  • Trailer wiring can be one of the most intimidating components of your towing setup, but it doesn't have to be. Most of us aren't electricians, but that doesn't mean wiring a trailer is beyond us! We'll walk you through the vehicle-side wiring process for 7-pin plugs, so you can get your trailer up and running in no time.

    If you use a 4 flat to 7 blade adapter, do the brakes, backup light, and 12 volt work, or are you missing out on that functionality? I'm deciding if I need to take out my 4 flat and replace with 7 blade or if the adapter would accomplish everything. I just got an RV to tow and am having trouble figuring out why the brake and turn signals are not working. I am using an adapter. Going to test a few things tomorrow with the trailer plug, and the truck itself. Thanks

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Once the 4 pole of an adapter like # 37185 is plugged in, and the white wire is grounded to the tow vehicle, you'll have lighting function only. the yellow wire taps into the reverse lamp circuit, the black wire for 12-V accessory power connects to the positive battery terminal and the blue wire connects to the blue wire exiting the rear of the brake controller. We offer the whole kit as part # ETBC7 which includes the adapter, wire, circuit breakers and hardware- everything needed for a successful install.

    What harness are you using in this video? It's exactly what I need to replace my old damaged 7 way, but I can't find it on the website and there's no link in the description.

      Jake used the # HM40975-11998 connector/harness, which you can check out by using the link we've provided below:

    Question about the red wire/brake wire. I have an existing four pin working in place. Bought the four to seven adapter for my new trailer. Do I need to connect the red wire brake to the controller? Is it redundant? Or does the red wire feed to the brake controller tell it to activate? I would prefer to skip the red wire, can I simply provide 12v 20amp to controller under dash and send the blue wire to the seven pin? Trailer has no reverse lights and I am not adding them.

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  ปีที่แล้ว

      What vehicle are you working with? In the video, the blue vehicle wire was the brake output which attaches to the blue wire on the trailer connector harness that we show and the orange vehicle wire is the 12V feed to the trailer which attaches to the black wire on the trailer connector harness. The white harness wire is the ground, the red is left turn/stop, the green is right turn, the brown wire is the running lamps and the yellow is the reverse lamps. You can see the color code chart for the replacement 7-way connector/harness on this page:

    What I find confusing is when a blue wire is for "brakes". But, the brakes use the left and right turn signal wires, and I think a higher voltage on that wire, brightens the output of the bulb when you hit the brakes. So, what does the "stop" wire do? Is that for electric brakes, and the signal causes the brakes to engage?

    your wire tester looks pretty awesome. Does it poke thru the insulation or work like and A/C testor which just senses the voltage?

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The exact tester shown is no longer available, but it's very similar to the # PTW2993 which we do offer. It does pierce the wire insulation, but the hole is very tiny.

    where is the vid to wire it from scratch??? I just used a pre existing plug on a new used truck i just purchased. A 2000 freightliner fld120. My issue is that everything works but it has no brake lights. Everything on the truck works fine and I ran a test light on the ground at the pre existing plug and it seems fine. Blinkers work fine but no brake lights. Cant figure it out.

    Ok what about vehicles that don’t have plug installed from factory

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The best way to do this will depend on whether your trailer has brakes or not. The first step for either scenario will involve installing a functional 4-pole trailer connector. Once that's done, if the trailer does NOT have brakes, you can simply install a 4-pole to 7-way adapter like # 37185. Plug this into the 4-pole, ground the white wire and and bundle the blue, black and purple wires up out of the way. If your trailer has brakes and you'd like them functional, you'll need a brake controller and the # ETBC7 install kit which includes the 31785 adapter in addition to the functioning 4-pole. If you'd like specifics, let us know the year, make and model of the vehicle in question and let us know if the trailer has brakes. The linked product pages have some videos that you'll find helpful.
