  • Today we put our new Japa 471 live deck to use. This is a VERY effective tool for our firewood production. Running logs thru the processor is much more efficient and we can make more firewood faster!

    Love the new machine and love the fact that you are being able to test and display/advertise the new products for Japa. One thing Japa might want to look into is the saw dust extraction system. I can't believe they only have an opening in the frame. You might want to suggest to them that they develop some kind of chute, tube, blower, something. Your trash can idea is great, now if they can neatly and efficiently get the dust into it.

    • @clementsconsulting9216
      @clementsconsulting9216 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      RPM has everything to with the speed at which these tractors operate. The hydraulic fluid flows faster as you raise the rpm. So, everything driven hydrostaticly will move faster. The forks get very "jerky" when the engine is revved up.

    Pretty obvious, the sky is the limit for you now. You've got all the pieces in place. Up to you how much you want to grow or remain a "one man band". I personally like to work alone but with the right people you could produce an incredible amount of firewood. I think your gut will tell you what is right for you and OWB.

    A great machine set up! I do see one thing that needs to be re-designed. The saw dust blows out willy nilly next to the motor and that has to be going into the air filter. I could see a tube, not a shield, on the sawdust port that would direct the sawdust to the ground. If I were in the firewood business here in Illinois, I would want that setup you have.

    The removable splitter is neat. That would make sharpening easy.
    Always a good idea to cool down your equipment before shut down especially the diesel tractor.
    One thing I would add is a Optimate battery charger. It will always top up the battery for you and extent the battery life. For 50$ it will ensure that your day is going to start well.👍🇨🇦

    Hi Joe, your process is looking super slick now! How long does it take to process a full cord?
    The thing that I really like is that you now have the flexibility to just keep running the Jappa without stopping, by getting someone (like a family member) to either run the machine or load poles onto the live bed. I guess, on a nice day, you can output on to the floor and scoop up with the Bobcat, you’ve just got so many options now!
    A couple of things which, I think, could be better:
    1. The sawdust out feed at the back of the machine could do with a chute to make sure more goes into the bin, and less over the back of the machine.
    2. The “interference” between the elevator steps and the strip seems a bit too much and a bit noisy.

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks MPH. I have the adapter for the sawdust chute. That is on my list of things to do. I'm not sure I understand #2. What do you mean about the steps and the strip? Thanks for watching! Joe

    The thing that puzzles me is why you stack the wood after splitting. We just make them to 1 m3 or 1,5 m3 sacks specially made for the purpose, put the sacks on pellets and under roof (but of course not walls around) and season them for a year. You can stack 2-3 sacks high (pellets in between) with a small tractor. You can deliver the wood on the big bags or make the bundles from the big sack. Less manual work. Greetings from Finland!

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Small Flower! Tell your friends in Finland they make a GREAT firewood processor. We stack because it is the best way to store firewood. Yes it is labor intensive but I hire people to stack for me when I don't feel like doing it. Joe

    Hi Joe: What length are you cutting the logs that you are putting through the Japa?

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The logs are usually around 10--13 feet long. Sometimes shorter. My practice is to cut the logs in half before loading. Off the logger's truck they are around 20--22 feet long. The logs around here aren't perfectly straight so shorter logs lay better.

  • @3824liljohn
    @3824liljohn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    when running a full load/day of wood through the japa how often do you need to change out the chain to keep cutting efficiently?

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The chain lasts much longer than a typical session with a chainsaw. It will last between 5-6 cords.

  • @erikhornby8557
    @erikhornby8557 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Don't know if you will see this comment. I noticed that it looked like the chains on the log deck rest right on the metal frame. Even well greased that would wear quickly. You might want to contact the manufacturer and see if there is a wear plate that could be installed. This would increase the life of your equipment drastically.

    • @ohiowoodburner

      Hi Erik. They do set right on the steel. I'm not sure about the physics with this but I think the surface area is such that there isn't much wear on it.

  • @1235train

    We run a Hakki Pike easy 50 S with a 474 live deck. It’s a much bigger machine then yours. It has a 18” .404 Oregon harvester chain & bar. The thing I’ve found with our live deck is you have to be very careful with logs falling off and damaging either you the machine or the hydraulic lines on the floor. Also getting the log onto the processor from the live deck can be challenging, as the log can weigh up to a couple of tones they are difficult to manhandle. That’s also wheee you need to be careful with them falling off. We also end up cutting of nots and limbs that stick out to make sure they run through ok

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like a big machine that handles big logs. I can see how you can get hit by an inbound log rolling but at least for me my logs are not quite as big and somewhat shorter. The Hakki Pilke are great machines!

    • @rodneysweetnam8653
      @rodneysweetnam8653 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi 1235train - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I used to split logs for Michael Large, British Isles importer of the Hakki Pilke range so I'm not unfamiliar with them, even though my model, a Honda powered Eagle, is the smallest and now quite rare model in their range. I see that you are a train buff, plenty of steam interest over here in Ireland. Cheers.
