  • This week we are doing something different. I will be taking you through a list of items that I personally think are not that great. Yes, I will be de-influencing you from buying certain decor items that are trending but do not have any lasting power nor do they have any timeless capabilities to withstand a style in your home.

    In a moment of "aren't I cool and hip" weakness, I ordered a high-contrast, geometric-patterned rug that, thankfully, had pulled threads all over it. That meant I could return it without a charge. It was a nightmare. The beast was only on our floor for about 1/2 an hour, and I felt as though I was living in a fun house at the circus, such was my discombobulation! Oh, and it was unbacked, so it was as if I were walking on roller skates. It could have been a really expensive 10' by 14' mistake! Lesson learned. Subtle rugs for us from now on!

      What was that super wild design? I have a round rug (1.5m/4.9 feet) that looks like an abstract painting, which I put under my big grey armchair. It's like sitting on a painting. I love it. Maybe a big colorful rug is daring but as a contrast piece for neutral colored furniture it can absolutely work.

    In a small shower, the problem with a shelf is that it takes up more real estate as the wall needs to be brought forward A niche can be placed between the studs so it is recessed in the wall.

    • @fionam7768
      @fionam7768 หลายเดือนก่อน

      True, but even more of a reason to keep it (as the word literally translates) on the smaller side. And, if I might suggest, on a surface where the recess won't catch as much water as elsewhere. That will leave the visual line uninterrupted for the sense of space one often wants but give you practical space for what's needed and not for growing mould/dead soap gunk/ container collection. A small glass shelf across a corner of the shower not fixed to the screen and at a height clear of the water can also work well, especially if you leave a small gap where the walls meet, so any water that manages to hit the shelf doesn't pool against the wall.

      @@mrphoenixgrey 1. It is not incorrect to pronounce foreign-originating words that have become part of English in the English pronunciation, and 2. Foyer entered the English language way back when French still had a rhotic R (hard R sound), and it was pronounced as "foy-er" in French and English. Then over time the French accent changed to a non-rhotic R and their pronunciation of foyer changed to "foy-ay" while English pronunciation remained the same. So "foy-er" is correct English pronunciation (and correct original French pronunciation); "foy-ay" is modern French pronunciation - which is still correct if you want to say it that way in English, but "foy-er" is also correct. English is flexible that way.

    My friends owned a 100-year-old house, and they fell in love with the lime-washed look, even had a CD from Home Depot showing how to do it. I watched it and had an insight. I showed them how the walls on the CD were all in brand-new houses. I thought that they added interest to a new house, but in an old house, people will see it and think the walls are moldy or deteriorating. They didn't tell me I was brilliant, but they dropped the idea.

    Great point; a shelf or ledge is tons better, Daddy did not mention it but a niche is bad enough empty, IRL, those become a catch all of junk. So why build a stage or basically a frame for your junk? He didn't mention it, but stainless steel bins or caddies, help to solve the problem, even for a shelf. They have to be perforated, but the less you can see through the better. They almost have to be the same color as the walls. OR at least the same as you metal hardware. I have brushed stainless hardware so went to a restaurant junk yard and got the stainless bins they use for the silverware. The are a little too industrial, but much better, for the time being.

This orange lamp is the Nesso Lamp from the 1960's designed by Giancarlo Mattioli. This is even sold at MoMA. This is as classic as it can get. @@lsamoa Sorry no, I worded that wrong, the fabric I picked looks like it could have been used for one of his jackets, I think it was one of the early Rick Mercer Reports where Coach was talking about his jackets and he said, I go to the upholstry section buy a couple yards of what I like and take it to my tailor.

    Meh the appeal of the mushroom is the actual mushroom. Instead of replicating the shape, which can be a bit phallic IMO, just add smaller accessories. I like adding cute mushrooms ceramic pieces inside plants or lean into mushrooms and gnomes for like Christmas, which is already a little kitschy.

    I have a tub shower so I had to make vertical niches so the tub bather could reach soap shampoo conditioner and the shower person would not have to bend to get their soaps shampoo. My two children have more bathroom condiments than you can imagine. And that includes my son! So they have used up the niche. If I did Schluter I would have needed at least 5 of those tiny corner shelves. No thanks. I did two vertical niches three feet tall two feet wide. Travertine marble back in a subway black grout shower tub combo polished chrome fixtures. The niches are outlined in black ceramic edge tile. They look beautiful. But I can’t see them bc they are behind a shower curtain! A glass door is dangerous when you have a tub especially if you bath children in it. My two are grown but I kept the shower curtain look when I renovated. I like your ideas and that you consider safety in your recommendations. 👍🏻

    My daughter is 10, awesomely weird, and wants mushrooms in her bedroom. I think that’s the type of person and room he’s talking about. For a child in a room that’s hidden.
