Not like the COD:WWII, this game is in line with COD:WAW and some console release only of the WW2 COD games, that is, the campaign is just straight up documentary, the cutscene (obviously) is also from a documentary. Back then, they know that what's important in a WW2 game is not the character and the story, but what's really happening in history. In Soviets campaign, you can feel a vibe of holding up to survive, and taking a revenge to the invader (one of the mission really make this kinda obvious when one of your comrade start shouting while firing an MG), and don't forget, it's all for The Motherland. The British campaign gives you a sense of that these soldiers is already battle weary, and exhausted, and a bit frustrated, but also need there's a need to keep fighting (or it just me, but McGregor complaints in their whole campaign kinda give me this conclusion. There's also one moment in Tobruk (or El Alamein?) where the NPC start talking about one of their comrade who just lost one of his leg and he must be sent home, and another NPC comments that he is a "lucky bastard"). While the American campaign gives you a sense of heroism and standing up to your duty, the last mission really kinda makes this obvious. Some mission plays in non-linear way where you given a set of objective and it's up to you which one you want to complete first. One of the mission give you objective to clean up a village, with several building is occupied by the enemy. You have to be careful here when entering the door because it's easy to get killed here. Combine this game with Sound Mods that give a more louder and meaty sound to the gunshot (or the better use *Merciless Mod* that basically turn this game to COD: WAW but without the dismemberment because this is engine limitations), a bit of visual a tweaks (either using mods, or just manual Reshade, or even better a GPU-based effect if you can afford that), play it in Hardened or Veteran difficulty (or just the easiest difficulty if using Merciless Mod), and you will get a visceral WW2 game.
