      Moody 422 (1987) , Gallagher Skippers' Plan CDN $1275,-/Year , $1.350,- deductible , $135 K replacement value , $2.000 K Liability).
Annual insurance (for a sailboat) should be around 1% of the boat's replacement value.

I have a 1983 Catalina 36 MK1, and I'm insured through Progressive. I pay $1150 a year for $500k liability, comprehensive, and some other coverages - I added the coverage for towing, jump starts, fuel for the extra $30 (for a little over $0.50 a month that seems worth it). BTW: My boat is moored along the Connecticut River.

Geez that’s pretty good. I’ve been insured by progressive for years on my vehicles but when I tried to add my 23’ center console boat with $50k worth of coverage they quoted me $5,800 a year. For a boat I only use 10 times a year nah.

Hey. That is not a good idea. Displacement hulls only go a certain speed based on the hull. For your boat that is approx. 6.2kn. Adding power won't change that because the hull cannot plane. Are you asking if you can put an inboard engine inside the boat instead of an outboard?

My little 20' nordica thinks she's 30' but don't have the heart to tell her any different... any who she's out on the hard right now on the north tip of Cape breton Island and fully insured with the cooperators. I don't know how much it costs me but I think it's not too much because my wife still talks to me, and she pays all the bills. I made voyages on my 34 and 35 foot boats. I never thought of insurance. I had no broadcast radios, and GPS didn't exist. I knew a few yachties who disappeared at sea in the late 70s. If the sun and horizon weren't visible, we became increasingly uncertain as to our position. We had no way of knowing what the weather would bring. Aside from having good charts, we might as well have been sailing centuries earlier. Sometimes the charts weren't so good, either. The positions of the atolls of the NW Pacific weren't known with any great certainty, and the currents are strong and erratic there. These factors led to some harrowing experiences.

After reading the comments, I'm thinking I have a great bargain on liability insurance:
    - 1988 Island Packet 38, cruised between FL and ME
    - Liability only: 300k / Fuel Spill $1M / Uninsured Boater $300k
    - Towing & Assistance $3k / incident
    - Cost went from $380 annually in 2021 to $452 in 2022
    - Ive had this policy with BoatUS/Geico since 2001 with no claims

    1983 - Bristol 35.5CB - Progressive.
This is a sweet boat, loads of beautiful interior wood work, shallow draft with the center board up, does great in both light and high wind, and fairly fast too. Rock solid construction. Galley is a bit small, but the 1984 version has a larger U-shaped kitchen.

I personally went and looked at the PS 37 in Redwood City. It was indeed only worth 22K. It needed re-powering, new rigging and sails if you intended to actually take into the Ocean. Puttering around the SF Bay would have been fine but the previous owner was a live abort and didn't sail much. He had moved to Seattle and needed to dump the boat.

State Farm offers cruisers insurance on most vessels subject to only two caveats: You are only insured in the US and Bahamas waters or on routes between, and that your boat is strictly non-commercial. There is no restriction on when you have to be where, so you don't have to relocate for hurricane season if you don't want to. Rates are usually between 1% and 1.5% of the limits of liability annually. I don't yet have a boat, I'm shopping, but that is the gist of the info I got from my insurance agent.

I would love to see a video (you may have done one already) on purchasing/renting/finding a permanent slip to keep your boat in a good location that allows travel to and from the states when work demands you return back. Would love your feedback on this. We are in the process of purchasing a pristine 1976 Cabot 36 from a wonderful couple who have owned and cared for it like museum piece for 40 years! Stored every year in a custom built garage on their property. In spite of this we are having a hard time finding insurance for both Canada, the U.S. and the Caribbean from a single insurer.

I have a Beneteau Oceanis 350 1989, second owner picked her up in 1995, sailed 7200 nm on her all the way up too Bangor Maine down too the Cape. She is the owners version with the shoal 4’ draft wing keel 28 hp Volvo 21 gallon tank, only have 750 hours on her engine. Installed a fresh water back wash for the through hull so I also layup the engine every time , so no growth in the heat exchanger and corrosion down to a minimum in the Elbow, installed a 120amp alternator and an 8D and 4d and starter battery and 85$ hand crank, which I had too use once. It was hard but it worked. Basically my summer house, turned my boys too men. She is on the hard in Greenport, planning her refit. She has air, Frdge , two Freezers, we would take off the Month of August, and plan our trips, she is a very fast boat and points real high. Have been in ruff seas where waves broke at my lower spreaders. The item that we would always run out of is water, water makers at the time very expensive, so that will be part of the refit, a solar arch, and soft solars for the dodger and Bimini, State Farm is my insurance, I was a pilot before plus took my six pack in the day, crewed the liberty cup race for the American Team, as well as other races too Bermuda when I was Young BC (before Children) tactics came real a few times running from weather north of Province, it was so bad I was beating Carvers, was almost planning her with her rails in the water on the aft port beam reach from hell doing 12 knots running away from a Green storm , which later produced water spouts. Yup that is 5 above hull speed but she was all out of the water wear her winged keel and a bit of the hull was in the water with no helm was steering with the sails. Could have sailed to Chicago that day the leeward side was so hard it was like concrete and her pitch and yaw stayed firm like she was a gyroscope, going up and down the following seas with all of the same angles the sails where flying her. Often I did the Wednesday night races in the sound when we kept her in Huntington. We always wanted too cruise more in the Chesapeake, and always the Caribbean , without a water maker a big Nojoy. Now with just the wife, was thinking of refit then make a try in our retirement.. Bravo Zulu on your Channel.

Interesting as we just recently went through this insurance drill because our marina required we have a $1M both liability & accident. People fret over manufacturers and interior layouts but at the end of the day it's about the experience and capability of the Skipper. Seems like half of the sailing community are lifestyle dreamers, while tommy salt is bouncing his tiny worn out McGregor to the Bahamas every weekend. I'll never pay more than $1000 per linear foot for a sub 40 ft sailboat, but I'll sell you mine after I find something better. 😉

Insurance is mandatory? I guess in this day and age….. of course that complicates my dream of dropping out of society for three years to sail the South Pacific. I probably need to figure another $3,600 for three years insurance into my dream☹️ This dream of mine sure is troubled with hurdles. Of course I’ll lose my tail on a boat since it’s value will only exist if you have a buyer. I will expect to lose 50% on that.

1986 Pearson 303, Geico (Boat US), about $750 / year; 1 million liability and $20K agreed value. Berthed in Warwick, RI. We insured that starting in 2018. This past Spring, I asked them about insuring a 2001 Jenneau Sun Odyssey (it would have been 21 years old at the time) for 90K. They told me the price was just a bit above the top they would allow on a boat of that age. In the end I didn't buy it anyway, but it's a data point I guess.

This was sometime back but I wasn’t sure if their boats US it was a very good policy that had a lot of international coverage. In the 1990s and ran about $300 a year I bought the boat to Catalina 30 and they even supplied me with a survey.

My ancient, worthless, piece of junk, slower than a petrified sail, but man do I love it 1974 Coronado 23 is insured through Progressive. The cost was reasonable. I sail mostly in a lake in Georgia. Good episode. Thanks, man.

You should better define what you mean by 35 feet. For example, the Pacific Seacraft 37 is a fine boat, but it's less than 28 feet at the waterline. My Nonsuch 30 is a foot longer at the waterline and a foot wider as well. My cabin is nearly as large and the cockpit much larger.
