Should You Really Put LED Bulbs in Your Headlights?

  • Most people know that putting LED lightbulbs in a halogen headlight housing leads to less than stellar results, and blinding oncoming traffic, but how bad is it really? Are they actually brighter?
I was curious so I decided to find out by comparing halogen lightbulbs, Vivid Lumen LED lightbulbs, generic cheap LED lightbulbs, and OEM projector headlights from a newer truck. I was happy to learn something new, and stoked to be able to share it with you! (PS, this video was not sponsored in any way.)
    Final Results:
    Halogen Bulbs: 83 Lux
    Vivid LED Bulbs: 225 Lux
Cheapo LED Bulbs: 145 Lux @ same location, 360 Lux @ brightest location
2016+ Tacoma OEM Projectors: 158 Lux

Diode dynamics ss3 yellow foglight have been the best light upgrade I've done , paired with a good halogen lowbeam the setup is easy on the eyes and shines far down the road.

Had my led bulb upgrades to my 2015 lifted Scion xB for almost 8 months. No issues.
Which one you might ask? I’m using Lasfit - LD plus switchback. The characteristics of the led bulb design is well made. The led chips matches the size of the halogen coil filament, the heatsink is 36mm with dual ball bearing cooling fan, with an external compact driver.
And the beam pattern is radically awesome. Especially on H11 projector headlights.

Thanks for another vid B! One suggestion would be to compare stock halogen projectors vs led projectors on a 3rd gen. My 2020 OR came with halogen bulbs in the housings and I swapped them for Philips XtremeUltinon H11 bulbs and holy balls, what a difference! Don't have a light meter to test but the cutoff was unaffected and there are no significant hotspots. Pure white light and I love it. No fans in them but they do get fairly warm after prolonged use.

first two nights after putting in LED bulbs, i was getting a few high beam flashes. i pointed them down, problem solved (never been flashed again) - considering how much brighter and high contrast they are compared to the outgoing halogen bulbs, visibility was still superior to halogen even after pointing down

@@360.Tapestry I’m on the edge of good aim and so-so. I got no issues for daily. I get flash using my 3000k golden yellow led low beam projector headlights. Not as bright as pure white 6000k:

@@toyotabrony i have a hard time believing you'd get flashed that often strictly for an amber-ish color - but it could very well be the case. if i had to guess, i'd say the projector lenses have something to do with it, as i've noticed they tend to create a starburst/lens flare effect, even in the direction they're not pointed at. the most important part here is that you're paying attention and have some regard for your fellow drivers, especially if this is happening during inclement weather. all in all, i'm sure you'll figure it out

I used leds. Amazing difference. Night driving, spotting deer way out was great. The beam glowed reflectors way down the road. Now, technically led lights are not DOT approved, Osram makes some. Legally, an accident you can be liable since car wasn't designed for led, blah blah blah. I Did have Sylvania ultra. I popped one in the driver light. Got the Hey can you get some milk now? Ok..OK... I was amazed at the beams on the road. Right was led so lit up the right side as usual and the halogen added a warmer light. It was as if I was driving on high beam. Nobody flashed like they did with my leds. Looks dorky but the blend of light and wavelengths was cool. I am leaving them in and test out on a country road I have to drive on sometimes which made me go led vs the silverstars I was using.

    • @toyotabrony
      @toyotabrony 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

The sylvania - silverstar ultra was my first high performance halogen bulb upgrades 13 months ago. Had them for 5 months and it was a great start. The only halogen bulb upgrades I can recommend.
Than I switch to ked from Lasfit - LD plus switchback. Very well made, much better beam pattern, and u get the best of both worlds for 6000k pure white for clear night and 3000k golden yellow for weather conditions, dark cloudy days, sunrise and sunset. It’s a must have led upgrade from lasfit.
      Worth $100 bucks a pair. 🙏🏼

    • @Johnnygga
      @Johnnygga 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Silverstar Ultra is awesome. It’s as close to HID look you can get without ruining distance vision and bad weather vision. I’ve tried Philips Xtreme Vision and they’re also fantastic, if not better than SSUs. But they didn’t have that “whiter” beam I wanted and the SSUs meet me halfway there so I’m satisfied.
It’s kind of funny, many years ago Silverstar Ultra were trash because the whole bulb was coated in blue. After Sylvania got sued and lost in court, they basically revamped their existing bulbs or they just brought their Osram Nightbreaker bulbs over and repackaged them. Win win though because the Osrams are fantastic.

Great video on why you should NOT run leds in a halogen headlight assembly. You blind people.

    • @toyotabrony

@@toyotabronythere’s no “right type of LED.” It doesn’t exist. You will blind people wether you have a halogen reflector or halogen projector
Physics doesn’t lie, even though you think the beam is spread evenly, or it has a sharp cut off. Bulbs and headlights have expensive equipment run on them for them to be compliant. Engineers don’t eyeball them and are like “wow this looks great!” Lol

Holy shit what the hell type of led bulbs u guys upgraded to? That beam pattern is really bad. That’s definitely will make ur drivers mad for that.
    Stay away from those type.
    I recommended much better options.
    Such as:
    Lasfit,Auxito,Auxbeam,Fahren,
Hikari, Sylvania led, Xenon Depot,Diode Dynamics, S-V.4,VLED’s Micro Evolution, Morimoto, GTR-Lighting, DDM-Tuning, etc etc.
nowadays they make much better characteristics of the led bulbs. With the right type of led chips, the right right heatsink and cooling fan, much cooler after running when it supposed to get hot but it runs cooler, and they have a better reliability.
I recommend Lasfit, auxito, and sylvania led.
Stay away from those horrible no quality led lights like those.
If that happen to me. I will immediately put halogen bulbs back for now, until I pick the right ones.
That never happen to me and thank god I didn’t.
