I use a Fronius Transpocket 180 welder for jobs like this. It'll burn a 1/8" rod at 120 amps on 330 ft of 12-3 extension cord at 110V and weighs only 19 lbs. If I need to cut , I'll use a cordless cutoff wheel. Mobility is key. Great content! Welcome to my world. Maintenance welding is still welding. It may not be glamorous, but it will help pay the bills.
That is a very good idea. I however, was a welder for 20 years. Got diagnosed with MS. Can not do some of the things I love. Like welding. That's why I watch these types of videos. I wish I was 30 years younger, I would do this side hustle !
Consider switching to an inverter generator that is 4x as quiet. You (and your clients) will thank me. 7018 is awesome stuff, but flux core mig is the cat's meow for working on thin cheap steel like that. And there are lots of multipurpose portable rigs that do both stick and mig, so you're not giving up the ability to use stick. And if you absolutely positively refuse to use flux core mig, buy some smaller diameter 7018 rod. You can do surprisingly delicate work with 3/32" or even 1/16" rod. You can also try 6011. Way easier to strike the arc over and over on these short piddly welds compared to 7018. Everything has its place.
Sure, why not?? You can weld with 6011 on AC, DC and any position. Does not need to be kept in a rod heater. Widely available. Inexpensive. Easy to strike the next arc without chipping off the flux, unlike 7018. It spatters more than 7018, but for piddly work on thin metal it's fine.@@totalpkg6912
@@totalpkg6912yes 6011 would be much better on paint and rust and is better at restarting your arc, the 7018 is a great rod but not for these small projects and this is my opinion and I’ve been welding for over 55 years

What a great idea im and industrial hvac technician for the last 32 years i already have a plasma cutter multiprocess welder generator and many tools im doing this
I am an electrician that just bought a Yes Welder 160 YWM multi process welder (only plan on using flux core and stick), a 5000W generator with a 240V 30A receptacle, plus a few other odds and ends. I originally bought this equipment for home use and hobbies, but talking to the black irons tradesmen I work with. None of them could be bothered doing these side jobs. So with that being said, watching this video and others like this, inspires me to possibly be a mobile welder as a side gig as well. Thank you for sharing these videos.
Looks like you and I are in the same business! 99% of the wrought iron at these apartments is 16ga. Do yourself a favor and go to Harbor Freight and buy a flux core mig welder. They’re cheap and run like hell. They’ll make quick work of that 16ga, much faster than those 7018s. Leave the sticks for the structural and pipe! Thanks for the great content!!

Hi, from another Taylor. Your suggestions and business plan here are spot on...but I'd offer one caveat for anyone planning this. Be sure to check your State's license/contractor laws. Here in AZ, if your job is over $1000 then you can't work on buildings as a "handyman"...and it wouldn't take many hours to exceed $1K. I got a call in response to a card I'd posted, asking about building some gates. He gave me dimensions and asked questions, then asked if I could install them on his building. When I said I couldn't, he said "Good, because I'm an investigator with the Registrar of Contractors and if you'd said yes I'd be visiting you to issue a citation." He was calling all the folks who'd posted cards or flyers. So, look up the regs and be careful folks... And, as always, thanks for the great videos sir.

Good stuff. I'm just getting into welding. I've utilized my sports performance/medicine skills in various settings that others were "scared" to in order to improve people's quality of life. This is an excellent recommendation! I have a John Deere 3320 (mid-frame size compact) tractor that I have used in similar situations. I put a Tractor Supply 3-point hitch carrier on the back with a bottle rack I built and a job box on the rear of my tractor and carry my back-up Lincoln 305G attached to a fabricated skid on the pallet forks of the loader. Works fantastic on crowded job sites and in warehouses.
I have loved your tip for the white paint marker. I use them all the time. Let me try to give you one. I keep 1/16 6013 sticks for thin rusty metal. I've actually been able buttweld 18awg sheets metal at 10amps with this. I think I've also succeeded with 7014 1/16 as well. Keep the tips coming.
I'm also a fan of 6013 for thin railings and such. It doesn't penetrate as much as 6010, which is great on thinner stuff, but it freezes fast enough to fill holes.
My buddy that works at a welding supply store brought me some 5/64 6013 for a similar job i have coming up. Ran it @ 40amps and it welded beautifully. It also welded a lot smoother after i dipped it in water
I've run 6013 at ridiculous low amperages with the polarity flipped and welded some incredibly thin material considering. flipping the polarity moves the heat from the workpiece to the rod from what I understand. I think it was 20 gauge, the welder was cranked down to something like 50 amps.
I would love to do this. The hardest part is finding the clients. I also don’t have a generator yet. I do have a Toyota Tacoma, and an arc captain multiprocess though. Really want to start my welding business soon Also I’d rather use flux core and angle grind and clean the joints first before welding! Get much cleaner welds. I hate stick welding so much lol. I suck at it
Thanks Taylor. I'm trying to get my own rig together for side $$$, and you have shown how simple it can be. Theres a lot of questionable apartments to fix in my area 😂
I think this set up is exactly what I need!! I always wondered how welders move around the equipment and I never thought of using a golf cart!! Great idea and I’m definitely gonna have to try it out
I have thought this many of times for apts ,schools, care homes, etc,My big worry is most of those places are shifty anyways ,don't think for a minute they won't sue you when the rail breaks anywhere but your weld.
Do an invoice and have a signature that says no warranty no liability for repairs. It’s a repair bro you can weld it and the rust will eat around it. Some people thinks it’s a extra to have a receipt and file it but very professional and can save you down the road
That’s an awesome rig. You got set up there with that golf cart. That’s such an amazing idea.!!! You just need a bigger generator more power for that plasma cutter.
I had the same breaker problem on our generator trying to run a Lincoln Tombstone. I increased the breaker fuse up one level and have ran that for better than a year with no problem. May correct your plasm cutter problem .
Great idea! Were you running the plasma on 110 or 220 on the generator? I can't garuntee it'll work, but Maybe try running it on 220 (if your generator has it) since it will be half the amp draw.
I'm trying to get my start in welding. I've gotten a welder and have been doing some practice and watching a ton of videos about it. I'm hoping I can start doing things like this soon.
I bought the predator 9500 inverter generator for hf to run my multiprocess welder and my 50 Amp plasma cutter. Runs awesome until the higher end on my plasma as well. But it will cut at 40 to 45 amps for about 4 to 5 min before the generator starts tripping breakers. The inverter type generators are the way to go though.
I couldn't find a comment that mentioned that it looks like your tubing had no vent to allow hot gases to escape which caused your weld to blow out. It does look like a great gig. thanks for sharing.
Excellent advice,I do have a similar rig, with a Duramax e10000 generator, hypertherm 30 amp plasma with built in compressor and Eastwood tig 200 . Sometimes I get some repairs inside the house, so I get them with tig. Little argon bottle.
I did something similar years ago for fast food restaurants. I used a mig though. 6500 watt generator. Didnt have a plasma cutter. Used a porta band for almost everything.
Great idea. I would pull the golf cart out of a inclosed trailer and hook up a smaller trailer that is set up with what you need. I did alot of them at apartments. Wish I had that back then. Also I did basement doors at the apartments that didn't latch.the best welding I found was mig welding. You can really dile it down. Good money.
I was working on my welder in my JD 6 wheeler. Esab 180i, and propane generator when saw this channel. Have regular rig with miller 400A big blue Kubota.
Fantastic vid! Love that your showing people how to get out there and do their own thing. I am stunned that your generator couldn't run that plasma cutter. I have one of the Arccaptian mig boxes and a yes welder plasma cutter. I'm going to have to run some tests to see what is optimal for a mobile rig like this.
thank you for this video i plan to start welding school before summer starts and im just tryna get a general idea of what to do after i get on a job site for a few years and then eventually branch off and create my own welding company i will be looking into to getting a golf cart…this is my first time seeing one turned into a rig and i love the idea
Love your videos. I'm just starting my own business and I will definitely chase some of these jobs. I got a little Titanium Mig 170 for that thin tube. Keep inspiring us
Hi, question: At 9:00 why use the Plasma Cutter for this cut, if you have the Saw Which would do the Job Better?, more Clean and less power consumption, whats the Reason ?
I would definitely get an oxyacetyen setup. Sometimes, a small torch tip and some e70s2 rod would make that thin rusty material much easier to deal with.
My little Miller BlueStar can run a plasma cutter and weld about anything. 180 amps. The gen side is 6K continuous. A Porta Band might be a good alternative to the plasma? The stands for the Porta Band can be a great option too!
You know that a cheap hand held grinder is a must . You can use it for a wire wheel as well as cutting, sanding and grinding to finish off and have a great look. I really like the idea of ding portable welding. I really like doing small jobs and thin stuff is where I really d great at !
I did a little job like this, maybe a little more design and welding, for my mom. I used wire feed. I have almost no experience, but it seemed to work just fine.
I’m in school for welding going for my associates degree just looking into different ideas and this was really cool I’m 26 my first year of school this video was nice bro
FWIW, I bought a Harbor Freight 5" portable band saw a couple of years ago to cut oilfield 2 3/8" pipe for a retaining wall. Probably have 100 cuts of that plus misc angle iron, rod and plate cuts, still on the original blade. I do give each cut a squirt of WD40 or equiv for lube. Might not be as handy as plasma for complex cuts but definitely cleaner than a 4" wheel and surprisingly controllable.
Thank you for sharing this video. I been wanting to learn how to weld for 10+ years or so, This has sparked my interest yet again, I will look to make it a new years resolution this coming year and quit wasting time. Watching you weld has inspired me to hurry up and get started, thank you 🙏🏽
I have a little lincoln 180 that I run flux core with on light metal like that. I have a 30 foot 220 cord that I made to get to spots like that. It makes it easier and quicker to run flux core on that thin hand railing. But you can use a cheaper welder also.
This is an awesome idea!!! And I never thought I would want a lowly golf cart!!! LOL!!! I did wonder why you had a plasma cutter when an angle grinder will do the job. nly when you have curves to cut will the plasma shine!!!
I think its awesome you are sharing a business, basically anyone can take on that is handy. Plus this business is keeping kid in these apartment complexes safe. Larry
This is where a Milwaukee metal skill saw is far superior to even a plasma. No grinding after to clean plasma slag and way faster than cut off wheel! Great video.
Figure it runs around $300 it doesn’t take long to pay for itself. I was a millwright for 11 years and my go to cutting tool was the skill saw. From 11ga to 1” it will cut them all.
Get a smaller plasma. I've got a 15 year old Hypertherm 380 that runs behind my 6500w generator. It's a problem when the compressor gets low and has to refill but if only one of them is running at the same time, no problems.
Thank you for giving me a new idea because I am going to get my GED and then go to school to learn welding and I'm thinking of ways I can start up my own company and you I've been thinking of what equipment I would need to be able to get to the job site and get my equipment to and back home from the job site via on a either a peddle bike or an e-bike
On that tubing a gusset from new peace to the edge of railing we’re it 90s wold seem to give u more support. Also when messing with that thin stuff use 1/32 2011
dont need a plasma cutter. portable power tools work great. i like the setup. ive seen something like this for tree service deep in the woods. worked good!
For the same money you could’ve gotten the baby bottle torch set. 350 a harbor freight. The torch that comes with the kit can cut up to 3/4 inch think steel. With bigger bottles and regulators but it does just fine out of the box. But I absolutely can get behind this trend. Never thought about it like this before.
I run my 50 amp plasma with a 8700 Watt Harbor Freight generator if I am working away , I also use a 110v flux core welder for jobs like what you were doing.
Fronius battery powered welder and a Milwaukee Band Saw/Cutoff Wheel, small portable oxy/acetyline cutoff torch. Anker SOLIX F3800 240v rechargeable generator. Less weight to haul things around. But the golf cart's a great idea.
I'll second that motion on being underrated as well, my guy ! I did a Lil welding in high school back in the day . And now I wish I had taken a career I. The field of welding. I a blue collar myself but , I see way more beneficial had I went into welding. I'm trying to teach this ol' dog a new trick and maybe help myself be a Lil more secure when I jump ship into a business owner / operator of plumbing .
I actually done wat u said we're I live there is tons of apartment complexes awesome Idea the only difference I mig weld any more good ideas for small repair welders
Thanks for the video! I subscribe to the channel 👍🏿💯💥😎 I'm gonna give this idea a shot! If you want to run that plasma cutter your gonna need that Honda EU 3000 generator
On the issue of not being able to run the plasma. Maybe a small, portable bandsaw with a small table on it , to run in the vertical position. I have two here in the workshop. Lite and compact, I just put one in the back of the ute and take it out to jobs.
I think it's a great idea. A teen kid right out of trade school could make some good money too. I dont know where to buy a cheap golf cart but I'm sure you could find one...and a small tilting trailer would be good. You should also have a 4000 watt generator if you're going to use a plasma cutter
Good Vid! Need however to run the Plasma cutter on a 30Amp/120V breaker - (not a 15/20A, if your Gen has that capability) or use adapter plug to get the 220 to make it work properly but anything over 15A should break the Gen CB as it does. As you discussed, no, you absolutely do NOT need the small Oxy setups, just turn your Plasma cutter down or use the adapter to a 220V and it'll be perfect for those jobs. **The Golf Cart rig is an EXCELLENT idea!
As someone who used to run a generator as a power source (before my setup got liberated from my possession), need a generator with a 50 amp 220 plug. I was running a 10kw generator
I have 2.5 years of welding experience as a young guy and I want to do this side hustle on my sundays off. What llc and insurance should i get? At my first job, they did these repairs with just a little hobart flux core welder, an extension chord to plug into their sockets, a cut off wheel to fab parts and a can of paint. I figure thats all i need! I have the skills, i just dont know the legal stuff...
I would think self-shielding flux core wire would be the better option for those railings, and you can run it with a small 125 mig welder, which would fit that rig pretty well.
Diablo metal cutting saw blade on a skill saw does an awesome job on 1/4" plate. Really.

I stumbled on your channel and I'm glad I did. Thanks for this great idea. I will be jumping on this where I'm at.
What an awesome setup. This makes so much sense.
Thank you for sharing it with us. Blessings, Carlos ✝️🙏❤️😊🇺🇸
You are so welcome thank you Carlos.
Not many old school left like you I salute you sir
I love 7018 but that tubing is a job for 0.020" MIG.
I wish this guy had a new video every hour, I’ve learnt a hell of a lot and also been motivated heaps from this guy
thanks for letting me know man I appreciate it
I couldn't find a comment that mentioned that it looks like your tubing had no vent to allow hot gases to escape which caused your weld to blow out. It does look like a great gig. thanks for sharing.
Loved the video and the attitude. Definitely subscribing. Been welding for 15 years but I always love to learn more tips and tricks. Thanks boss.
I’ve used 6010/6011 in a pinch to gouge cut 1/4” plate.
It isn’t visually appealing but it works!
Just have to grind it when you’re done.
Excellent advice,I do have a similar rig, with a Duramax e10000 generator, hypertherm 30 amp plasma with built in compressor and Eastwood tig 200 . Sometimes I get some repairs inside the house, so I get them with tig. Little argon bottle.
Just getting started on stick in my welding course and I can see myself now cruising the slums welding up some fences!
Good money.
Thank you for that. It was eye opening. The video has really broadened my horizons. 👍🏿
Love and Respect from Nairobi, Kenya.🤘🏿 🇰🇪
I was working on my welder in my JD 6 wheeler. Esab 180i, and propane generator when saw this channel. Have regular rig with miller 400A big blue Kubota.
Nice! I’ve never welded with a big blue
If you run into some bad blow out welding, use silver bronze filler rod with a sharpened carbon arc rod on straight polarity.
Thankful I stumbled across your channel. Learned a lot in the short time I’ve been watching your videos!
Glad to hear it!
Thank you for an awesome idea, Since i am about to retire, I was thinking of something to keep busy ! this might be just the ticket! Thank you !
10:19 Have that exact same Sting (but for an Amico Arc-200) with the exact problem with the handle coming loose.
Making money on your terms, beautiful. That's one of the many things that makes this country so great!
thank you for this video i plan to start welding school before summer starts and im just tryna get a general idea of what to do after i get on a job site for a few years and then eventually branch off and create my own welding company i will be looking into to getting a golf cart…this is my first time seeing one turned into a rig and i love the idea
Go for it!
Sometimes, a small torch tip and some e70s2 rod would make that thin rusty material much easier to deal with.
totally
stock some 1/16 7018 and some 3/32 6010 on the golf rig. Brilliant idea BTW. Got to put on a stubby saver.
Good deal. Let me know if you have any questions and let me know how it’s going.
Hand held bandsaw may be a better choice
I've got an M12 milwaukee port-a-band, it's bad ass. I've used the M18 ones too, they're overkill for most of what I do.
Not for angles etc
Yeah Taylor Welding best welding channel on the youtubes
Thank you for sharing this video.
I been wanting to learn how to weld for 10+ years or so, This has sparked my interest yet again, I will look to make it a new years resolution this coming year and quit wasting time.
Watching you weld has inspired me to hurry up and get started, thank you 🙏🏽
Go for it!
I have a little lincoln 180 that I run flux core with on light metal like that. I have a 30 foot 220 cord that I made to get to spots like that. It makes it easier and quicker to run flux core on that thin hand railing. But you can use a cheaper welder also.
I also have a lotus plasma that is little and really light and perfect for mobil stuff like that. I think it was about $400 and runs on 30 amp.
Thank you for the tips
This is an awesome idea!!! And I never thought I would want a lowly golf cart!!! LOL!!! I did wonder why you had a plasma cutter when an angle grinder will do the job. nly when you have curves to cut will the plasma shine!!!
Its the combo of the air compressor and plasma cutter together! I had this issue too. Get a cheap $200 honda generator to run the compressor
You just inspired me chief I truly appreciate that , I’ll send you a video once I start doing this as well .
Nice lil flux core machine are great for railings & fencing...great vid!
The compressor kicking In while plasma cutter is on is probably tripping the breaker. They have a huge startup draw.
Great point!
Thanks for the ideas I’m currently working for a company that does this and I really want that bag for myself
This is super huge! Man you and dad are kicking butt!
you have a great gig going partner. I definitely want to do what you did. Great gig buddy, great gig. mucho kuddos to you and your Dad.
On that tubing a gusset from new peace to the edge of railing we’re it 90s wold seem to give u more support. Also when messing with that thin stuff use 1/32
2011
dont need a plasma cutter. portable power tools work great. i like the setup. ive seen something like this for tree service deep in the woods. worked good!
He said something about the pain to constantly get the little bottles refilled….
When in trouble, Texas Tig! Sometimes a little 6013 in DC straight polarity can bail you out on thin stuff.
I subscribe to the channel 👍🏿💯💥😎
I'm gonna give this idea a shot!
If you want to run that plasma cutter your gonna need that Honda EU 3000 generator
😂 that thing is awesome and really in a back yard or something it’s perfect great idea
Wonderful. May I suggest a 120v wire feeder with 211 wire would be a much better unit for this work.
You can try using compressed nitrogen with plasma cutter. This way you will not have to have the added load of the compressor on your generator.
I liked your video and the way you approach it, very relaxed. I will probably check out your other videos when I have time.
I would think self-shielding flux core wire would be the better option for those railings, and you can run it with a small 125 mig welder, which would fit that rig pretty well.
