I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but I've watched probably 20-30 episodes of this now and there is such a difference between the British episodes and the American episodes. In the American episodes you can definitely tell that Victoria and the families have been coached on what to say. The British episodes feel so much more natural and organic. I also feel like more British families are willing to accept responsibility for their dog's behavior (i.e., "I'm the reason why my dog does this") whereas more of the American families seem clueless about their dog's behavior.
As an American, I can wholeheartedly say Americans are the #1 excuse makers ever lol

A big part of terrier's charm comes from being small dogs with big attitudes, though that also makes them rather tricky to work with.

Westies are really amazing dogs. One of those breeds that once u have had one, u will generally always have one. Recently lost both of my westies within like 2 months of eachother. Absolutely heart breaking. We are waiting a while before getting another westie. I'd like to rescue one
Noah is so much like my fox terrier Ernie! Except for the licking. Hats off to these people living with 3 male terriers!

Oh dear, there's a Westie in my neighbourhood who is this aggressive. He attacked my dog, a Bichon, when I first adopted him. But my dog was found on the streets, he knows how to fight, so he defended himself quite well. 😄

Noah was full of anxiety which was the fault of both of the owners. He really wasn't a bully, but the other dog suffered because of it just the same.

I just adopted a two year old yorkie and he is definitely a big package in just 6 pounds! Very sassy and stubborn lol
Not leaving resources around is of course a great first step to avoid the rehearsal of that behaviour, but not "easily solved" 😆 wrong choice of words lol that is just the beginning of a long training and management process.

aggression is a response behaviour, she focuses on giving other options of responses, ie turn away and other things. helping the dog have different responses. the aggression will subside when it does not feel insecure and threatened.
My adopted Westie, Sophie, is obsessed with licking as well.
Find out why she is anxious. Is she getting the proper exercise? They are working dogs as are all terriers, and need two 30 mins walking daily. They don't do well laying around the house all day. She may have had a bad previous owner also.

@Heatherylou1990 exactly, they showed her doing obedience with him at the beginning. He's well trained but at the bottom of the pack.
Poor handling leads to problems. I have a Westie who has excelled in obedience and agility and have had many other dogs and my Westie is amazing.
TBH that Westie seems like the normal and expected Westie attitude to an alien younger creature being added to the household. Minus the licking, that is in fact worrying
I won't say worrying, it's just one of the many forms of mouthing (I'm not a native English speaker, I hope is the correct term), a rather common self soothing response to the stress factor you described so well 😊

small dogs' owners usually don't feel the need to train nor educate them, because... well, in the words of many of those owners, "they're small, so they only can do small damages" 🤷♀

It's not normal even for a "Big dog in a little body" to make protection over his food or toys. So what about those Big dogs who don t do that ? It s just a effortless training because he is little
is turn away the same as leave it? looks like it to me but then why change the cue? also wish they would teach the other dogs the cues as its not gonna work so well if just one dog turns away but the other isn't as it could still lead to a fight in theory. just my own personal thoughts on it. the rest is good. i totally agree with the retractile leash issues. i don't understand why they are so popular still but that's just me.
Sometimes trainers use different words because the original cue has a negative association. I'm sure they got more instruction than was captured in the video.
Could be that the owners preferred saying "turn away" over "leave it." It's their dogs and they're going to have to say the commands all the time. Doesn't really matter what the phrase is, it's a dog, they don't understand words. The command could literally be "klondike bar" and it'd still work just as well, because you're simply teaching the dog "when I say these words, you do this action"
I think it's the new version of "leave it", have seen it used in a lot of the new videos. I personally prefer the "leave it" command, but that's probably because I've been using it for years lol 😆
@@m6666 the goal is to keep communication the least confusing, which means that "overlapping" commands are to be avoided as much as possible.
the phrasing is conventional, really, it's just what's more convenient in the specific case.
for example, our Astro is very curious of new things, and his first approach is tasting them 😅
so we almost immediately associated "leave it" to the concept of "don't eat that random sh*t on the ground, is bad for you"...
we got him from a bad case of neglect, and in the first few months at home he used to sooth his separation anxiety through mouthing (mainly munching my husband shoes, preferably with his foot inside 🤷♀).
to avoid confusion, instead of "leave it" we decided with his trainer to use the command "drop".

Licking behavior such as this can also be physiological as oppossed to psychosomatic.
GI discomfort ( "acid belly", nausea, tenesmus, etc) can be underlying here.
It can be difficult to tease out the reason.
I have been an owner of four Westies. They are stubborn at times, but from the beginning they need to know who’s in charge. Once you allow them that they can get away with things, you’ve lost control. You need to be leader of the pac!
Agreed! I have a sweet little 13 year old Westie and she is soo obedient and also great with people.

I love Westies but they can be true Terrors lol. When I worked primarily with pets during college we would have to place our regular Westies with the bigger dogs. They would completely dominate the smaller dogs...even as puppies. Westies ran small group with Pugs and French Frenchies coming in as close 2nds.
They are all beautiful.

I'm curious though. For the licking problem, if he's self soothing that way, wouldn't a lick matt help too? Having some meals via lick matt on top of all this other training?
That’s a good question, it seems a licking mat might help.
Licking is the symptom of stress for this dog. So you don't want to enforce the self soothing and put on a bandaid, you need to address the stressfactor (the reason for licking), which they did by building on the relationship with Mel
Also with a resource guarder you don't want to introduce another problem that can create more fights.

I have found those extension leads are useless you have no control over an unruly dog and you have giant handles to hold on to making giving rewards almost impossible especially holding 2 - i got a very deep rope burn when had grab my very large puppy back. I got different lengths of lines up to 50 ft when they earned that much freedom.
I don’t see a difference btw the American and British show. It’s families asking for help because they want a good life for their dogs.

Is it really torture to a dog to put a muzzle on them? I am trying to train my dog to not be so aggressive but my mom won't let me use a muzzle or even a vibrating collar when we go on a walk
It's not if you let your dog get used to the muzzle with positive methods 🙂 Start with feeding him treats from the muzzle (putting my nose in a muzzle = good thing)

It's not if you use a basket muzzle so they can pant and drink water. However, it's just a tool to keep other dogs and people safer. It doesn't address the problem or the dog's anxiety. You have to combine it with training.
No its a safety measure. Untill you know your dog you should use a muzzle
So I'm a veterinary assistant. We will put the muzzle on if a dog tries to go at us or bite or just showing super nervous and anxious energy just in case since they will most likely attack us out of fear and this just doesn't give them a chance and keeps us safe.
Dogs will fight the muzzle sometimes but a lot of times they eventually give up out maybe because it isn't worth the energy, it kind of keeps them not really calm but at least under control.
Like someone else mentioned it isn't really a complete solution to their aggression but sometimes it's the only option especially if the pet has attacked before and won't seem to change. Muzzles are good to use when doing nail trims or bathing if your pet is a spicy fur baby, though you can help them get used to things like this by touching their toes and getting them used to whatever you are doing from a young age or just working to make it positive.
You can also use a gentle lead which does some of the same thing as a muzzle which is controlling the mouth and head especially on a walk.

I believe if you don’t have to muzzle a dog you don’t have to because I believe that is a torture to a dog they know how much you love them and how much you care about them and if they don’t it’s because you don’t know how to show it

*moderator* Muzzles are very important safety equipment for specific situations to keep everyone safe and you can actually train a dog to enjoy wearing a muzzle so it is not something they will be stressed about if it's ever needed. Basket muzzles are best because you can feed a dog treats through them and when conditioned properly, a dog will happily stick their face in, just like a dog may get excited when they see their harness to go for a walk. If you do not train a dog to like wearing a muzzle, it can be stressful for them.
Hope this helps clarify the best ways to use muzzles and how they can be perceived as a good thing to a dog.
