I use a Fronius Transpocket 180 welder for jobs like this. It'll burn a 1/8" rod at 120 amps on 330 ft of 12-3 extension cord at 110V and weighs only 19 lbs. If I need to cut , I'll use a cordless cutoff wheel. Mobility is key. Great content! Welcome to my world. Maintenance welding is still welding. It may not be glamorous, but it will help pay the bills.

Consider switching to an inverter generator that is 4x as quiet. You (and your clients) will thank me. 7018 is awesome stuff, but flux core mig is the cat's meow for working on thin cheap steel like that. And there are lots of multipurpose portable rigs that do both stick and mig, so you're not giving up the ability to use stick. And if you absolutely positively refuse to use flux core mig, buy some smaller diameter 7018 rod. You can do surprisingly delicate work with 3/32" or even 1/16" rod. You can also try 6011. Way easier to strike the arc over and over on these short piddly welds compared to 7018.
    Everything has its place.

    • @solarguy6043
      @solarguy6043 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Sure, why not?? You can weld with 6011 on AC, DC and any position. Does not need to be kept in a rod heater. Widely available. Inexpensive. Easy to strike the next arc without chipping off the flux, unlike 7018. It spatters more than 7018, but for piddly work on thin metal it's fine.@@totalpkg6912

@@totalpkg6912yes 6011 would be much better on paint and rust and is better at restarting your arc, the 7018 is a great rod but not for these small projects and this is my opinion and I’ve been welding for over 55 years

I originally bought this equipment for home use and hobbies, but talking to the black irons tradesmen I work with. None of them could be bothered doing these side jobs. I hade my Millermatic 251 shop welder running off of my Miller Bobcat 225 gas drive machine. I kept tripping breakers on the bobcat and couldn’t figure it out, called my Airgas dealer and he said “ explain your amperage and setup” I said I was running the mig at 250 amps off of the bobcat set at 225 amps and ………oh nevermind Craig , I got it!😂

He,he..I can relate to "Damn, that's rotten..". I've frequently done repairs on something that should have been done completely new. However, the customer is king and if he asks to just repair it I'll do. The problem with a plasma cutter is the huge start-up current it draws as it starts the arc. When you just do jobs in thin steel go for a slightly smaller cutter... 40 amps will do just fine up to 8 mm plate.

A smaller electrode (3/32) is better for welding that thin tubing, it sucks and wastes time when you have to chase a hole, due to over heat or b/c railing like that tends to have moisture which corrodes the insides making it paper thin. When doing that kind of repair work, I prefer run a wire feeder. Even though I run everytihing MIller, the old lincoln weldpak 155 is perfect for this kind of jobs. You can run mig or flux with no issues, and .023 flux is especially good for thin repairs, and you can get a 15' replacement gun for added reach. I do like the mobile unit approach, keeps everything close and stops morons from stepping on or driving over cables.

Obviously, I wasn't there so I can't really say and I don't know the whole situation, but from my personal experience it's possible that it wasn't the breaker on your generator but rather that your air compressor might not have enough tank capacity for the plasma. I have that same problem a lot and it usually has to do with insufficient air pressure. But again, I don't have all the details, just throwing that out there.

I have a 9,000 watt generator and I tried using my plasma cutter with it once and had the same issue. The plasma only pulls about 30 amps so it’s not overloading the geni and it runs all my welders just fine. I haven’t dug into it yet but I think it’s just got something to do with how a plasma cutter, it’s making the geni think it’s shorting out.

Plasma cutters are the shit. I used to display ours to other navys by cutting half inch steel on the fantail. I loved demonstration days. The Chinese looked like they'd never seen one. Yes, in 2009 the US and China did joint training operations together. Their Navy was a joke.

On the issue of not being able to run the plasma. Maybe a small, portable bandsaw with a small table on it , to run in the vertical position. I have two here in the workshop. Lite and compact, I just put one in the back of the ute and take it out to jobs.

Get a smaller plasma. I've got a 15 year old Hypertherm 380 that runs behind my 6500w generator. It's a problem when the compressor gets low and has to refill but if only one of them is running at the same time, no problems.

I've done this before with a 6500 watt generator. Some welding machines don't like running off of generators that small though. However, I now own a diesel engine drive and it will run any welder or plasma cutter that I plug into it. Very handy. I used it to run a Miller 252 on a job once.
But Taylor, you missed something very important. You're running a 5" cutoff disk on a 4-1/2" angle grinder with no guard. Two big mistakes, especially when you are trying to teach people stuff. Don't let newbies build bad habits, bro. The fact you've run like that for years without losing your fingers doesn't make it right.

Thanks for another awesome video! While I have a Miller Syncrowave 210, & a Miller Millermatic Vintage, & a Lincoln tombstone...... portability (in the back of my SxS) is exactly why I also purchased a ArcCaptain MIG 200. While I actually prefer 7018's for most of what I do.....I think you'd appreciate some Hobart Fabshield 21B for the thinner tubing.

I grew up in VT, i learned to stick weld fenders.
RULE #1!! do NOT allow a "proper arc!" Keep it sputtering in the puddle! When you need to stop- BE QUICK! Move the rod away with a snap, sort of. Takes 1/10th of a second to hole that thin sheet metal. Starting the arc is difficult! Get to a sputtering puddle immediately or you'll have a hole.
    Good luck!

Ideally this is what I'd like to do post welding school, just odd jobs. I'm in the dark though, how do you advertise your services or set prices? How do you know who's already in the market so you can set competitive prices? Well, I'd either like to do odd jobs, OR pipe weld out in the field, but I'm pretty sure you'd have to join a union for that which I don't want to do. I'm also unsure of which method of welding is most appropriate for any application. You welded a handrail in this video with SMAW, I imagine that's best for outdoors welding unless you get wind guards. GTAW for more delicate applications or where appearance is a factor? I'm still in school so I'm still learning, but I'd love to become a master at my craft and not have a boss to answer to (besides the customer). Additionally, don't you have to follow building codes for doing what you're doing or be licensed? Yeah, I've got a lot to learn still.

I'm doing pretty good so far but I don't really feel like I'm getting the experience or knowledge I'd need to go work on a pipeline or something serious like that. This whole time I've been trying to think of things like this that could be easy to dip my toes in and this is just such a good idea.
