Very good analogy of Micheal Spinks. Spinks had an unique fighting style giving boxers different looks every round. He turns to the side, shift his body throws punches from difficult angles. However, he was a slow starter which was prime advantage for Mike Tyson who's a ferocious fast starter.
@@gl6996 100 % correct . Younger Holmes would've timed him and got his punches off. Holmes timing wasn't the same here. Just a second to late all the time.
What people forget is that Spinks was one of the 5 best light-heavyweight champions ever. But that division was just such a no man's land when it came to accolades and most importantly, paydays. Many great light-heavyweight champion took a shot at a heavyweight belt and failed. Billy Conn, Archie Moore, and Bob Foster to name a few. But Spinx was the first one to win it. And also this was just right before the cruiser-weight division was formed. So if you were 176 lbs in the early '80's you were a heavyweight. Seems pretty ridiculous now. I think Spinks was 200 lbs for this fight, but he still looks small. Frazier was about 205 in his first fight with Ali, and Holyfield was under 210 when he won it the first time against Douglass.
In Holmes younger years he was the Mike Tyson of his Day. Even Tyson admitted Holmes would have beaten him in his prime. In Tyson's own words "I did not beat the Larry Holmes of Yesterday the Larry Holmes of Yesterday would have killed me". The only thing was missing was Holmes vs Forman . Had Holmes and Forman fought each other in the early 1980's it would have been equal to Ail and Fraser. It's would be like King Kong vs Godzilla had Holmes and Forman fought each other in their prime.
Spinks' was still coming in at just shy of 14 stone which was considerably heavier than Floyd Patterson who also competed in the heavy weight division.
Holmes was getting on here. Even though this was a controversial decision he was very lucky to have gotten past Carl "The Truth" Williams himself just a few months earlier. A great champion who didn't get the respect because he fought in the post Ali - pre Tyson era.
So sick of people saying Holmes doesn't get respect, that is not true. Holmes is just not popular and did not fight a roster of legends. No one ever said Holmes was not a great fighter, he has the best jab ever but people just didn't like him and they did not have to.
I agree. Not that Spinks wouldn’t have given him a hard time with that style, but with Holmes’s speed and conditioning he would eventually catch him. He was just too slow here with his added weight from his peek by this point.
I’m somewhat of a casual, so I don’t give my opinion much weight, but i just think Spinks wasn’t really meant to move up to heavy weight, as well as he did perform against a few opponents. I think prime Holmes manages to KO Spinks in 5.
Unorthodox, creative and effective style in any way by Spinks. Never saw any other fighter throwing these strange righthand triplettes. Spinks used them several times and Holmes might been asking himself if Spinks had 3 fists hammering on him.🥴
Can see why Holmes had a hard time landing on Spinks. Spinks had head movement and foot work. Holmes was used to beating on stationary flat footed heavyweights. Spinks came from the light heavyweight so he was naturally more agile
I didn't get to watch this when it happened. When I heard the results, my initial reaction was, "uh oh -- Larry pissed off the wrong person within the inner sanctum of boxing." However, in re-watching this fight multiple times (and through a clearer lens) all these years later, Spinks won, and likely by more than the 1 point margin on 2 of the score cards. He didn't win on style points, but he consistently scored in ways that Larry didn't seem to have an answer for. It's hard to watch a legendary boxer age in the ring, and that's what happened in this fight.
True. I`ve always believed that many a great fighter has their Achilles heel in the form of an opponent: Ali - Norton; Tyson - Holyfield; etc. Holmes was a truly great champion, but he had no answer for all the problems posed for him by Spinks.
My homeboy won the fight St.Louis was lit...One brother beat Ali and the other one beat Holmes, but Larry Holmes is the most underrated heavyweight champion ever in my opinion...He was truly a great champion that had the misfortune of coming behind Ali.

Granted Spikes did win the first fight. It was close and in the end Holmes slack off and did not put away Spinks when he had the chance. However in the rematch clearly Holmes dominated and won the fight from start to finish and the stupid judges gave it to Spinks.
Hey Richard I'm glad you cleared that up for me because I was young when this fight happen and in my mind I thought that Larry Holmes won the second fight because he was close to Breaking Rocky Marciano record at 48 and 0 cuz I didn't know that Spinks won both of these fights!

Crazy how tyson destroyed these two lads so easily. Shows how good Tyson in the 1980s was. Must be one of the best ever heavyweights. Holmes and sinks were really elite fighters
Holmes was really old when he fought Tyson. Tyson was at his best under Kevin Rooney, then Don King made him fire Rooney and the rest of his training staff; then Tyson's skill stagnated and his bobbing and weaving skills diminished greatly.
@@Shovelhook Quite possibly. Younger Holmes obviously could move around the ring a lot better, but it's not for sure he could have held off Tyson. I think prime Foreman would have held off Tyson just like he destroyed Frazier twice. Foreman was really good at catching punches, and also pushing his opponent on their shoulders to keep them at a distance.
He wouldn't have broken the record, he would have tied it. Also he lost the fight because he lost the fight, he was starting to decline 5 or 6 fights before this one.
@@coryburns834 Yes it's was a sad fight. Sad for Ali and sad for Holmes. It didn't help Larry at all to became popular to beat a sick icon intouchable...
It was his chance to equal Marcianos record of 49-0. And Larry didn't want to do it vs a lower ranked opponent. If Holmes had beaten Spinks in this match I do think he would've retired.
Race played a part in why Spinks won, whites had no intention of a black matching a whites record. Don't act like sports haven't been racially motivated for decades.
The Saddest night in the history of boxing and the end of one of the greatest undefeated streaks in the history of HW boxing. If he had managed to win this fight and retired then and there, Larry Holmes would've joined Rocky Marciano in the Pantheon of Invincible Heavyweights.
No doubt, Larry was great. This was a fateful night for him. The stars were not aligned in his favor. He had the heavy load of tying Marciano and then he went out on a limb saying Rocky couldn't carry his jockstrap which enraged the old time boxing world. (made Larry appear proud and arrogant because Rocky was dead and how can you compare fighters from different eras? And "Pride goeth before the fall) And, also Michael Spinx had "revenge" in the way that Larry beat his brother, Leon. And, Jinx Spinks does his unorthodoxed "gumby" and Larry can't figure it out. Wow, Spinks was just relentless and talkin' and fearless, and floppin' and getting in there and under and around Larry. He fought a great fight and a light heavyweight, to boot. What a nightmare..
Tyson beat Spinks so fast because he was the best fighter in the world at that time. He made Spinks miss and countered with his own bombs. Rooney and Tyson both said after the fight that Spinks came to fight instead of running and hugging. Even Teddy Atlas, a well known Tyson hater gave Spinks credit for coming to fight that night.
I was a little kid when this fight took place. Looking back on it now Michael spinks reminds me of Bootney Farnsworth, the boxer from the movie 'Lets Do it Again'!!!!!
Larry jinxed himself right before this fight because he said Rocky Marciano couldn't carry his jockstrap and I knew right then he was going to lose this fight especially if it came down to a decision because a lot of people didn't like that statement and if he won this fight he would have tied with Marciano record I think 49 & 0
no he said it after the fight. That''s why the judges never allwoed him to be the 3rd boxer in the history to be two times champion ( after patterson and Ali ). This Holmes was close to 36 in this fight. He is one of the best heavyweights ever.

In boxing there are many axioms and one is "Styles make fights". This bout is the perfect example. Holmes was slipping by this time period and Spinks was the man for the job. Similar styles and the similar way they used the ring.
Larry had hit a wall and was fading fast. He'd already lost two fights,(he was given the W but in reality he lost both). Spinks fought a washed up Larry Holmes. There is no way he could have beaten the Holmes from 2 or 3 years earlier.
What is was that Holmes slack off in the first fight. He had four different opportunities to knock Spikes out. In the re-match Holmes beat Spikes's Ass from start to finish but the judges rigged to win for Spikes .
Mike Tyson was a real legend. When he faced Larry Holmes and Mike Spinks, they were petrified with pupable fear. Mike reduced them to rubble. Then came Buster Douglas, the nightmare Tyson would never comment on or discuss.
People say styles make fights, and here is a perfect example of this. Larry is legendary with the right hand however here spinks is super elusive yet aggressive with the combinations of the top. Larry Holmes comes off heavy and unfit(slightly sluggish) with the occasional right hook landing like Vintage Holmes. Here he was out-paced, out-witted and out punched. great fight still.!
Spinks looked like a gnat flying around an Elephants ass the majority of the fight. Annoying the elephant enough that it looked like it wanted to jump off a cliff.
And yet Michael Spinks went up against Mike Tyson and was CLEARLY scared half to death! I can almost guarantee he was thinking "Think of the money...think of the money...!"
Holmes was underrated and disrespected. Holmes wins breaks Marciano record, he the mistake saying hell with him . he could not win even if he wanted to.
Larry won this fight by a close margin. The fight was close, and when this is the case, it always favors the Champ. Larry was robbed for sure. That said, his conduct after the fight was despicable. He did not go out like a Champ should. He was bitter, angry, and really upset about not breaking Marciano's record. I thought Larry was better than this. This said, no one can deny that Larry was one hell of a boxer/puncher and always exciting to watch. He had a long career, filled with many wins, and he "never" ducked no one. I wished he had not fought Tyson at that time of his career. A younger Larry would have been a great, great fight.
Larry himself admitted the fight was close and he might have lost. I think the decision went the right way. I am a big fan of Larry but those Spinks' brothers were a class act.

Imo greatness is given to easily today. Names mean something win or lose… you fought them. Mike Tyson has Berbick, Tucker, Thomas, Spinks, Holmes, Holyfield, Bonecrusher, Tubbs, Ruddock, Golota, Stewart, Lennox etc… all world class opponents of differing success but world class. Virtually all champions. When todays Gen have a list of that many world class opponents we can talk.
Spinks made it hard for Larry because he moved around a lot and had an awkward style of boxing.
Very good analogy of Micheal Spinks. Spinks had an unique fighting style giving boxers different looks every round. He turns to the side, shift his body throws punches from difficult angles. However, he was a slow starter which was prime advantage for Mike Tyson who's a ferocious fast starter.
LARRY HOLMES THE MOST UNDERRATED HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF ALL TIMES HE WILL BEAT HALF OF THESE HEAVYWEIGHTS TODAY BEST LEFT JAB IN BOXING 🥊
Yes maybe not, Spinks is a man of skill too. 👆
Moses Mushe Yes spinks is a man of skill but he moved up in weight Larry always been a natural heavyweight
Larry used to knock people out with his jab or at least knock them down
Bowe had a better jab
David Varey I have to disagree with you on this one! Question who did Bowe fight beside The Real Deal? Let’s not forget he ducked 🦆 Lewis
Spinks boxed great in this fight. Underrated
He fought a brilliant fight WOW I had no idea he was this great
Speed of lightning... Michael Spinks... What a fight and what a speed.! Bravo Michael
Styles do make fights. Holmes just couldn't figure out Spinks boxing style and he was certainly not intimidated by Larry and he could take a punch
That's why Tyson was so exciting because he knocked out everybody in 2 or 3 rounds That was raw power

Over rated. All the best of the era beat him. Holyfield, Lennox etc. He beat nobodies convincingly. Or old men like Holmes.
All that night Spinks never let Holmes get set with that famous left jab. He just would go under it with a volley of his own punches
And Spinks stayed inside of Holmes. Holmes could never find Spinks where he wanted him.
Ali used to toy with Holmes. When they sparred. He was so fluent and fast.
@@gl6996 100 % correct . Younger Holmes would've timed him and got his punches off. Holmes timing wasn't the same here. Just a second to late all the time.
@@stevemoorman9481 Exactly. Leon Spinks was troublesome for Larry until he got caught...
Spinks had an unusual style. He was also a natural light heavyweight. I think Holmes didn't really know how to fight him.
@@richardespinoza6243 he said that only for respect. Tyson was a swarmer and counter puncher, too skilled and power for prime Holmes.

Precisely!
second fight is controversial decision
but first michael clearly won
Still a great fighter tho he kept going well into his 40s and beat guys like Ray Mercer

So sick of people saying Holmes doesn't get respect, that is not true. Holmes is just not popular and did not fight a roster of legends. No one ever said Holmes was not a great fighter, he has the best jab ever but people just didn't like him and they did not have to.
Before watching this video, I had only seen Michael Spinks box for 91 seconds.
Dam it holmes lost all he's timing... I think a young Holmes would close the match in 8
I agree. Not that Spinks wouldn’t have given him a hard time with that style, but with Holmes’s speed and conditioning he would eventually catch him. He was just too slow here with his added weight from his peek by this point.
@Eilliw Nodrog yeah his style is pretty awkward but he's still great fighter
I’m somewhat of a casual, so I don’t give my opinion much weight, but i just think Spinks wasn’t really meant to move up to heavy weight, as well as he did perform against a few opponents. I think prime Holmes manages to KO Spinks in 5.
Unorthodox, creative and effective style in any way by Spinks. Never saw any other fighter throwing these strange righthand triplettes. Spinks used them several times and Holmes might been asking himself if Spinks had 3 fists hammering on him.🥴
Got to give it to both Spinks brothers. Both won Gold in the 76 Olympics and both beat Great Champions to become Heavyweight Champions of the World
Spinks took the fight to Holmes all night.
Can see why Holmes had a hard time landing on Spinks. Spinks had head movement and foot work. Holmes was used to beating on stationary flat footed heavyweights. Spinks came from the light heavyweight so he was naturally more agile
Whatever your opinion Spinks brought the Jinx this fight
This had to be the toughest, most awkward fight of Larry Holmes' entire boxing career.....nothing like it!
No way...maybe with Norton and Shavers
True
I mean michael spinks surprized larry holmes with his lightning speed ...
I didn't get to watch this when it happened. When I heard the results, my initial reaction was, "uh oh -- Larry pissed off the wrong person within the inner sanctum of boxing."
However, in re-watching this fight multiple times (and through a clearer lens) all these years later, Spinks won, and likely by more than the 1 point margin on 2 of the score cards. He didn't win on style points, but he consistently scored in ways that Larry didn't seem to have an answer for. It's hard to watch a legendary boxer age in the ring, and that's what happened in this fight.
True. I`ve always believed that many a great fighter has their Achilles heel in the form of an opponent: Ali - Norton;
Tyson - Holyfield; etc. Holmes was a truly great champion, but he had no answer for all the problems posed for him
by Spinks.
Tyson took care of both men in 88
Prime Tyson, a very great boxer indeed
My homeboy won the fight St.Louis was lit...One brother beat Ali and the other one beat Holmes, but Larry Holmes is the most underrated heavyweight champion ever in my opinion...He was truly a great champion that had the misfortune of coming behind Ali.
It's obvious Larry Holmes didn't train for this Micheal Spinks and he underestimated him...

Michael Spinks : Im here to take revenge for my brother.
This fight in my opinion is one of the best. Both underrated but both surgeons. Holmes out of his prime and spinks fighting his first time as a heavyweight against the heavyweight champ is incredible. His style was unique and great to watch.
Granted Spikes did win the first fight. It was close and in the end Holmes slack off and did not put away Spinks when he had the chance. However in the rematch clearly Holmes dominated and won the fight from start to finish and the stupid judges gave it to Spinks.

Leon Spinks was the Worst Heavyweight Champion in History!!!
Spinks is just a wild man and crazy in boxing
Pretty nuts that a Light Heavyweight fighting at 175 could step up and fight for a heavyweight belt

It was his chance to equal Marcianos record of 49-0. And Larry didn't want to do it vs a lower ranked opponent. If Holmes had beaten Spinks in this match I do think he would've retired.
I did feel sorry for him win he lost. HE was so close to beating marcianos record and then sudddenly defeaty
Race played a part in why Spinks won, whites had no intention of a black matching a whites record. Don't act like sports haven't been racially motivated for decades.
Larry Holmes was trying to do a Foreman out here so he forgot to fight his own fight... 🤔🤔🤔
Oh? ...explain the rematch.
Holmes definitely won the second fight, he was robbed of it.
SPINKS simply outworked HOLMES & clearly out pointed him & won this fight fair & square
And "Pride goeth before the fall)
And, also Michael Spinx had "revenge" in the way that Larry beat his brother, Leon.

The Spinks family were one bad ass family…lol
I was a little kid when this fight took place. Looking back on it now Michael spinks reminds me of Bootney Farnsworth, the boxer from the movie 'Lets Do it Again'!!!!!
This is like when your little bro button mashes and beats the hell out of you before you can think long enough to use your combos and special moves
I think there was too much on age gap this fight shouldn't have happened
Holmes was 48-0
Sphinx was 27-0
Larry jinxed himself right before this fight because he said Rocky Marciano couldn't carry his jockstrap and I knew right then he was going to lose this fight especially if it came down to a decision because a lot of people didn't like that statement and if he won this fight he would have tied with Marciano record I think 49 & 0
no he said it after the fight. That''s why the judges never allwoed him to be the 3rd boxer in the history to be two times champion ( after patterson and Ali ). This Holmes was close to 36 in this fight. He is one of the best heavyweights ever.

Now I respect Mike Tyson even more for shattering Spinks that easy.

I HAD THE FIGHT 10 ROUNDS TO 5 FOR SPINKS. 145 TO 140
Spinks looked like a gnat flying around an Elephants ass the majority of the fight. Annoying the elephant enough that it looked like it wanted to jump off a cliff.

Michael's varied style was the perfect counter to Larry's jab.
Hard to realize this was the same fighter that didnt last a round with Iron Mike... the confidence Spinks showed here...
Tyson's technical proficiency was too much for Spinks to get this kinda gameplan going. You couldn't bait Tyson like he did to Larry.
Spinks beat Holmes both times!
But mike tyson was beat already both so easy 😂and foreman ali frazier marciano best
And yet Michael Spinks went up against Mike Tyson and was CLEARLY scared half to death! I can almost guarantee he was thinking "Think of the money...think of the money...!"

Holmes in his prime would've been able to fight Spinks far far far far better; there would've been no rematch
Both great fighters
Holmes on his last legs and never over coming age.
