  • Maybe half a year ago from this date I had wanted to make a video about MTV"s Liquid Television. I interviewed an assortment of animators, did some deep research, but unfortunately the subject was so important to me I didn't trust myself to do it right. One of the people I interviewed was animator and director Eli Noyes. While the recording of our interview unfortunately was lost due to a recording error, me and Eli stayed in touch occasionally.
During the project, he sent me a collection of commercials he had directed (and sometimes animated) in the past, along with some of his short films.
Unfortunately, though I wish I could have talked to him more, Eli passed away this week. To celebrate his work, which has inspired me, I've decided to share what he shared with me.
Eli can be seen as the sleeping man in the first MTV countdown bumper, along with being the voice of the "Wow!" MTV bumper, which was fully animated by him. The clay Nickelodeon bumper was also fully voiced and animated by Noyes, and is extremely reminiscent of his style and beginnings as a clay animator.

The argument can be made that times were happier then, but it's hard to tell if these ads were an influence on or a reflection of how unaware society became in the 80s. Or maybe our parents were just better at sheltering us from the grime of "the real world".
