    We use hydrosol for creating a calming attractant for our honeybees. We mix it with some sugar syrup, pour into a spray bottle, and use it in place of smoke. We have been using the hydrosol of lavender for about four years now. The bees fly right to it. Thanks for the video.

      Hello I would be interested in how much sugar you mix in the lavender hydrosol and do you spray that directly into the beehive instead of the smoke? maybe interesting for you I use apple cider vinegar mixed with garlic instead of formic acid for varroa control that works well in my climate zone that a beekeeper from Syria taught me !! Thank you

      He’s slap using this term which is antiquated and smacks of hippy nonsense, where’s the evidence of s hydrated colloid here, are there some in suspension of water, maybe? Sol in this sense has a meaning as colloid, natural substances aren’t all safe or of positive efficacy, plants produce chemicals to hurt drug kill you, stop creatures from eating as all life rarely wished to be destroyed before or unless part of reproductive cycle. The microbial world of virus prion cells of mycology and in an arms race forever. No living species does anything to benefit other species, accident or we exploit or alter for symbiotic at best. What the hell is catnip for? Of course water up for cold ( point if jacketed glass, against gravity.
      What chemical after, don’t say a bunch because that’s foolish, nepetalactone isn’t DEET or near as effective, putting that into the human body sill make you sick, if for cats. Treat all the diseases carry not as vector from rats, toxoplasmosis vermin. Get a 🐕, that’s not an efficient extraction method, look at outcome. Have you tried doing this with lemon balm/Melissa officinalis? I think the herbs would have to be replaced many times since it apparently has such a low oil content. Is that even do-able, or would you need a giant herb flask? The oil is soooo expensive and you don't really know if it's adulterated or not, but this stuff grows like a weed and manages to re-seed itself up to SIX FEET away from the original plant. I'm always chopping it back and I'd love to be able to do something really USEFUL with it.

    • @ChristopherLeifson

      I tried lemon balm once, I did not get any oil, however the whole process was a disaster, so I cannot vouch for my results.

    You should be able to increase the yield of essential oil by saturating it with ammonium sulfate (or just table salt) to the hydrosol, salting out the oil.

      Curing oils is a simple as putting them in a bottle with headspace and giving it time. I open the bottles occasionally and air them out. Anywhere from 3-6 months is appropriate but upwards of a year or more depending on the oil and how you want it.

    • @ChristopherLeifson
      @ChristopherLeifson  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This video is about distilling catnip oil. You should try to ask someone who actually dies that kind of work. To briefly answer, terpenes are legal, if you were to distill cannabis essential oil it would be thc free. If you wanted to extract the fat soluble molecules you could use an oil extraction afterwards. More likely would be to make an absolute and separate the thc from that, but I’m still not certain an alcohol extract would get all the thc your looking for. Again, I suggest asking someone who works specifically with cannabis.

    • @KingsHustleLA
      @KingsHustleLA 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thanks....makes sense though....take the terps out and then co2 product or alcohol and then separate and then fractional distillation to make it clear and pure... but i kinda rather dry sift for kief/hash and then steam distillation the rest of the flwr that was sifted to take remaining flavor terps out and since it is dry sifted it wont have much thc i care about...thanks

    hi. my question is, have you ever try to get EO from flower petal? how many drops you get if you have done it?

    • @ChristopherLeifson
      @ChristopherLeifson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Arlene Debbie HI Arlene, thanks for watching my video. To answer your question, yes and no. I have distilled many plants flowers and all, including catnip (discussed below), St. Johns Wort, Goldenrod, and Bee Balm, but I believe you are referring to things like Tuberose, Jasmine, or Lilac. These flowers take a more labor intensive process called enfleurage. In this process the petals are layered on to a sheet of clarified fat, once the fat has been sufficiently infused with essential oil, then it has to be removed with a solvent. There are, of course, more intricacies to the process, but the end result is an absolute. Another way to access these aromas is to soak the botanicals in a solvent. When the and the solvent is evaporated you will be left with a waxy, aromatic substance called a concrete. I hope this helps to answer your question.

      Thank you for taking the time to reformat your question in a more scientific form. You can steam distill Cannabis, but it does not result in the extraction of THC. You would end up with a terpene based oil that would smell like cannabis. At one point Oshadhi oils, the European store, had this oil for sale. It would be a great place to see what the oil is like. I have never done this extraction personally.

    • @ChristopherLeifson

      The oleoresin that I get from distilling balsam poplar sinks to the bottom of the boiling flask where it can be poured out, left to cool, the water poured off, and dehydrated. I have read that the wax from Myrica gale can be boiled out the sane way, but it floats insteads of sinks. In both plants the heat easily seperates the wax or resin from the plant matter.

      Thanks for asking, that is only a 2 liter still, at that volume it’s most plants the yield will be less than 5ml. Secondly, as aromatic as mints are their yields are not excessive. If you look at the cost of an organic peppermint oil it is around 25$ for 5ml. That is on the pricier side. The time of harvest and phenotype makes a difference to, although it may be less noticeable. In the same still filled up, cedar will yield closer to 10 ml. Hope that helps to put perspective on it.

    I am using medicinal marijuana but I've also noticed that when I do extract oils they are clear for a day or two and then some of them cloud up have you run into that if so what is it from

    • @ChristopherLeifson
      @ChristopherLeifson  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm am not exactly certain what you issue is, but in my experience that could be a few things. First some oils solidify with age, this generally takes a while, but the oils can become more cloudy during this time. Another option is that something in the oil is precipitating, often times the precipitates when mixed can make the solution look cloudy. My final suggestion which is probably most accurate, is that you have not completely separated the hydrosol from the essential oil. This can lead to esterfication and a cloudy oil. You mentioned your distilling cannabis, but you did not mention at all how the smell is different after distillation. The smell of the oil can be a huge help in determining what is going on.

    • @ericespinoza247
      @ericespinoza247 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher Leifson after I distilled my medicinal marijuana the oils were clear for about two days and on the third day he became cloudy but to get back to what the smell was like after it smelled like cut vegetation but not like the original herb that I used so I was also going to ask if there would be a curing process for the oils but I think you already answered that

    • @ChristopherLeifson
      @ChristopherLeifson  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have never distilled cannabis so I cannot experience with the matter is limited. Mostly it seems like the hydrosol has not been seperated from the oil correctly.

    • @anthonyirwin6698
      @anthonyirwin6698 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Those are fats and lipids and other compounds in the cannabis. What you would want to do is "winterize" your oil.
      You'll need 95% ethanol, mix your oil into the ethanol at a 10:1 ratio of ethanol:oil, then stick it in the freezer for 24 hours. You should see coagulation of the fatty materials, you can then filter this using a buchner filter and some filter paper of various stages. Typically starting with coffee filters then down to a 1 micron filter paper, then a 0.8 micrion paper, and then finally a 0.1 micron boro chemical filter paper. After which if you really want to refine it you add carbon powder to the filtered solution and warm it while stirring. Use a filter aide like diatomaceous earth to filter out the carbon powder.
      Evaporate the ethanol and you should be left with a very clear and pristine concentrate.

    • @anthonyirwin6698
      @anthonyirwin6698 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My bad, the filter sizes are wrong. It's 20 micron, then 8 micron, then 1.0 micron.

Would this change anything, pressure, timing, amount of medium used, etc? Hey Chris one more question why sometimes when using steam distillation people put the herb above the boiling water like in the video and sometimes they mix the herb in the water this has really confused me?

    • @ChristopherLeifson
      @ChristopherLeifson  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chris Okay Chris, the reason that your confused is because there is lots of confusion surrounding the topic. For a cheap and simplified version I suggest, Make Your Own Essential Oils by Daniel Coaten, while Essential Oils Vol: 1 History-Origin In Plants-Production-Analysis by Ernest Guenther is a very detailed book on the subject. The bottom line is there are several kinds of basic distillation: water, water-steam, and steam distillation. Water distillation is when the herbage is submerged in water. water-steam is when the herbage is suspended above the water, but is still touched by the water, and steam distillation is when the herbage and water are completely separated (Guenther, 1948). Often times the details are overlooked.

    Why don't you have anything to remove pressure, such as a vacuum pump or aspirator?

    • @ChristopherLeifson
      @ChristopherLeifson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because the still is open to the atmosphere on one end, the pressure is equalized and a vacuum is unnecessary. You may be thinking of fractional, or vacuum distillation, in which the vacuum creates a lower boiling point allowing volatiles to evaporate at at a lower temperature.

    nice setup be good to use an adapter for your receiving flask .Plus who told you ro water normal tap water is fine .if you get the browning in your condenser put it in the oven on high and it will burn out most of its just oxides

    • @ChristopherLeifson
      @ChristopherLeifson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Cameron, to clarify the distilled it reverse osmosis water is for the boiling flask. Any volatile molecules like chlorine should be kept out of the distillation. For use around the condenser ant water works, but distilled water will prevent buildup on the glassware. I have not tried sticking glassware in the oven to clean it, but certainly cleaning hunk off the inside of a flash is difficult. Anything to cut down on the cleaning time. Thanks for the input!

    When I do my essential oil's from dry herbs it smells funny after and and I tried curing the oil to see if maybe the smell comes alive but it still smells off not like the herb I'm trying to extract the oil from

    • @ChristopherLeifson
      @ChristopherLeifson  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What plant are you distilling, when did you harvest it, what is off smelling about it? It is common for freshly distilled oils to have nitrogenous and sulfurous compounds. I have seen oils take up to 6 months before smelling accurate. What's confusing about this situation is that typically I find the dryer the material is at distillation, the more it smells like it's supposed to.

      +Rain Tree Hi again Rain Tree, I ask that you please state the sources for your information on EO/tea equivalency. While it is wise to relay that essential oils may interact with other medications, I think it would be more valid to say that EO's will definitely interact with other drugs and medications. Do not use internally with other prescriptions without first notifying your healthcare provider. Furthermore, steam distilled water is equivalent and maybe more accessible than reverse osmosis, or even possible to make yourself with the same still, just watch out for deposits...

      +Rain Tree I think he was speaking about drinking the Hydrosol

    • @ChristopherLeifson
      @ChristopherLeifson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even when discussing hydrosols, I do not encourage drinking them, although it is more dependent on the actual plant that is distilled. Spice hydrosols could be used as a flavoring, or diluted in water like a tincture. While I cannot outright say, go for it, especially with catnip; I cannot dispute that a hydrosol would be a safer drink than the essential oil. In the end it is about responsible use. I cannot think of many reasons to drink a hydrosol, but as a mouth wash, it sounds appealing.

    Do you recommend freshly picked or dried herbs for distillation? If I have dried herbs, can they be used? Thanks!

    • @ChristopherLeifson
      @ChristopherLeifson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a great question, thanks for asking. Truly it depends on the plant and method of distillation, but it is recommended that the herbage be wilted it dry before distilling. I find that the drier the material the less green the oil smells afterwards, and less curing time for the oil is needed.

    • @ChristopherLeifson
      @ChristopherLeifson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For most distillations I suggest using dry herbage. I find it creates less odd note post distillation abs of course you can usually fit more in a still dry.

    • @ChristopherLeifson
      @ChristopherLeifson  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you elaborate more on the Soxhlet, I thought that was for extractions with dilutes like alcohol.

    • @tag7299
      @tag7299 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Soxhlet is for the continuous liquid extraction of very lowly volatile and badly soluble compounds into a highly concentrated extract. Your reservoir below the soxhlet extractor unit is heated, evaporating your solvent which is recondensed above the soxhlet unit and drops into your matrix, from where it drops back into the reservoir.
      Brews one hell of a tea, but not so ideal for the extraction of essential oils as you'd have to use an organic solvent which then has to be distilled off later. Depending on what you intend to do with your extract, maybe something that should be left to the professionals.

    I think I understand how to put this thing together. I got mine from Ebay at a fairly good price, but it came from China and doesn't have directions. I don't understand how to attach the hoses that run the water through the condenser. Do I attach them to a faucet and leave the water on, or do I fill up the sink with water and use a pump? Does using the pump make the water go through the hose, and if using a pump, do you still have to attach the hose to the faucet? I assume the other hose just drains the water into the sink?

    • @ChristopherLeifson
      @ChristopherLeifson  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      How the hose connects to the sink is going to be determined by your nozzle and laboratory material, but for home use generally a fish tank pump with hoses the same diameter as the pump lumen. Connect it at the bottom and let it fill to the top, and yes the other hide is the drain.

    • @Psalm119148
      @Psalm119148 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Are you saying that the pump is supposed to be attached to the hose? Is there a place on the pump to attach to the hose? Thanks for your help and video.

    Have you ever tried this with turmeric? I know the active ingredient in it--curcumin---is a fantastic anti-inflammatory, but it also stains horribly and you can't get it out. I wondered if turmeric could be turned into an essential oil, it wouldn't stain as bad.

    • @ChrisPBacon-rs9iv
      @ChrisPBacon-rs9iv 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      mary what these things do is heat all liquidous fats and hydro soluble things from a material into a vapor that condenses into a purified liquid, if curcumin is fat or water soluble it will be vaporiezed and fractioned off in the oil, this presscess does not change whats in the material only extracts and concentrates it. so yes this would give you curcumin, and yes it will stain, but more importantly this will be the most intense stain youve seen in your life, it would be a nightmare to clean off the equipment and more importantly your body. so find a different anti inflamitory
