  • The fight was billed as "Vindication in Vegas."
Holmes was a 7½ to 5 betting favorite.
Spinks' purse was $2 million and Holmes' was $1.125 million.
    Tickets were priced at $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50.
There was a crowd of 8,328.
The fight was televised live on HBO.
"The last time, I worked on becoming a heavyweight," Spinks before the fight. "For this fight, I started as a heavyweight and just worked on improving what beat Larry the last time."
Shortly before the fight, Holmes said the judges "must have been drunk" when they scored his first fight with Spinks.
As ring announcer Chuck Hull read off the scorecards after the fight, Holmes turned to his trainer, Richie Giachetti, and moaned, "Oh, no, I've got a big mouth."
After the fight, Holmes said: "The judges, referees and promoters can kiss me where the sun don't shine-and because we're on HBO, that's my big black behind."
Spinks landed 296 of 680 punches (43%) while Holmes connected on 293 of 724 (40%).
42 of 46 sportswriters polled after the fight scored it for Holmes.

Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use
    Fair use
Additionally, the fair use defense to copyright infringement was codified for the first time in section 107 of the 1976 Act. Fair use was not a novel proposition in 1976, however, as federal courts had been using a common law form of the doctrine since the 1840s (an English version of fair use appeared much earlier). The Act codified this common law doctrine with little modification. Under section 107, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement, even if such use technically violates section 106. While fair use explicitly applies to use of copyrighted work for criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research purposes, the defense is not limited to these areas. The Act gives four factors to be considered to determine whether a particular use is a fair use: the purpose and character of the use (commercial or educational, transformative or reproductive); the nature of the copyrighted work (fictional or factual, the degree of creativity); the amount and substantiality of the portion of the original work used; and the effect of the use upon the market (or potential market) for the original work.

Tyson reign as Undisputed Champion was SO OVERRATED!

Tyson was such a Young Phenom years ahead his peers.......except for Holyfield
By time they came into there prime as contenders to Challenge him.

If Tyson had beaten Holyfield, Bowe, Lewis, George Foreman after he won the championship or after Foreman fought a good fight against Holyfield, or if Tyson had beaten the Ukrainian champ (Tyson was still in his 30's), then Tyson could have been considered one of the greatest.
Tyson never beat 1 of these guys, just a middleweight Olympic champion named Michael Jackson......I mean Michael Spinks. Lol
I think Tyson's greatest victory was against Tony Tucker, but even then Tucker clearly broke his hand and was able to hit Tyson with multiple combinations......no doubt Ali would have used Tyson's head as a punching speed bag.

Ali said worse and more disrespecting things to Joe Frazier. Boxers are known for trash talking, all the time. And corruption shouldn't be allowed anywhere in the sports. Rob a fighter, because he said some "mean stuff" about somebody, is...dumb lol We talk about boxers. Those two things shouldn't be connected to each other in any way. _Michael Stinks,_ awkward? Yeah I suppose his footwork, head and body movement, distance when closing / attacking & retreating / defending is strenuously kack-handed, knock-kneed, and spasmodic-epileptic even-looking, and as for his punches, well yeah, its hard to deny he literally looks like a GI Joe or He-Man plastic figurine in the clutches of an autistic ADHD kid who just skulled three months worth of ritalin & prozac flavoured gummy bears, who keeps turbo-spamming the button on its back at 36 000 rpm to make it do its _"custom" "signature" "attack" "move"_ for a few seconds at a time, 5-10 times a minute...
... in between screeching like a demented banshee at any biological lifeforms, machines, anything moving, making a noise, anything with a screen, and/or anything orange or purple within a 30' radius
Having said that, however, I believe in giving credit where it's due: his-oh yea, FYI I'm talking about Michael Sphinx again BTW-his sphincter movements are, well, I can't see as much as how it might be for-to-be one way or another, or vice versa, pretty much, or not, dude. @@thelevisullivan Holyfield began his career as Cruiserweight, Moorer began at Light Heavy, so neither was a real modern day heavyweight, they’re not like the super-Heavies that were fighting by then. You are correct, Moorer beat the lineal champ, but long after Spinks had beaten Holmes, and Holmes was a natural heavyweight, not to mention dominant, and an alltime great, historic, long term HW champion, longer than anyone but Joe Louis. Also, this isn’t Moorer’s fault but Holyfield lost that fight as much as Moorer won it, that’s the fight after which they discovered a problem with Holyfield’s heart (non-compliant left ventricle, and a small hole between the upper ventricles, the symptoms of which were severe fatigue in the Moorer fight.).
Spinks is the one and only name that matters in this achievement. Roy Jones and James Toney - guys who won “a heavyweight title from some guy with a belt” - don’t belong in the same conversation as the LINEAL LH champ winning the LINEAL HW title by defeating the long term HW champ. It’s only been done once. And Moorer did it 8 years after Spinks against an Evander Holyfield who, that night, was missing one of the main attributes that made him the HW Champion, his conditioning & endurance. Holyfield won and retained the title (until Bowe) because he outworked bigger guys. He was a shell of himself in the Moorer fight. Again, not Moorer’s fault. Just saying.

Holmes wasn't liked by the boxing officialdom - he rubbed them up the wrong way , which he admitted to , and this can be the only reason the judges went against him . Although he lost the first fight , Larry Holmes won this rematch fairly and squarely in my opinion . There is no doubt that he outpointed Spinks , which makes the decision even more baffling - but not entirely unexpected .

Holmes was too old at this point and the public would have been expecting a quick KO with Holmes vs Tyson. The Public was sold that Spinks would be a hard fighter for Tyson to figure out....wasn't the case, but the money was made.

@@joeb2588 I have no idea what fight you guys were watching. I have watched the fight many times, although it's sickening, because we knew it was totally rigged. Personally, I scored it 12 rounds for Holmes, 2 for Spinks and one dead even. Not even a remotely close fight. Then Spinks went on to fight bums like Stephen Tangstead and Gerry Cooney. I actually think had Michael Spinks and Cooney fought 10 times, Gerry would've knocked him out 8 of 10, but didn't have it on that night. Had he hit Spinks with that left hook he hit Norton with, Spinks would've died in the ring. Honestly, I would've loved to see it. My ONLY regret about the Tyson/Spinks fight is that Tyson didn't get to manhandle him even more so, and just absolutely PUNISH and destroy Spinks, and draw it out for longer, the same exact way Julio Caesar Chavez did to Not so Macho Camacho. Chavez could have knocked his ass out midway through that fight, but promised everyone that once the fight was over, even Camacho's family wouldn't recognize him the next day. He wasn't lying! I wish Tyson would have punished and disfigured that little coward, pansy, Michael Spinks. But hey, beating his sorry ass in 91 seconds was pretty satisfying too. I wish he would've landed an overhand right to Spink's face the same exact way he did to Michael Johnson, that knocked out Johsnon's two front teeth.
Spinks vs. Holmes I was close but still a joke, since it was basically a draw, and Holmes was the LONG TIME Heavyweight Champion, and looking to tie Rocky Marciano's record of 49-0. Spinks vs. Holmes II was a total and complete joke, that I think turned a lot of then boxing fans completely off, including me at the time. I was only 15-16 years old, and remember just being totally irate. I couldn't STAND Spinks' style of "fighting". Run, run, run, then have these little fits in the last 10-12 seconds of a round, doing NO damage to Holmes whatsoever, but would be able to persuade judges and win a round, he had zero business being in. Michael Spinks was a good, not great, Light Heavyweight fighter. But thank the Good Lord, that Mike Tyson made him look like the total bum that he was. It's a black eye to boxing that shows a Spinks victory over Holmes at any point. "Spinks Jinx, my ass". More like having the judges in your back pocket. I loved it after this fight, Spinks vs Holmes II, when The Great Easton Assassin, Larry Holmes, looked into the camera and said the immortal words, that still ring so very true. "I can say to all the judges, referees, and promoters, to kiss where the sun don't shine, and since we on HBO, that's my big black behind".
Yes SIR Mr. Holmes, and how well said. Larry will go down as a top 3-4 Heavyweight in history, and Michael Spinks will go down as a total pansy ass bum, that 75% of true fight fans say he lost the first fight, and 99% of them say he lost the second fight. Thank the Lord, Mike Tyson came around, just at the right time, and absolutely humiliated Michael Spinks. What jinx was that he was talking about? He was the most scared to death fighter I've ever seen before Tyson basically castrated him on live TV during that fight. Michael Spinks was total garbage as a Heavyweight fighter.

Michael Spinks is a elusive fighter A great fighter too Just going the Distance with Holmes as a blown up light Heavyweight..But being undefeated in this fight I guess they thought he was worth more then Holmes..I had it a draw but It should’ve been Holmes both times I wonder If Holmes was Champion when he fought Tyson how he would have done.

Holmes could outbox almost anyone ever, but aggressive fighters gave him some problems (Shavers, Weaver, even Cooney). Still, I think the Holmes who beat Shavers twice would have survived Tyson’s onslaughts and outpointed him.

First, a DRAW; second, Larry's WIN - a draw, perhaps.
    1st 1/2 of fight 2, Larry Holmes; 2nd 1/2 of fight 2, Michael Spinks.
He went on to hamstring a Parkinson-infected, aged Muhammed Ali, Larry did.
Michael Spinks had lost to Michael Tyson even before he entered the ring; a loser was he out of FEAR.

@@connshawnery6489 yes, i agree. We all know Holmes was a very patient fighter, but in this case, it's really weird, Spinks legs were complety gone and Larry kept walking slowly instead of jumping on him to finish him, plus he perfectly knew, with the controversy about the referee and Marciano, that he had to get a knock out to win. Maybe someday we'll know better what really hapenned that night. i had the same doubts about the two fights Ali vs leon spinks, and we now know that the fbi was doing an investigation about those 2. One thing is sure, boxing world isn't a complete clean sport...

    • @connshawnery6489
      @connshawnery6489 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Paperback Boxing isn’t clean for certain. How’s this for a conspiracy theory? Larry threw both fights with Spinks. Larry was undefeated in 48 pro fights and basically was the worthy heir to succeed Ali and really carried on his tradition. Great balance, chin, movement and a tactician in the ring like Ali. Spinks was a natural light heavy and the second fight proved that Spinks couldn’t even hurt Holmes, even with proper conditioning. Holmes has a history with Don King and the idea of fights being fixed by King and his organization is not only an widely known inside the sport, as far as most experts and journalists are concerned it’s incontrovertible. Anything is possible, but just look at the evidence and make up your own mind. Also consider his later comeback where he defeats a younger, stronger (more technically skilled opponent than Spinks IMO) in Ray Mercer. Ray Mercer gave Lennox Lewis a lot of trouble and probably robbed of the decision in their fight as well. All theories, but more question marks...

Many observers thought Holmes was robbed in both of these fights with Spinks as the Good Old Boy boxing establishment punished him for his Marciano comments/ If Spinks had left the heavyweights alone his reputation would be untarnished by the Tyson debacle and he would be considered the greatest light-heavy of all time !!!###
