  • NOTE FROM TED: While some viewers might find advice provided in this talk to be helpful as a complementary approach, please do not look to this talk for medical advice. We've flagged this talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, because it appears to fall outside TEDx's content guidelines. This talk contains sweeping claims around early childhood development and epigenetics that are not supported by sufficient scientific evidence. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com...
Sergio Pecorelli unveils his most recent research studying the environmental impacts on early life, from conception to 24 months. This fascinating talk highlights the critical benefits to lifelong health these first 1,000 days of life have on physical, mental, and emotional health. Sergio Pecorelli received his Medical Degree cum Laude at the University of Pavia, with his residency in OB/ GYN cum Laude at the University of Milano. After that, he completed his Fellowship in Pelvic Surgery at Mayo School of Medicine with a PhD in Gynecologic Oncology Research. His research has focused on female cancer and the implementation of primary and secondary prevention actions. Among other awards, he has received the Gold Medal for Public Health Services from the President of the Republic of Italy. He serves as part of the scientific committee of the Italian Olympic Sports Medicine Federation and is President of the Giovanni Lorenzini Medical Foundation.
He initiated, with an international team, a first-of-its-kind research project, called “The First 1000 days of Life”, aiming at studying 1500 pregnant women, their babies and the fathers of these babies. The study observes environmental influence on future health and wellness of these babies and their future generations. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Being hungry or exposed to stress or abuse during this time can have a lifelong effect on a child's development. An unsafe or unhealthy environment in the first 1,000 days can affect a child's physical health in later life too.

I totally agree with this man. I've worked in child care for a long time and you can see the difference in the infants and toddlers whose parents clearly put in the time and effort before birth and after... However, I have noticed in my years that those who have had the best start pretty much directly correlates with higher socioeconomic backgrounds... So I wonder, with wages continuing to stay stagnant and the like - how are we meant to make sure the majority are given the opportunity to bring children into this world with the best possible start, when society makes it near impossible...

With the amount of children we have in foster homes these days I can only imagine how helpful it would be to understand the complexity of all this for future adoptive parents - could really help with holistic approaches in healthcare for these kids.

I remember playing music to my baby bump, and now I'm glad to know it may have contributed to a lower risk of autism. Music truly is powerful.

Thinking about this stuff makes my heart ache for all those babies who spend the first 18 months or so in orphanages just... never being held or cherished. I can't imagine how that impacts the psyche as they grow up.

A beautiful talk, that everyone should listen to, it all begins before we understand it begins. And we all need to be part of making it better.

Reflecting on my time as a single dad during those early years. It wasn't always easy, but knowing that those moments shaped my child's future health and well-being makes it all worthwhile. They turned out amazingly and I'm so proud.

In the study of Oneness, the practice of rebirth allows for a return to that time of conception, and in that allows for a chance to free oneself from the chains of a pregnancy that was unwanted, uncared for or simply filled with trauma.
