I've done about 400 packs of these, and had about a 97-98% success rate with cells being good. There's no right or wrong way to get them out as long as you get them out, haha! Love your videos, thanks for all of your instruction.
Instead of banging on them with a scraper and hammer, try cutting through the stickers on both sides with an exacto or similar blade. Then you can hold the battery in a vise and just push it open with no problem. I did a video on this. The ones I have opened have contained mostly LG cells and they are the most difficult to get the cells out due to the amount of adhesive they use. The Sony and Molicells were the easiest to get the cells out.

I layed the packs on the flat of my vise and gave a light whack, to each side, with my Ax. Took less than an hour to harvest the last order I got from you. I got all of the same batteries that you did(only one pack had the red ones). Out of 68 of them I didn't get a single bad cell!

PS, How about a video about a good size battery bank (like 80p x 4s) being charged by the alternator in a automobile. I am building a unit for my Suburban that I plan to keep charged to about 14.5 volts. I want to be able to charge it with a 300 watt solar panel (if needed when camping) and use 110 from my 3000 watt inverter. Thanks!

I purchased a pallet of 10,000 cells for a powerwall I am building. I am considering any cell under 2000 mah as failed.
I have a reject rate of about 5%. Now, that said, the majority of the "lime green" and "red" cells are not worth the effort of dealing with since they often don']t make my 2000 cut off. They are not necessarily bad, but usually, only have 1500-2000 in my testing (so I've just put them off to the side). Even with that, I'm running about 95% keepers.
To bad the shipping to germany is more expensive than the cells themself around 170$ :/
plus import taxes (i bought a few from italy, ended up costing 2.5x more when you add up shipping and taxes... )

I don’t think we will have any luck in Europe. The regulation are forcing manufacturers to take everything back and be responsible for the waste stage. So used ones are almost only private people selling them second hand and thus trying to recover as much as possible. But most people would just get them to a recycling spot to get rid of it, or bring it back to the shop. I have heard from someone that did recycle old ebike batteries and rebuild them with the cells with good enough capacity. But with the new regulation, he has to stop since he doesn’t have the required licenses to recycle batteries... And since most batteries sold new here have te adhere to regulation and testing procedures, I think it will be the cheapest to just order the lithium cells on AliExpress. Or you have to be extremely lucky to find someone that is about to throw out a pc or something that is willing to just give away its battery

To scrape the black glue better. Use the plastic divider that was in between the batteries as a scraper. Since its plastic you can just go hard on it so I cleans better and doesnt leave black on the shrink

Note:: if you are going to disassemble that many batteries in the same fashion, use ear protection. It might sound silly but you're experiencing 100s of repetitions of over 100db less than 2ft from your ears.

Lol he forgot to mention that you can be around 120 dB for 2 minutes without permanent damage. That is 2 minutes of that loud sound SUSTAINED. As in, hitting the hammer on metal EVERY second for 2 minutes continuous. Pretty sure it took him 2-3 minutes every 1 second x 3 impacts. It's not possible to cause permanent hearing loss unless it is sustained or over a a higher dB which could cause sudden hearing loss, but a hammer on metal is not high enough to cause instant loss, but can cause sustained, if, as I said, you keep hammering over and over and over for several minutes without taking a break.
Protecting your hearing isn't dumb. You only get two ears for your life

Never pry against a cell with anything. If you dent a cell never use it. I bent one once just a little on the bottom edge and 5 minutes later it was about to explode.
instead of cutting the glue of, you could use a hairdryer on medium heat when you take the batteries out of their shells, saves you from having to use a prying tool and a glue cleanup, BAM...just my two cents...

Good idea. Also, instead of an xacto knife, I use a wooden popsicle stick to scrape off the hard glue. Usually just flakes right off.

No i think these are welded using ultra sonic welding machine. It is very common practice to to ultra sonic weld mobile/laptop chargers, laptop batteries etc. A very fast, superb finish and low cost way it is

After trying different ways of opening these, I've found the easiest. Get a 2 pack of groove joint pliers. Open them nice and wide to get a good grip. You should be able to crack them open effortlessly.
I am actually in the works of making a video about opening these modules right now :). I went a radically different route from Battery Hookup and you guys. I constructed a jig using wood, vice and a scraper. Also some advice, those scrapers have 2 sizes and you used the smaller size, using the larger ones lets you use less strike points.

Why don't use a heat gun on low heat to separate the glue from the battery I mean that's what I would have done but you know watching how much heat I actually use

I'd be interested in how to add protection to these cells (individually), but in a professional way, that uses a very thin strap and thin insulation, to minimise the increase in diameter. I got burnt recently when I bought some cheap protected cells on eBay - they don't fit my devices.
What are those ? And if its new why crack open them ?
I've found that you can use the plastic separator as a scraper to remove the glue without harming the heat shrink.

Get the Trim and Molding tool set from HarborFreight, use the big tool from the set to wedge the batteries out. The tool is plastic and won't conduct. Also use the same tool to scrape the glue off without tearing the stock shrink tube. I've done 1,200 of them and only had to re-sleeve about 30 maybe 40.

Percy Brown those connectors cost so much, we don’t have the modem, you’d lose in the long run. You could rig up something but I feel it’d be unreliable. Better off with welded or spring contacts.
Jehu awesome video.. hey they throw these away at my job... so I picked up well over 50 of these .. I made a 36v battery for my kids electric ATV .. I'm not sure with work hour amp capacity these are .. I would like to know if they can be used in RC applications..

Literally used these for my power wall. Only used the LG and Samsung's. Dumped the Sony's and the Sanyo. They did not test well

@@andretodopoderoso7 only 10% were Sony or Sanyo and they were testing at about 75% capacity while the LG and Samsung all tested near 100% do I decided to not use the Sanyo and Sony. I'm sure there are some good Sanyo and Sony but after a few bad tests I just stopped using them. Luckily these packs are mostly LG

It seems like the amount of time required to separate each cell would make the cost per cell higher than just the price. If you don't value your time then these might be the cheapest cells. It seems like it would be cheaper to just buy a factory made battery.

I grabbed a box of there as soon as they popped back on. Asked Batteryhookup for 50 packs and they gave me 52. Happy they did because so far I found one 0v pack. Last bunch I had 6 bad and only 10 cells coming out from 1500 to 1800. Now I’m working on the next box! Keep it up Jehu!

Don't use the red Sanyo cells, they are known very old cells that are known to heat up alot and possibly catch fire during charging. The samsung and lg cells are fine but know that the modem manufactures those are the cheapest ones that they make, to prevent the the modems from using cheap chinese cells instead.
When I get my mini windmill back up and running, I plan buying something like this for my 1-2kwh pack.

Hello sir. You should never try to peal down the sripp from the negative lead. They are spot welded and when you taking off, you can create electrolyte leakage. It is best to cut it as short as possible. Best regards !!!
I have seen shrink wrap for them on Ebay. I bought some clear for the 38120's just for extra safety and cause they were soooo cheap.
I found that the paint scraper blade works better removing the globs of glue than an exacto knife in the 8 pack modem batteries I am processing.
I would re-wrap them. 😄
