Also, one of the Houdini's tricks was doing it while hanging upside down. It "stretches" (I don't know how to explain it correctly, English is not my first language) making your upper torso thinner, it loosens the straitjacket if someone put you in it while standing, so it makes it look way harder, like "oh, he's doing it while hanging upside down!!" but in reality it made it easier.
The Magic related episodes are always really entertaining. Bryan does such a 180 degree shift, he goes from "oh god oh god oh god" to "listen here fool". Great to see^^
There was literally a GMM episode about escaping from a straitjacket a few years ago! Neither of them are magicians, though, so it wasn't quite as informative as this.
spoiler alert! for those who haven't seen the episode of GMM with straightjackets rhett and link had different jackets, links had armpit straps where rhetts did not. the modern rogues also didn't have armpit straps, so i wonder how they would do if they did.
I was the brought up on stage with a guy escaping from a straight jacket in March. I messed up the crotch strap binding and he wasn't able to get out :)
I call bull in that. The crotch strap only prevents it from being pulled up over the head, nothing more. You can't thwart an escape by "messing up" the crotch strap..
The funny thing is what Jason did for his "performance" when he said 120 seconds, not everyone will realize that is 2 minutes, so to the majority who didn't catch that, 120 seconds is faster than 2 minutes to them
Lol the moment he said that was I was like?!!........ Was that a joke or do I suck a math. I then double checked my math more times than I'd like to admit.
I think another good gag for this routine is when the hand comes out of the neck to have a old cell phone come up to the ear and start asking for help then drop it and say something like "boring conversation anyway, guess I have to do this the hard way(sounding deflated)" and start doing the whole struggle thing.
When they put they straight jacket on you, it is important to puff out your chest and keep your elbows up to give yourself the most room. As you can see, Brian isn't doing any of that but instead he's making it more difficult. Next what I did was try and pull one arm up my sleeve and into the jacket, so I can use my hand on the clasps starting from the neck down. Sometimes I would need to work my other arm over my head as well. Dislocating both your shoulders is so highly likely I would almost guarantee it, not something to try at home.
*me after watching the demonstration of how the act is done:* ah. i see. it's an act, of course, that makes sense. how quaint. glad i know how that trick works now. i will never be fooled again *Jason, performing:* "yeowch! i'm havin trouble folks! this is really hard! gee whiz" *me:* :O woa how he did that. riveting
12:45 “I rate every Modern Rogue video based on how much Murphy looks like Castro. This one’s about a 3.” oh how i wish live chats had a like button just for this absolute gem
You guys should definitely more stage performance-oriented style videos as a way to do more audience engagement. The moment there's the "fake audience" during that stream, it makes it fun to have the live stream audience cheer on --- which fits well to the stage performance story intention of having an actual audience.
This is such a great episode!!! I love it. Thanks to the Modern Rogue we have now learned how to escape Straight Jackets, Cut Through / Break Zipties, cut through Duct Tape using hidden blades, now we just need an episode where we learn how to escape handcuffs (which was technically covered on Scam Nation). I would love to see an episode where TMZ Cobra makes Brian (or vise versa) use all of the previously mentioned escape methods to escape their captors.
8:23 Close your eyes and relax to the soothing sounds. You may hear the low rumble of water from a waterfall, or wind blowing through the trees of a deciduous forest, or even the pitter patter of rain on boulders from a creek!
That's not how a real straight jacket works. A legitimate jacket has a vertical loop on your stomach your arms go through so you can't lift it over your head. There's no way out if the person putting you in doesn't want you to.
@@The_Other_Ghost no they've had that strap for years. Magicians would usually buy specialty jackets or make adjustments to jackets they purchased to make escaping them easier
In addition to the loop, a proper straightjacket has an additional horizontal strap around the whole thing, which severely limits any horizontal movement of arms. After knowing how a proper straightjacket looks like, the performance seems so lame.
THE VIDEO I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!!! This was awesome Brian, great video and great tutorial! I hope to try a straight jacket escape in the future for my acts, so this was very helpful!
I remember the first time I was in a straight jacket. I was at a goth party and we were showing each other some tricks and gimmicks. I can dislocate my shoulders. The first thing I did was what turn myself in the jacket and dislocated one of my shoulders and tried to pull my arm out. I got legitimately stuck. Even tho I know the secret I was waiting for the same thing to happen to Jason.
20:04 Was that a clip of a Houdini crowd? Back in the mid '90s, my brother and I went to a Renaissance Faire with our grandmother and uncle. One of the acts was a comedic magician/escape-artist named Broon (or Brune, I can't remember which). He put on a body harness prior to the strait jacket so he could be hoisted up ten feet in the air while he escaped. He was pretty good, overall. There was lots of jokes about the crotch strap (and he had a woman do that part, so he could banter with her husband, it was all very inappropriate for kids). There was also a duo named Hack and Slash, but they didn't use strait jackets (although there was still crotch humor, something about an apple and a crossbow, if I recall correctly...).
I'm probably gonna miss out on the mystery box this time; sadly I'm between jobs at the moment and won't get another paycheck in until here in a week or two. I ABSOLUTELY plan to get a mystery box if/when another one is done but sadly I'm gonna have to miss this one. I love you guys' stuff and I applaud you for everything you and Jason do. Keep on being that modern rogue
its fascinating how a lot of magic is either making effortless things look like they take effort, or taking things that take effort and making them look effortless
