Just got started with home assistant so was surprised when they showed up in the configuration page :) Have them all over the house accent lights on back of the TV, mounted under kitchen cabinets, under bed rails, ETC.
thank you for answering. Do you know how to use 12volt ws2811 with wled? I want to use 12v not 5v cuz 5v not enought to show colour truely for 5meter 300led.
For lowering current, i would use the WS2815 strips. 12V, individually addressable, and it brings the current down to about 1/3. They also allow for an LED to 'die' and the rest of the strip will still function. Also, there is no significant voltage drop along 5m strips, so you don't get color changes, like you do on long runs of 5V strips. So if you are doing longer runs, you cut down on current, and you need less power injection points. There is a higher idle current draw than other strips though. but i personally don't care about that, but it's something to consider.
Idle power draw should not be a problem as in a decent setup there should be a relay cutting power to the strip unless the controller is on. Wled has support for such relay control.

Hi, thank you for the video it was very helpful. I ended up buying the anthom controller, but it says that it can only control 90 leds. Can you provide some clarification on the number of leds a controller can handle. Please and thanks
@@makeitworktech Wow thanks for the fast reply I have more questions if you don't mind Is there is a way to link multiple devices to act as one? Can this run a long led strip-like 10 meters?
Govee's app allows you to address each led with a visual representation on the app of each light string. Is there anything like that with WLED? I bought of bunch of string lights and they have silly drawings that can scroll around. I want to use this to make a specific lights blink on and off. Their app worked great for that, but required you to connect the phone each time you turned it on to load the pattern. The prop I will be making needs to be portable and will have the power turn on and off often. Is there an option that will save your pattern and automatically start back up with it the next time it's turned on?
There is "Peek" mode that allows you to see a visual representation of the light strip. There is also a way to break up the strip into segments, and control those individually. WLED will start back up with the same pattern it was turned off, but if power is completely disconnected it won't start back up that way. However, you can save presets so that you can quickly apply these effects after power is re-supplied.
Hi there I just bought a 5v ws2812b 144 lights per meter and they are 3 meters long 432 lights on 1 three meter strip. So I bought X3 three meters strip which in total 423x432= 1.296 lights. I've never tried higher, but your best bet would be to power the controller and the LED strips separately... don't pass the power through the controller.
Doesn't that barrel connector adapter melt over 3amp? Where did you get that adapter and why are you using it instead of the wires that come with the controller? I couldn't understand what you said in the video. Thank you
No, that adapter can easily handle 3A. I don't remember where I got the adapter, but you can find them on Amazon. There were no wires that came with the controller - I bought the power supply separately and it was easier for me to use the adapter than using the adapter that came with the power supply.
Hi there, many thanks for your videos, I was hoping you could help with a quick question, if I go the ATHOM route, how MANY RGB 2812b or Sk6812 RGBW LEDs will the 16 amp ATHOM handle,
I'm not sure how many sk6812, but 2812b use 0.6 A per LED, so you can do the math. I did forget to mention voltage dropoff, which happens in 5V strips.
@@makeitworktech hi there, I just received my Athom products this last week and I am blown away, thank you so much again for your initial video, I purchased a high power digital controller and an RGBW controller. One quick question if you don't mind, when setting up the RGBW non digital (dumb) strip do I choose PWM RGBW in the drop down menu part of LED outputs?
Good video. I've been programming ws2812b myself using RP2040, SAMD51, and ESP32-S2. I just ordered a D1-ESP32-mini to run wled on. I love programming the animation sequences myself for custom DIY maker projects and little art/science smashups, but I don't need that capability for all the places I use RGB LEDs. I also have some EP8266 D1-minis coming for the smaller integrations with lesser requirements (such as no need for high speed music reactivity).Fun stuff.
Govee is popular because it is really easy to use (just plug and play), and the app can coordinate different light strip with ease. And I cannot get out of Govee because of Dream View. But I agree Govee strip is really low quality (30led/M), so a lot of visible hot spot. They have a newer ones with 60Led/M, but super expensive.
You can do most of what Govee can do with WLED, although Govee's UI may be a little nicer. What's nice about WLED is that you can choose whatever LED strip you want!
What if you wanted to use a led strip with 322 leds per meter like the cobb strip? Could you do a video or explanation on how to configure a strip like that?
I have the athom controller, however the outputs of the controller don't match yours. Mine are W, G, B, R and Vcc. Any idea, what I could do to map these to connect to the LED strips?
I've connected the power supply but my Athom LS-4P won't turn on...I can't find it in discovery or WIFI settings. I've tried swapping the electrical wires, clicking the on/off button - nothing.
The one I linked isn't the HomeKit version (not when I click the link anyway), but the two are very similar. The LS-4P is the WLED version and will work with HA, but the LS-5P is the HomeKit version and I have never tested it
@@makeitworktech If you ever update your video you should emphasise this. I could not find the 4P on Amazon. My search came up with the 5P, which I bought then subsequently found it does not work. Easy to get them confused. the boxes and units look identical. Thanks.
I updated the app version and now the app would not load. Also the WiFi is not showing is there a way to do a complete reset of the athom controller or do I need a new one
Any way to use a physical remote to control this same setup? Just basic function is fine so that anyone can turn on of and change brightness without having to use the WLED phone app. Ideally a WiFi remote as the infrared remotes need line of sight to work and my setup won't allow that
but its 5v so not recommende for longer uses better variant it the w2813 because when there one led is broke the rest of the strip after the broken one still works

Hi, sorry, I have no experience with Hue! Hopefully someone else can help!
Can you do a video showing how to use the atom with motion sensor ?????
Which one has that? I've never seen that one!
Excellent video. Well done Eric.
Thank you kindly!
Good morning from Greece. I would like to ask you something. Does the WLED application for smartphones work without being connected to the Wi-Fi network;;;;; I know that you have to setup the WLED through the Wi-Fi network but after that can we use the controller via Bluetooth in a place without Wi-Fi network;
Thank you in advance
Any recommendations for LED strips that go through my Tuya app? I got all my lights set-up and strip connected but can't figure out how to adjust the brightness or color.
Is it possible for WLED to combine two or more controllers/strips into one virtual strip so that an animation which ran down the first strip would then continue seamlessly to the next and so forth?
You can sync two controllers into one I believe, but I've never tried it.
It's it possible to have two addressable strips and one normal WW strip to this controller? How would I do this?
Can I Connect two single color strip led to one athom controller?
txs!, was able to install evryting perfect. im now going to pair it with hyperhdr
Nice!
Hi, thank you for the video it was very helpful. I ended up buying the anthom controller, but it says that it can only control 90 leds. Can you provide some clarification on the number of leds a controller can handle. Please and thanks
Thanks! It depends on what LEDs you use. I showed you how to do the math for WS2812B LEDs in the video
Hi, thanks for the video.
Is this cloud dependent?
Is there a zigbee version?
Thank you
Hi, you're welcome! Nope, local only!
I'm not aware of any Zigbee WLED devices or firmware
@@makeitworktech
Wow thanks for the fast reply
I have more questions if you don't mind
Is there is a way to link multiple devices to act as one?
What controller with WLED programmed in and power supply would I get 5v and how many amps and watts It's a 5v ws2812b
Thanks for the video man!
Is it possible to use the sync section of WLED with the 2 controller options? Would love to see a controller with music sync!!
You're welcome!
Yes, but Sync doesn't sync with music, it syncs with other controllers. You can do music sync, but you need a microphone: th-cam.com/video/_jZRzWsw8gs/w-d-xo.html
@@makeitworktech thanks for your answer! I know that Video, but i dont know how to setup up a LED Controller with Music Sync and HomeKit. I only saw Videos about one point, but not both at the same time. Maybe thats a Video idea for you?
Hmmm, I've never tried HomeKit... We'll see!
Do these LEDs take time to turn on? I am considering rigging up a strip to the light switch going down the stairs of my basement.
More delay than a standard light switch and bulb, but no super long
i have a esp8266 12e & a ch340 board, want to install wled into it, went to wled site , they directly say to connect it to pc & the will online install it, where can you find the sketch & manually install it.
How did you do the 90 degree turns on your door frame?
Hi there, can this be configured into Hubitat? Very useful V ideo
Hi, thanks! No, I don't think WLED works with Hubitat
great video. question... can't you use some 12 or even 24V leds so that you don't need a power supply that does so much current?
Thanks! Probably! The Athom controller supports a few different strips.
Yes, but the LEDs are not individually addressable. For 12VDC it's 3 LEDs per pixel and 24VDC it's 6 LEDs per pixel.
@@gerryf7015 WS2815 ARE individually addressable, and 12V.
Not me getting a 300w power supply for 300 LEDS, but now I know I’ll never have a problem!
Haha that should power plenty!
I thought you was doing the govee lights I wanted to see if it works with WLED
You want to see if govee LED strips will work with WLED?
You mention if you wanted white you would get a strip with white LED’s for lower power usage. Can you recommend a strip with white LEDs that would work with that controller?
Yeah, I just bought some of these... More efficient and have a dedicated white LED!

@@makeitworktech Thank you so much for the info!
Very helpful video, thanks a lot! I do have one question. I want to use this exact set-up, but with SK6812 LED strip instead of WS2812B. Is this possible? The linked Athom controller in your description seems to be compatible. Are there any differences between your set-up and a set-up with SK6812 I should keep in mind? Thanks in advance!🙏
Thanks!
Check part 2! I used an SK6812 in that video!
@@makeitworktech Awesome, thank you!
The wled native app doesn’t have discovery! Idk how to connect my esp32 to the app
Just getting started in WLEDs and found your channel; soooooo helpful! Are there any books that you would recommend for someone just getting started? Thanks!
Thanks! No, there are really no books that I know of, but the best source of information for WLED that I found is from Dr. Zz's TH-cam channel
@@makeitworktech Thanks very much for your input.
Really good video
Current Project
LED WS2812B 5volt
Length 5 Meter
LEDS 720
Math
0.06 × 720 =43.2 amp
43.2 ×5= 216 wattage needed
Controller LS4P-WLED
Psu 5V 60A 300W Power Supply 110V / 220V AC to DC 5V 60amp
Fuse 10AWG 50 amp
Question
Will the psu kill the Controller as amps higher than 18 ? As going to power the other end of Leds ? Any feedback will be great
I've never tried higher, but your best bet would be to power the controller and the LED strips separately... don't pass the power through the controller.
Personally i like 2 typs of leds ws2812b and sk6812 cause i do like warm white cause its cozy
My good buddy once said, "cool white is clean, but warm white is more inviting." Words to live by :-D
fantastic video, thank you so much
Thanks! No problem!
Hi there, many thanks for your videos,
I was hoping you could help with a quick question, if I go the ATHOM route, how MANY RGB 2812b or Sk6812 RGBW LEDs will the 16 amp ATHOM handle,
I'm not sure how many sk6812, but 2812b use 0.6 A per LED, so you can do the math.
Sounds awesome! There are so many cool places to use individually addressable LED strips, but it just takes TIME haha
Haha!
Can I connect 2 strips of LED lights to the same athom controller I'm using it for my stairs so I need one for each side
Yes, you just need double the power
Govee is popular because it is really easy to use (just plug and play), and the app can coordinate different light strip with ease. And I cannot get out of Govee because of Dream View. But I agree Govee strip is really low quality (30led/M), so a lot of visible hot spot. They have a newer ones with 60Led/M, but super expensive.
You can do most of what Govee can do with WLED, although Govee's UI may be a little nicer. What's nice about WLED is that you can choose whatever LED strip you want!
Where did you get the two wire DC adapter you show at the 7 minute mark to get the power into the controller? Can you add that to the links?
Yeah, my bad, I'll add them!
Thanks this video is so far best explanation about how leds are and Wled interacts. Can you help me to use Wled app for Twitch chat or channel points?
Thanks! Hmmm, I wouldn't know how to start with that!
What if you wanted to use a led strip with 322 leds per meter like the cobb strip? Could you do a video or explanation on how to configure a strip like that?
That's a little beyond me! Hopefully I can answer some questions in part 2? I don't have a timeline on that though
Just the video i was looking for thank you!
Awesome, thanks!
Great video! Does it also work with RGBW strips?
Thanks! This specific controller does not. I think WLED in general expects 5v, Ground, and Data channels
Wled does have support of rgbw strips.
I have the athom controller, however the outputs of the controller don't match yours. Mine are W, G, B, R and Vcc. Any idea, what I could do to map these to connect to the LED strips?
Likely you accidentally got the LS-5P instead of the LS-4P. That controller doesn't work with individually addressable LED strips unfortunately
I've connected the power supply but my Athom LS-4P won't turn on...I can't find it in discovery or WIFI settings. I've tried swapping the electrical wires, clicking the on/off button - nothing.
To me that sounds like a defective unit. Clicking the on/off button should turn the relay on/off and you'll hear a click sound.
Is it also possible to make a WLED strip that uses gizbee instead of Wifi?
Not with WLED I don't think
QUESTION...Are the LED's individually addressable with the WLED APP and the controller you showed? Thanks in advance
Do you mean, can you control each LED individually?
Hi, thanx for the video, one question, is the Athom Controller compatible with home assistant as the one you linked looks like homekit?
The one I linked isn't the HomeKit version (not when I click the link anyway), but the two are very similar. The LS-4P is the WLED version and will work with HA, but the LS-5P is the HomeKit version and I have never tested it
@@makeitworktech great, thank you so much
@@makeitworktech If you ever update your video you should emphasise this.
You updated the app and now the controller is missing? Sounds like an app problem, not controller
Amazing video 10/10
Thanks Martin!
Did you use the diffuser for these
No but on part 2 I did.
Hey.. is there a Neon Rope that can be cut that you recommend that can work with this controller?
Not that I know of, but you might be able to run a strip through this: amzn.to/42IK9KJ
Great Video, will try that soon
Thanks! You won't regret it! ezpz
can you combine 5x 5m strip to a group to make a continuous scene?
Yes, but you will have to inject power for each strip, and you'll need a pretty hefty power supply for five strips
Another super helpful video!!!
Thanks! I didn't realize this one would take off! 😁💡
hi
Athom Smart Home has a Logic Level Converter Convert on
the signal?
I'm not sure, I never opened it up to see
Im new to this, Does this rgb controller still react to sounds?
This one doesn't but there are others that do
Great video thank you very much
Glad you enjoyed it
Any way to use a physical remote to control this same setup? Just basic function is fine so that anyone can turn on of and change brightness without having to use the WLED phone app.
Ideally a WiFi remote as the infrared remotes need line of sight to work and my setup won't allow that
There's no WiFi remote that I know of, sorry
but its 5v so not recommende for longer uses better variant it the w2813 because when there one led is broke the rest of the strip after the broken one still works
