    If you're getting a weird spread with an led bulb, put the halogen bulb back in the original socket that came with it and try to find out the right distance a light source needs to shine upon the reflector inside the housing itself. If the led bulb is retracted back from that point, due to any reason, you'll get a blinding light spread from the reflector. But if you further push the led bulb inside the housing just so that it shines at the right spot inside the reflector, it casts a perfectly sharp beam without any blinding streaks of light.
    This is what I learned while modifying the headlight on a stock Honda 100cc Economy class bike.

      @@chacholiades you should try Philips or Novsight in reflectors! They should produce exactly the same beam pattern and hotspot in the middle. I run Novsight LEDs in my car in reflectors. It’s not mega perfect but it leaves the cut off line and not dazzling oncoming cars. You should try these bulbs!

      How did you modify the headlight to change the distance between the reflector bowl and the led. Did you shorten the led or push away or put closer the reflector bowl from the led bulb itself?

    Really it just depends on the LED bulb configuration, and depends on the housing. I swapped LED's into my old Ford truck and the low beams are much brighter and make the road more visible than the halogens. No question. However, the high beams are essentially unusable because they scatter and disperse the beam so badly. So in that case it's a tradeoff at best. I plan to stick with the LED's for now just cause I've got little need for high beams on the reg. Cheers

  • @paulacabbo466
    @paulacabbo466 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    it all depends on the led bulb and there's hundreds of different ones, you need one that can adjust on two axis forward and backwards and rotational its the only way to get the focus correct. the halogen bulb let no light go foward the light is aimed back towards the reflector and theres a hood over the highbeam filament to stop light from going too high and blinding drivers, leds are getting a much better design now but they're not quite there yet

  • @davidriley9194
    @davidriley9194 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bluudy!! I’ve said exactly what you said “so I think you can get away with these in reflector light” I enjoyed watching this video and You explained it really well and so informative! I have Novsight H7 LEDs for my Golf mk4 in reflector housings and they come out very nicely! Their nice and their white! I rarely get flashed by one or two cars as I had LEDs for a year almost and I didn’t have any problems and the beam pattern isn’t perfect as they are slightly blurry but if they are installed correctly and without dazzling oncoming cars. What I’m slightly worried about is when I take my car for an MOT and I got a feeling they will fail on LED headlights on “Headlamp light source and lamp not compatible” it is aiming and set correctly and it’s not aiming too high or too low. If it does fail on headlights then I swap them out and I can put the LEDs back in afterwards. I wouldn’t fancy put HIDs in the reflector housing as they are ridiculously bright and blind other road users, they’re better in projector housings if used correctly.
    You should try Philips Ultinon Pro9100 LED or Osram nightbreaker LED as they make really good bulbs and doesn’t scatter the light everywhere at all like cheap shit LED bulbs so. They sound produce exact same beam pattern just like the halogen bulb!

  • @441meatloaf
    @441meatloaf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    LEDs dont blind if you buy the right leds. Always buy leds that have only 1 row of leds because they mimic the same position how filament halogens work and also align it in the right place so it actually reflects in the right direction

    • @anthonylynn1969
      @anthonylynn1969 3 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @benpd9313
    @benpd9313 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    LED bulbs you buy these days are ideal improvements over halogen headlights. It’s as simple as having a bulb with only 2 sides of LED chips, and ensuing the lit sides of the bulb are at 9+3. Yes it’s 400% brighter if you’re within the identical beam pattern to a halogen bulb. But a halogen bulb is also blinding if you look within the beam!
    The older the car the better the LED experience, Canbus just complicated the cheap bulb upgrade life!

  • @SimbaUchihaa
    @SimbaUchihaa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Types of HIDs exist aswell. There's the HIDs for projector housing and HIDs for reflector housing, which is another reason people think they seem ridiculously bright on certain cars.

  • @MrCougar214
    @MrCougar214 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    L.E.D head light bulbs, as the technology stands right now, are actually best suited for reflector housings. H.I.D is still best for projector housings. But no matter which bulbs you use, blinding people is ALWAYS a problem with improper alignment, not bulb type.

    • @HaKa1noSensh1
      @HaKa1noSensh1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's false, L.E.D. are best suited in projector housing when it comes to down road visibility. I'm saying this because I have LED in reflector and in a projector, the projector by far has better visibility and the reflector has about the same visibility as halogen

    • @laszu7137
      @laszu7137 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing is reflector inhirently produces more glare than a projector. There's a limit to how much light you can output out of a reflector. As the glare goes up at the same rate.

    • @davidriley9194

      Problem with the H.I.D bulbs, they are ridiculously bright and end up blinding/dazzling oncoming traffic especially with Range Rover with HIDs as standard when it left the factory, they are so bright and couldn’t see a thing at all at night

    • @MrCougar214
      @MrCougar214 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidriley9194 again, that is an alignment issue. Larger vehicles, like a land rover/range rover, have to have their lights aimed a bit lower that a passenger vehicle because they sit higher. Glaring light is the result of headlights not being aimed ever so slightly to the right(from the perspective of sitting in the car) so they do not blind oncoming drivers.

    • @davidriley9194
      @davidriley9194 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrCougar214 I honestly think when drivers brought the Range Rover/Land Rover, like you said, they need to lower the headlights down cos I don’t think they were set right when it left the factory, aiming far too high cause dazzling oncoming cars and that when I had to flash my headlights to turn their lights down

      Danny Jones hi mate, I used Night Eye H4s bought off amazon - straight fit, plug and play and they fit inside the headlight with the cover able to close without any modifications. Passed an MOT no worries too when angled correctly! I would definitely advise installing LED w501 sidelight bulbs if you’re installing LED dipped/main beam bulbs otherwise you’ll still be stuck with the horrible yellow halogen glow inside the clean, crisp white LED light. I used to get condensation in my headlights with my halogen bulbs because they create a lot of heat whereas these don’t get too hot at all so there’s no temp change inside, thus no condensation!

    While I drive mine I have a lot of trouble with stray light. Two examples: driving at night and I multiple highway signs over a course of hundreds of meters are lit up very good. Second example: standing behind cars and the lights reach their cabin. It’s weak, but it’s there while it shouldn’t
    I installed a new headlights today because the previous one wasnot original and the whole housing was kept together with just a single tierep.

    LED bulbs are just a crapshoot, there's so much variation - some may well work but many more don't, it's not chance since some are clearly better designed than others but the huge variety on offer leads to many being unsuitable for the housing they're in.

    if a much stronger source of light doesn't cause dazzling, why do you think there's a legal limitation of 55W for a headlight bulb. just because your beam seams even, doesn't mean you won't dazzle other drivers. the problem is, when you're passing with another car in the night time, you're forced to look in it and more powerful source of light will dazzle you anyway. this is why modern cars with factory fitted LED reflector headlamps NEVER have their LEDs visible from the outside. if you look into the headlight from the front of the car, you won't see it, it's placed behind the reflector itself. and that's because it's such a strong source of light it can't be placed the same way as halogens are. I do travel a lot in the night time, and it's absolutaley outrageous how some people have no respect for other drivers whatsoever, fitting some dodgy bulbs and not only they're dazzling, but often I can see how little is lit in front of them. please, just stop. if you've got an older car and your lights are no good, don't treat putting stronger bulbs as any kind of solution. get new lights or get your old ones cleaned/reconditioned. it's as if you had your window wide open in the winter and instead of closing it down you'd be turning up your heater.

    pause on 4:24 and compare beam geometry. There is no geometry with LED bulb, its just blob of light, no V shape to it. V shape is important. Also try to pass MOT with those LED lights, would be interesting to know the result.
    Lights are optical devices, not just some dumb flashlight, where brighter is better.
    To see lines, V shape and cut off, shine the lights to white wall from about 10 meters/yards (30 feet) and compare that pattern to LED light. I bet it will go over the line and that means you are blinding other drivers!

      Problem is it is technically an MOT fail as it changes the "type approval" of the car. The beam pattern won't be right in all headlights though.
      There are no regulation LED headlights which you can change the bulb in (they are all sealed and mega expensive) and no regulation was written for them.

    Its not a question of led in reflector housing, of course you can fit them if they fit. As you saw yourself the led had no beam pattern, light was all over.
    The line between top/dark/other set of eyes and bottom/light should be as sharp as possible. That way no stray light ends up in the other guys eyes. If you used a headlight adjusting device youd see the beam pattern is off allot, just like xenon in reflectors. When reflectors were made were designed around incandescent bulbs. Also reflector have a limited light output permitted, just because they are not good at projecting precisely.
    On a side note i have been blinded by more than once by oncoming cars with oem led headlights, man they are bright, and right in your eyes. Those were top line cars, manufacturers care more for the customer they sell their car to.
    My own car has reflector headlight, and i was thinking to get some led h4 for it, wiring is weak/old bulb gets 2v less than battery, but ill live some more with my little candles.

    Your headlights will fill up with dirt, because you can't put the caps back with the LEDs. And it's clearly visible that they shine diffusely on the wall and in your (camera's) eyes, while the halogen is focused. That's because on this chinese led the diodes aren't in the same position as the filament in the halogen so they go out of focus. This is the Main reason they blind, second being outrageous brightness of some diodes. If you want diodes so badly you should consider ones from reputable manufacturers like Osram and Philips.

    If your LED light was 360 as you suggested, it wouldn't work as it would scatter the light in the housing and cause a blinding glare. This has actually been explained extensively by a professional. If you check Headlight Revolution on TH-cam, they explain all the reasons why poorly designed LED lights are bad for the road. What you need is a halogen bulb with 6500 lumens. That is, your light temperature is more whiter then the 4000 lumens halogen you are used to and I noticed that the beam pattern of the OEM halogen differs with the aftermarket LED light you fitted which means that there is no anti glare on your led, so it will cause glare at night. So you couldn't bust the myth because it is not a myth

    Those housings were not made for LED bulbs, you need projectors to properly run LED bulbs. You can clearly see the light dissipate in that housing when you put the LED bulbs in them. You're trying to justify your pre-conceptions that you're able to run them, which is not true.
