reardelt Yes it is true that the German education is free. They pay ~40% income tax there. So basically people pay the amount after they start earning, isn't it? Would our people be okay with ~40% taxation? Also, due to the large difference in size, I don't think that Germany is an apt comparison. Look at the C9 group of universities in China. They commonly rank in top 50 around the world and education isn't cheap :). Maybe a model like Singapore is better for our country. They say that all engineering and medicine graduates must work in the country for 3-6 years (depending on the program), after their studies. So these students essentially pay back the subsidies in taxes.
@@adhimahajan There is no issue paying either 40% tax or 10% tax. Germans and Scandinavian countries have high taxes for years and they are not failed-states. It's a choice a country has to make - be a low-tax entrepreneurial society (like the USA) or a high tax egalitarian society like Scandinavia. US education system is not perfect. It has a few flaws such as high-cost. Germany's education system is also flawed that it doesn't encourage entrepreneurship. No system is perfect.
Fee hike and the eminence of JNU is being preached here. A hall of eminence is not something media organisations disseminate but the scholarly works - not lectures at some workshops on paid junkies - through well recognised publications on topics of interest that the university is well known for. Learning is seeking of enlightenment and not by fees you pay. When someone spends 8-years full time to earn a PhD degree literally paid by the Indian taxpayer -and ironically unavailable for public discourse - we begin to wonder. Their saviours are political masters - Afzal Guru, Kashmir, historians of a breed Promilla Thapar - who need attestation from Noam Chomsky to sustain their thoughts. This shows lack of conviction on the subject. But let’s move ahead. Learning is not by propping unlikely students- those seeking learning - so that the grim employment market is not exhibited. The exchequer has to subsidise everything from farmlands to manufacturing to sustaining business. I have a right to criticise as all through from my university career I have worked by way up to earn and score 4-superior degrees and often sit back and wonder if students in this country can think beyond riding the shoulders of political affiliations and seek enlightenment. Hearing a sensible man likeYogenadra Yadav makes me realise the utter and bitter truth - a heavy dosage of need based education has become a necessity. Those who want to be thinkers will come out of them in isolation, grow and contribute to earning the nation laurels.
No it shouldn't be. And India has lots and lots to do like the Kashmir issue, black money, corruption , Pakistan issue and all that before making education free of cost. Pls note..... there are very less countries in this world providing education as cheap as India is providing. At an average of rs. 1.5 lac an individual can complete their graduation in India which is very very cheap if you take that in factor compared to other countries. Not talking about JNU and DU.
