An old friend, since passed on, fitted a 308 ci to an LJ Torana back around 1982. 4 speed manual.
My father used to compete against Harry Firth in the 1950s.

The 308 is a very neat fit in there!
I believe every Torana from LC to UC should have offered V8's as an option. Customers loved them.
Oh well........the XU1's went on to have the best looking Holden engines ever. The performance wasn't too shabby either.

Love the car...LJ Torana was my first car. It was tricked up to be XU1. It was the fastest thing in Blacktown...my dad was a Holden mechanic and he tuned it to perfection. I blew up the engine..spark plugs flying out etc...my dad put in a motor and brought it back to life. My dad died last year 87yo...he was one of the first Holden mechanics, learnt his trade when he was conscripted into the Army 1951.

In around 1980, a friend had a 308 XU1. It even had XU2 stickers on it. I can't remember the back story, however, I sincerely doubt it was from the factory. Even though it definately looked like it was made that way. He actually he let me drive it once, and it was a pretty lively as I recall.

Some of the guys who worked on the V8 XU1 behind the scenes back in the day said that the LJ chassis wasn't suitable or strong enough to handle the extra weight and extra torque of the 308 despite harry firth insisting that it was fine.. can only imagine if it was and if the snowflakes of the day didn't scare them off this thing would have been the fastest and most dominant Aussie road/race car ever built 👀

V8 to Torana's was a common swap when I was young, a friend ripped the much modified 308 out of his HG to put in a LC GTR although many preferred the Chevy small block. When I was an apprentice back in the 70's a Torana with a 308, XU-2 stickers and twin filler caps on the quarter panels came in, the owner suggested it was a factory special, I wonder if it was one of Harry Firths cars.

@@666theninjaI think the last of the phases was the phase 4 or XA GT.
Ford had plans for a phase 6 never built but designed
That design was given to a friend of theirs, who built it to spec
Nothing would catch it 160mph cruising!
Story I heard a bluebird shot past it like it was standing still, shocking the driver and passenger while were sitting on around 130mph!
Caught up with the bluebird sometime down the road and asked to see what was under the bonnet .
Driver refused and drove away slowly.
I'm betting he had a massive turbo running about 25lbs of boost plus a lot of go parts under the bonnet, custom built motor definitely far from stock.

Harry Firth (R.I.P.) prepared and raced the V8 XU-1's. He reckoned the benchmark was John Goss's GTHO that he wanted to beat. It was an LC XU-1 rego number KSN-116 and raced at Bathurst at Easter in 1972 and the results were promising considering that that car had only a 17 gallon fuel tank and a standard carby with no engine modifications. I think that the stillborn LJ XU-1 V8 in it's final form would not have had things it's own way though. The Phase Four was packing enormous grunt, and in a much slipperior shape than the XY GTHO. The E49 Charger was the only one to be released before that news story from Evan Green was released that spelled the end for both the Phase Four and V8 XU-1. Before Chrysler Australia reacted to that news (?) story and pulled out of racing the E49 raced at at Oran Park, came from nowhere with Leo Geoghan at the wheel, passed the whole field and hammered John Goss to eventually finish fractions of seconds behind him. The 340 Charger for racing? Leo Geoghan (R.I.P.) was certain that it was not going to go ahead. He reckoned that it was too nose heavy and the six pack hemi was faster around the test track anyway. Somebody must have thought it was a good idea though. They imported a lot of 340 V8's that had to be sold so they were stuffed into a luxury VH Charger to get rid of them.

The GMH Engineered XW7 308 V8 LJ had a 300HP 308 V8 in them they were a worked 308 with a Big Cam and Worked Heads, they were L34 Engine before the L34 Engine was done later on. They had a Detroit Locker 2.78 Diff and Brake up grades plus new Brake Pads and Heavy Duty Race Suspension as well. Harry and Holden Engineering worked hard on the V8 LJ Program and Fred James the GMH Engine Engineer and Ian Tate and Harry worked hard on the XW7 308 V8. The Phase 4 Ford Falcon was in for a Shock at Bathurst 1972 and Brocky behind the Wheel, would of been a Great Victory like it was in 1972 without the 308 V8 any way.

    • @area51isreal71
      @area51isreal71 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@666theninja Yes agreed, the XU-1 V8 was pretty well sorted and tested and the Phase 4 had yet to compete in a real life race. But what looks good on paper and race results in good conditions does not always translate to reality on race day. Remember Bathurst '72 started out in the wet and was all saw Moffat's struggle to get all those horses to the ground in the wet. It could have been a problem for the V8 LJ as well. We will never know sadly.

Don't know that they would have dominated, speaking to my grandfathers brother, who worked on the programme, he said they had major understeer and brake overheating issues, to the point that they estimated a gain of 1.5-2secs up Mountain and down Conrod straights, but would lose 2.5-3secs across the top, and the brake issues were being caused by the heavier braking needed across the top to negate the understeer, and they were struggling with the diff strength as well

With the weight of the Torana being so light, and lack of roll cage or decent brakes, conrod straight could've been the deadly downfall for some drivers. 30 yrs ago my best mate had a genuine XU1 which had a 308 conversion. He had previously owner an XYGT (which he has since bought back). The conversion certainly devalued the car as he learnt later. We did 130mph in that car. And 125mph in the GT. To be fair, it would have been close between the two. The Torana's wheelbase and weight distribution didn't like fast tight corners and you couldn't hang it out as reliably like the GT. Both had pros and cons. I reckon a worked LJ XU1 with webers etc would be quicker than the V8 version. I was more concerned that the M21 would explode as the shifter vibrated like crazy! Maybe Brett will read this and tell you more.

Proved the car was faster that the 6cyl. I have owned a LJ XU1 Torana and drove it at speed and owned a heap of 308 V8 LJ Torana's. The V8 ones handle better and are way faster, Simple as that. The V8 LJ was getting a Detroit Locker Diff, Funny the Yellow LC HDT V8 XU1 Prototype in testing by Larry Perkins never blew a diff or a gearbox in Extreme Open Highway Testing and Track Testing. Harry was a mile ahead of Ford's Phase 4 in testing, as Harry fired up the Yelow LC V8 HDT XU1 (KSN116) up on Xmas Day 25/Dec/1971 and took Fred James for a mad hoon in it and Fred reported back to the GMH Chiefs and the Program got instant approval and they started testing that Yellow LC XU1 V8 in early Jan 1972 through to April 1972 then in May 1972 the V8 LJ Prototypes were Developed and been tested.

When the LH L34 was released, it used all of the development learned from the XU-2, and iI didn't weigh much more than the V8 LJ.
