Any guitarist I've spoken to has started after being awed by something that not only is very nice to listen to, but is at least somewhat technical. You can be as technical as you want, but that doesn’t mean that it’s appealing. If that were the case, jazz artists and shredders would be bigger than the cure, nirvana, weezer, deftones, and such, but they’re not. Heck, the singer/guitarist of reel big fish has said that plenty of people have told him that he inspired them to start playing guitar lol.
